Folders, files, and filenames are the basic components of file storage on a computer. A file contains data or program instructions that has been given a name for storage purposes. A folder stores files and allows them to be organized and retrieved. Filename extensions, which consist of a period followed by three letters, provide information about the file type and program that can open it. Common extensions include .doc for Microsoft Word files, .jpg for photos, and .xls for Excel spreadsheets.

Folders, Files and Filenames

A computer file is data that has been given a name

for storage. A computer file can also be a list of
program instructions. A folder or directory stores
files for retrieval.

Filename extensions are the dot and three letters at the end of
the file.
These filename extensions identify both the file type --graphic, word
processing document, etc. and the software application that created or
can open the file.
The filename extension is a period followed by three letters. i.e. this
page is named "files.htm"
