3 Work and Energy

This document provides an overview of physics concepts including work, energy, and power. It defines work as the process of moving an object where work is equal to force times displacement parallel to the force. Energy is associated with work and can be in kinetic, gravitational potential, or elastic potential forms. Power is defined as the work done over a time interval and is measured in watts.

Work
• In physics, Work represent a type of energy.
• Work can be defined as process to move the
object position.

W  F .s F parallel s

• The SI unit of Work (and energy) is Joule

1 J =1 N.m
Figure 1: Work done by a constant force. (a) A person pushes a lawn mower with a constant force.
The component of the force parallel to the displacement is the work done, as shown in the equation in the figure.
(b) A person holds a briefcase. No work is done because the displacement is zero.
(c) The person in (b) walks horizontally while holding the briefcase. No work is done because cos θ is zero.

Energy
• Energy is closely associated with work. When work is done by
one system on another, energy is transferred between the
two systems.

• For example, when you do smash on playing badminton,

chemical energy of your body is transferred to racket and
appears as kinetic energy motion of shuttlecock.

Energy
• Kinetic energy
• Gravitational Potential energy
• Elastic Potential energy
Power
• We first define average power as the work
done during a time interval.

• Power is measure in J/s, which has been given

SI name Watt (1W=1J/s)
another unit 1hp=746W (horsepower)
