CHAPTER – 1

INTRODUCTION

Meaning

An internship is a profession learning that offers meaningful practical work related to

a student’s field of study career interest. An internship gives a student the opportunity for
career exploration and development, and to learn new skills. It offers the employer the
opportunity to bring new ideas and energy into workplace, develop talent and potentially
build a pipeline for future fulltime employees.

 Responsibilities of the intern.

 Defined educational goals and deliverables to be achieved by the student during
the internship.
 Supervisory Requirements or desired skills.
 Defined knowledge and skills to be developed by the student during the
internship.
 Structure for student (supervised by a graduate student or staff member).
 Progress monitoring and feedback process to ensure the internship is proceeding
as planned.

Description

 Clearly outline all internship tasks, duties, responsibilities, and potential

projects.
 Describe the training and mentor ship that will be offered and what
skills/experience will be gained.
 Describe how the skills/experience will be valuable across your industry and
what career it will prepare the internship.
 Describe the professional background of the supervisor/mentor and what they
have to offers.
 List the types of staff member/client/people the intern will come into contact
with and the potential for building relationships/networking.

~1~
 Describe the specific skills/qualifications/abilities you are seeding. Keep in
mind qualification should be in the realm of what an undergraduate level
student would gain from their classes. Interns typically would not have much
prior professional experience.
 Limit the hours to 10-20 during the academic year and of.

Choice of organization

Internship has chosen Solamalai Enterprises. There are so many reasons for choosing
this company. The good atmosphere of the company impresses me and this company is near
my hometown. There are so many employers are present they worded in sincerely. The
owner treats his employees as a good manner. I would like to use all my gained knowledge
throughout the years in practical work, in the industry under the guidance of manager of the
company. The main reason of choosing this company is need to utilize and explore my
knowledge what I would have learn before and this company is the right platform to exhibit
my skill that’s why I selected this company.

Expected outcome

Job experience job listings often describe requirements such as education and
minimum job experience. If you are entering the workforce for the first time after college or
a vocational training program, you likely do not yet have the required experience. An
internship is a perfect way to fill that gap. You can valuable exposure to how a business in
your chosen field runs, take part in meetings and perform assigned tasks in a real-world
setting. Internship helps student master professional soft skills such as communication,
punctuality and time management. These are skills that are key for their success at job and
college and highly sought after by companies. Many employers complain that there few
candidates with excellent soft skills.

An internship can help a student decide if a particular career is a good match for their
personality, lifestyle, passion and goals. This way a student can avoid spending time and
money on training for a career that does not really suit their abilities or needs. Having
successfully completed an internship makes a job candidate more attractive to employers.
Many companies prefer to hire students who have completed internship programs. This is
because many interns have better work habits, possess excellent soft skills since they have
received formal job training and professional guidance. An internship can help a student’s

Technology:
solamalai enterprises are not fully exposed to the latest technology. Moreover, they
lack requisite resources to update or modernise their plant and machinery Due to obsolete
methods of production, they are confronted with the problems of less production in inferior
quality and that too at higher cost. They are in no position to compete with their better
equipped rivals operating modem large scale units.

Skilled Manpower:
A small scale unit located in a remote backward area may not have problem with
respect to unskilled workers, but skilled workers are not available there. The reason is Firstly,
skilled workers may be reluctant to work in these areas and secondly, the enterprise may not
afford to pay the wages and other facilities demanded by these workers.

Besides non-availability entrepreneurs are confronted with various other problems like
absenteeism, high labour turnover indiscipline, strike etc. These labour related problems
result in lower productivity, deterioration of quality, increase in wastages, and rise in other
overhead costs and finally adverse impact on the profitability of these small scale units.

1. Employment Generation:
Small-scale Industries are mostly labour-intensive. They provide employment
opportunities to a large number of people, especially in rural areas where job opportunities
may be limited. This not only helps in reducing unemployment and poverty rates but also
leads to the growth of the nation.

2. Income Generation:
Small-scale Industries contribute to income generation both at the individual and
national levels. The Small-scale Industries provide opportunities in the form of both self-
employment and entrepreneurship; thereby, helping individuals earn and improve their
standard of living. Additionally, these industries contribute to the country’s GDP increasing
the national income.

~5~
3. Innovation and Diversification:
Small businesses generally engage in specialised goods and services, which
promotes creativity and variety. They help the market expand and become more
competitive by introducing new ideas and technology. These industries act as space for new
and innovative ideas and also provide assistance to larger industries.

4. Export Promotion:
Small businesses play an important role in promoting exports. They produce a wide
range of products and services that may be imported into other countries. This helps in
generating foreign cash, growing business relationships, and improving the country’s
competitiveness abroad.

5. Support to Large Industries:

Small businesses act as supporting units for larger industries by supplying them
with intermediate goods and services. They improve the efficiency and productivity of big
industries and promote the growth of such industries.

6. Rural Development:
Small-scale Industries have a big impact on rural development since they are easy
to establish in rural areas. Besides providing people with employment opportunities, Small-
scale Industries also help improve the standard of living of people in rural regions and
boost their overall income.

7. Balanced Regional Development:

Small-scale Industries have the potential to spread economic development beyond
urban areas. They help in reducing regional differences by creating opportunities in rural
and remote areas; thereby, promoting balanced economic development.

8. Maintenance of Traditional Skills and Crafts:

Small industries often focus on preserving traditional skills and crafts that are
unique to a particular region or community. These industries support the development and
promotion of cultural heritage and traditions.

Structure of organisation
I learn about the structure of the organization. An organizational structure is a system that
outlines how to certain activities are directed in order to achieve the goals of an organization.
These activities can include rules, roles, and responsibilities. The organizational structure also
determines how information flows between levels within the company.

