ACTIVITY TITLE: PERFORMANCE CHECK 2 – MAP ANALYSIS AND SUMMARY OF

RESPONSES

Instructions:
For your 2nd task for the Hazard Assessment, you will gather information about you chosen community through
the use of Hazard Hunter, which is commonly used to assess various hazards in different communities prone to
disaster. Moreover, you will summarize the transcription of your interview following the guide questions.
• Once the map analysis and summary of responses are done upload this file on MS Teams to post
entitled “Map Analysis and Summary of Responses”.
• Please refer to the posts on MS Teams for the deadlines.

I. Map Analysis Guidelines:

Please read and follow these guidelines so that you could conduct the interview efficiently and effectively:
• Use the HazardHunterPH (https://hazardhunter.georisk.gov.ph/) to look for the geological and
hydrometeorological hazards and other details about the risk of your chosen community.
• Take screenshots of the hazard maps you obtained from these websites and answer the guide questions
to interpret your hazard maps.
• Each member should carefully review and analyze each map.
SCREENSHOTS OF HAZARD MAPS:
In the analysis of your hazard map, answer the following guide questions:
Guide Questions:
• What are the details provided by the hazard maps regarding the risk of your chosen place to geological
and hydrometeorological hazards? (What is the risk value based from the maps/legends of the maps?
What is the susceptibility of your chosen place to different hazards?)
• Based from my interpretation of the hazard maps, how high/low is my chosen place’s risk to geological
and hydrometeorological hazards?
• Is it near to a fault line?
• Based on the results of your interpretation of the hazard maps, what will you do to prepare for various
hazards?
• How can you help spread the right information about hazard preparedness?
ANALYSIS:
Among the geological hazards in the Bacolor area include liquefaction, earthquakes,
and volcanoes while the meteorological hazards include tornadoes, flooding, and heat
waves. According to the hazard map, Bacolor has a low to moderate susceptibility to
flooding which means it has a possibility of experiencing a flood height of 0.5 to 1.0 meters
for 1-3 days. The wind speed also averages around 117.1 - 220 kilometers per hour in a 20-
year return period as well as in a 500-year return period. As the area’s temperature is higher
than the provincial average, (Bacolor’s average high temperature being 96°F as opposed to
Pampanga’s 83°F) it is also quite prone to heat waves. Bacolor also has a high susceptibility
to geological hazards such as earthquakes, liquefaction, and volcanoes. In the Mercalli
scale, Bacolor is prone to intensity VIII earthquakes. According to our interpretation of the
map, Bacolor is at a high risk of experiencing geological hazards (possibly due to its terrain)
but is relatively safe from meteorological hazards, at least compared to the rest of
Pampanga due to having only a moderate susceptibility to flooding. Bacolor also happens
to be relatively near a minor fault line making it prone to earthquakes and other geological
hazards.

Disaster/Hazard preparedness reduces the risks and impacts of disasters to the

people of the community of Bacolor, Pampanga, as well as in various places in the
Philippines. There are varied ways to prepare for hazards such as being on high alert
mentally and physically as it could lessen the panic of citizens, and it could help people
react quickly. Apart from this, learning about the history of said community will help
people raise awareness of the natural and man-made threats that surround them. It will also
help locate available resources that are helpful in planning for various hazards. Make sure
to communicate with the local government near your area to be well-informed and to be
able to locate evacuation routes and sites along with alternative routes in case of emergency.
It is also important to stock essential items as it is vital to people in the short-term.

As Angelites, we can also help spread the correct information about hazard
preparedness by sharing safety tips with our classmates and loved ones. We can also use
social media to share educational posts. It should also come from reliable sources such as
the World Health Organization (WHO), official websites, etc. in order to ensure that the
information is correct and authentic. We must also not forget to double-check our sources
to see if it is factual and accurate.
II. SUMMARY OF RESPONSES
Right after doing the interview and the transcription, summarize the responses of your interviewees following
each guide question.

• What disasters have the community been exposed to in the past?

• How can the damages/effects to the community of these disasters be described?
• Does the community have a functioning public warning system? How is the community informed about
the upcoming disaster?
• How does the community generally respond to the disaster?

Interview Proper
A qualitative design was employed in this study, combining open-ended and closed-ended questions,
with the aim of comprehensively investigating the natural catastrophes and hazards experienced by the
residents of the Municipality of Bacolor, Pampanga. The questions were carefully designed to establish
a direct correlation with the participants' experiences and perceptions of various environmental
challenges. Furthermore, two members of this study collaborated to conduct the question-and-answer
session both in person and virtually. There were a total of three (3) interviewees, all of whom were from
the municipality of Bacolor. The interviews concluded on August 12, 2023. Notably, the interviewers
adhered to ethical norms and regulations, displaying professionalism throughout the process. The
interviewees willingly consented to audio and visual documentation for an educational documentary,
ensuring that these materials would serve solely educational purposes. Additionally, the sample is
entirely voluntary, with informed consent requested at the beginning of the survey form.

Throughout the interview process, participants were engaged with a series of well-structured
questions targeted to their particular encounters. These inquiries were strategically aligned with the
geographical and historical backdrop of Bacolor, allowing for the exploration of various natural disasters
that have impacted the region over time. From floods to volcanic eruptions, each question was designed
to resonate with the residents' memories and knowledge of such events. The success of this qualitative
question-and-answer approach lies in its ability to foster insightful conversations and elicit
interconnected responses. By ensuring the alignment of the questions with the participants' lived
experiences and the specific geographical nuances of Bacolor, the research aimed to offer a
comprehensive overview of the community's vulnerability to diverse natural catastrophes. The collected
data is expected to offer insights into the interconnectedness of the interview questions and the range of
hazards encountered, highlighting patterns, trends, and potential correlations.
Ultimately, the qualitative questions-and-answers methodological interview has proven to be a
beneficial instrument for discovering the range of natural disasters and dangers encountered by the residents
of Bacolor, Pampanga. The questions, thoughtfully designed to relate to the local context, prompted
participants to share their stories and insights regarding the various challenges they have faced. This approach
allowed for the identification of a strong correlation between the questions posed and the encountered
hazards, enabling a holistic understanding of the community's resilience strategies. The primary objective
was to gather rich and contextual data that would provide insights into the specific types of disasters that
have impacted the municipality and the community's resilience strategies. By intertwining the interview
questions with the actual experiences of the participants, this research aims to contribute to the broader
discourse on disaster preparedness and mitigation strategies within the unique context of Bacolor.
