Steps In Solving Rational
Equations
1.Note any value of the variable that
would make any denominator zero.
2.Find the least common
denominator or LCD.
3.Multiply the whole equation by the
LCD.
4.Simplify the resulting linear or
quadratic equation.
Example #1
𝟕 𝟑 𝟏
1. − 𝟐 = 𝟐
𝟒𝐱 𝐱 𝟐𝐱
Step 1: The value of the variable that
would make the denominators 0 is 0.
So, x ≠ 0.
Example #1
𝟕 𝟑 𝟏
1. − 𝟐 = 𝟐
𝟒𝐱 𝐱 𝟐𝐱
Step 2: Find the LCD
𝟐
LCD = 𝟒𝒙
Example #1
𝟕 𝟑 𝟏
1. − 𝟐 = 𝟐
𝟒𝐱 𝐱 𝟐𝐱
Step 3: Multiply the whole equation by the
LCD.
Example #1
x 𝟕 𝟑 𝟏 2
𝟐 𝟐
𝟒𝒙 − 𝟐
= 𝟐
𝟒𝒙
𝟒𝐱 𝐱 𝟐𝐱
7x -12 = 2
Example #1
𝟕𝒙 = 𝟐 + 𝟏𝟐
𝟕𝒙 = 𝟏𝟒
Example #1
𝟕𝒙 = 𝟏𝟒
𝟕 𝟕
𝒙=𝟐
Example #2
𝒙+𝟑 𝒙+𝟔
2. =
𝟒 𝟔
Step1: There is no restriction in this
case because there is no variable in the
denominator.
Example #2
𝒙+𝟑 𝒙+𝟔
2. =
𝟒 𝟔
Step 2: Find the LCD
LCD = 𝟏𝟐
Example #2
𝒙+𝟑 𝒙+𝟔
2. =
𝟒 𝟔
Step 3: Multiply the whole equation by
the LCD.
Example #2
3 𝒙+𝟑 𝒙+𝟔 2
𝟏𝟐 = 𝟏𝟐
𝟒 𝟔
3x +9 = 2x +12
Example #2
𝟑𝒙 − 𝟐𝒙 = 𝟏𝟐 − 𝟗
𝒙=𝟑
Example #3 Try this!
𝒙 − 𝟒 𝟐𝒙 − 𝟔
=
𝟑 𝟖
Example #3 Try this!

Work Problem:
During the Taal volcano eruption in
January 12, 2020, Vincent and
Joshua volunteered in repacking food
boxes for the displaced families in the
affected areas. Vincent can make 100
food packs in 5 hours while Joshua
make 100 food packs in 3 hours. If
they work together, how long will it
take to make 100 food packs?
Work Problem:
Formula:
Vincent = 5 hours
Joshua = 3 hours
