1. Prepared materials needed.
2. Checked the temperature in the DR to be 25-
28°C.
3. Removed all jewelry then washed hands
thoroughly observing the WHO 1-2-3-4-5-
procedure.
4. Prepared a clear, clean newborn resuscitation
area on a firm and flat surface. Checked the
equipment if clean, functional and within easy
reach.

5. Arranged materials/ supplies after the complete


breastfeed (measuring tape, eye ointment,
stethoscope [to symbolize PE] Vit. k, hepatitis B and
BCG vaccines with T. syringes and cotton
balls/alcohol etc.)
6.Washed hands and put 2 pairs of sterile gloves
aseptically
FIRST 30 SECONDS
7. Thoroughly dried the baby for at least 30
seconds, starting from the face and head, going
down to the trunk and extremities while performing
a quick check for breathing.
8. Removed the wet linen. Covered baby with the
dry cloth.
1-3 MINUTES
9. Removed the wet linen.

10. Place the baby in skin-to-skin contact on the


mother’s abdomen or chest.
11. Covered baby with the dry cloth and the baby’s
head with a bonnet
12. Excluded a 2nd baby by palpating the abdomen
in preparation for giving oxytocin.
13. Gave IM oxytocin within one minute of baby’s
birth after wiping the soiled gloves with the wet
cloth
14. Removed 1st set of gloves after positioning the
baby for cord clamping.
15. Palpated umbilical cord to check for pulsations.
16. After pulsations stopped, clamped the cord
using the plastic clamp 2cm from the base of the
umbilicus.
17. Placed the Kelly forceps as the 2nd clamp, 5cm. from
the base of the umbilicus
18. Cut near plastic clamp (not midway)
19. Checked baby’s color and breathing
20. Advised mother to maintain skin-to-skin contact.
Baby should be prone on mothers chest/in between the
breasts with the head turned to one side.

15 TO 90 MINUTES OF LIFE
21. Advised mother to observe for feeding cues and
cited examples of feeding cues.

24. After a complete breastfeed, administered eye
ointment (first) did thorough physical examination,
then gave Vit.K. hepatitis B and BCG injections
(simultaneously explained purpose of each
intervention)
a. Applied erythromycin ointment by pulling the
lower eyelid away from the eye to
make space. Squeezed a thin strip of the ointment
into this space(inner to outer canthus). A 1 cm strip
is usually enough. Gently close the eyes and keep it
closed for 1-2 min. Repeat steps to the other eye.
b. Inject hepatitis B 0.5cc IM on the right vastus
lateralis.
c. Injected a single dose of Vitamin K 1mg (0.1cc) IM
on the left vastus lateralis(opposite site of where
you gave the Hepa B).

25. Advised OPTIONAL/DELAYED bathing of baby


(and was able to explain the rationale).
26. Thoroughly examined the baby. Get the
Anthropometric measurements
and record.
(A) Measured the length of the baby from the
occiput down to the sole of the infant’s
foot.
(B) Looped the tape before slipping it over the
head. Taking care that the side of the tape
marked in centimeters is on the outside for
the reading, with the zero end in the
inferior position;
Anchored the tape just above the
eyebrows, with the zero point on the side
closest to him or her. At the back of the
head, the tape is positioned over the fullest
protuberance of the skull.
(C) Put the tape around the infant’s chest
exactly above the nipple line
(D) Put the tape around the infant’s abdomen
exactly above the umbilicus.
(E) Weigh the baby
27. Checked for birth injuries,
malformations or defects..
28. Clothed the baby and wrapped the baby with
linen.
29. Advised breastfeeding per demand.
30. In the first hour, checked the baby's breathing
and color and checked the mother's vital signs and
massaged the uterus every 15 mins.
31. n the second hour: checked mother-baby dyad
every 30 mins. – 1hr.
32. Disinfected and discarded all the contaminated
materials.
33. Performed hand hygiene.
34. Documented/ completed all records needed.
