Theory of knowledge - Planning and progress form


Completion of this form The completion of this form by each candidate and their teacher for theory of knowledge is a
mandatory requirement. This will strengthen the process of writing the essay and support the authenticity of a candidate's
work. Each completed form must be submitted to the IB, but will not be marked.

Candidate This form must be completed during the planning and progress of your essay. It is a record of three interactions
with your teacher. The first interaction should focus on discussing the prescribed titles and choosing the title for your essay. In
your second interaction you should discuss the development of your ideas in relation to your chosen title, and you may present
to your teacher an exploration of those ideas in some written form. This will allow you to create a plan for the structure of your
essay. For your final interaction you are encouraged to present to your teacher a full draft of your essay. The teacher is
permitted to provide written comments on your draft, but will not mark or edit your draft.

Teacher You must have at least three interactions with each candidate; one early on in the process to discuss the prescribed
titles, an interim session to discuss progress and a final session at which the candidate should present a full draft. Other
interactions are permitted, but only these three should be recorded on this form.

Prescribed title:
“The quality of knowledge is best measured by how many people accept it.” Discuss this claim with reference to two areas of
knowledge.

We looked at the list of titles in class and I knew I definitely wanted to do either title 1 or title 09/01/19
6. I talked to Miss XXXX about the titles and I decided on title 1. I think the word "best" will
make it a good essay to write because I can argue about whether it is really the best or not.

She said I should now go ahead and start planning my essay.

Today I met with my teacher and got feedback on my plan. I want to use Arts and Natural 18/01/19
Sciences as my 2 AOKS because I think it will be good for having different examples that
show different things. We talked about how important examples are in the essay. We also

were not accepted while they were alive. She also advised me that I should add a conclusion
to my essay in my plan.

I gave in a draft of my essay and got feedback. My teacher said there are lots of good things 31/01/19
in the essay but suggested that I take out the dictionary definitions. She also said that the
section on the Arts loses focus on the title a bit at the moment. She suggested I go back and

Teacher's comments:
This student was fully engaged throughout the essay writing process. She discussed her ideas with me in class and
presented both an initial outline plan and then a full draft of the essay. Each stage of the process saw both her own
thoughtful insights and also her taking on board my feedback. The style of writing in the final essay is entirely in line with the
draft and with other written work she has submitted throughout the TOK course.