The Solamalai enterprises follow the line organization structure. It is the oldest form
of organization. In a line organization there is hierarchical arrangement of authority. Manager
have direct authority and control over their subordinates. Authority flows downward from top
to bottom. There is no separate departments for accounting, labour etc. each department is
self contained. Departmental heads are the authority in their respective departments. For
example the production manager has to arrange for the recruitment, selection and training.
Line organization structure is one of the simplest form of organization structure. Its authority
flow from top to bottom. Unlike other structures, specialized and supportive services do not
take place in these organization. The main advantage of this organization structure can be
identified as effective communication that brings stability to the organization.

Machinery maintainence

I have learn about machinery maintenance. The Solamalai enterprises has a

comprehensive maintenance plan for machinery in a vessels company would include a initial
assessment of the machinery, regular preventative maintenance, monitoring and analysis of
machinery performance and response plan in the event of a breakdown during the initial
assessment, professional technical should inspect all machines and equipment for any signs
of wear and tear, damage, or malfunction. It’s important to identify any potential problems
before they turn into costly repairs or delays in production. Throughout regular preventative
maintenance the technicians should regularly check and service machinery such as motor
compressors, values and other components to make sure they are performing to their best
capabilities.
It's also important to regularly monitor and analysis machinery performance to look
for any signs of added strain or fatigue. This can help identify potential issues before they
become seriously problem. Having a response plan in place to address machine breakdowns
is also essential. This should include having spare parts on hand, a qualified technical to
inspect and repair/ replace the malfunctioning parts, and a reliable system in place for logging
and tracking issues. Service and lubricate machines as necessary regular maintenance should
include lubricating moving competent to ensure efficiency and prevent unnecessary wear and
tear.
Repair and replace damaged parts when parts of machinery become disfunctional
they should be replaced as soon as possible to prevent additional damage. clean machinery
regurly regular cleaning of machinery will help to prevent damage from dirt and other issue.
greasing and lubricating are usually the first steps of a maintenance routine. Keeping moving
parts lubricated is a key way to keep machinery running smoothly and prevent wear and tear.

Clarity of steel

Types of stainless Steel

1. Austenitic Stainless Steel

Austenitic stainless steel is the most common type used in kitchen utensils. It’s known for
its exceptional corrosion resistance and non-magnetic properties. This type of stainless steel is
often used in cutlery, cookware, and kitchen sinks due to its durability and ease of maintenance.

2. Ferritic Stainless Steel

Ferritic stainless steel is less common in kitchen utensils but still offers good
corrosion resistance. It is magnetic and known for its strength and resistance to stress
corrosion cracking. You may find ferritic stainless steel in some specialized kitchen tools.

3. Martensitic Stainless Steel

Martensitic stainless steel is the strongest and hardest type of stainless steel. While it’s
not as corrosion-resistant as austenitic or ferritic stainless steel, it excels in applications that
require sharpness and durability, such as chef’s knives.

~ 12 ~
Day 6

Date : 07.06.2023

Cleaning and Maintenance of Steel

1. Wash stainless steel utensils promptly after use to prevent food residues from staining or
corroding the surface.

2. Use mild dish soap, warm water, and a soft cloth or sponge for cleaning.

3. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads that could scratch the stainless steel surface.

4. Towel dry your utensils to prevent water spots and streaks.

Avoiding Common Pitfalls

1. Avoid prolonged contact with salt:

While stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion, prolonged exposure to salt can cause
pitting.

2. Don’t use steel wool or harsh scouring pads: These can scratch the surface and diminish its
shine.

3. Separate stainless steel from other metals in the dishwasher: To prevent galvanic
corrosion, don’t mix stainless steel utensils with those made from other metals in the
dishwasher.

In the next section, we’ll discuss the environmental benefits of stainless steel and its
contribution to sustainability.

Spinning machinery process

Metal spinning, also known as spin forming or spinning or metal turning

most commonly, is a metalworking process by which a disc or tube of metal is rotated at high
speed and formed into a axially symmetric part. Spinning can be performed by hand or by a

CNc lathe.

~ 16 ~
Day 10

Date : 12.06.2023

Welding machine process

Welding is a fabrication process whereby two or more parts are fused

together by means of heat, pressure of both forming a join as the parts cool. Welding is
usually used on metals and thermoplastics but can also be used on wood. The completed
welded joint may be referred to as a weld.

Some materials require the use of specific processes and techniques. A

number are considered un weld able a term not usually found in dictionaries but useful and
descriptive in engineering.

The parts that are joined are known as a parent material. The material
added to help form the join is called filler or consumable. The form of these materials may
see them referred to a parent plate or pipe, filler wire, consumable electro etc.

Consumables are usually chosen to be similar in composition to the parent

material, thus forming a homogenous weld, but there are occasions, such as when welding
brittle cast irons, when a filler with a very different composition and , therefore, properties is
used. These welds are called heterogeneous.

~ 17 ~
Day 11

Date : 13.06.2023

Polishing machine process

Generally, polishing involves using an abrasive material to finish a metal

surface. It aims at removing scratches and nicks form finished machined parts while
improving their shine and luster. As a result of buffing a polished surface, we get a mirror
bright finish.

Once the roughing step is complete, a quick cut abrasive past helps to
brush up the affected area or the entire part surface . Thus, the polishing surface finish
process uses wool berets and polishing sponges to help spread the abrasive paste. The
sponges and berets come in different degrees of hardness. Hence, we can achieve a different

~ 18 ~
polished surface grade for prototypes and custom parts. After the polishing process,
microfiber cloth can help with the effective cleaning of the surface.
