Introduction
All praise is to Allah, the Lord of the worlds and peace and blessings
be upon the Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions. To
proceed:

In every season of the year are signs and benefits. Within its days
and hours are warnings and reminders. Winter is most intense in its
temperatures so it is the season which people prepare the most for in
order to protect themselves. Hence within it are lessons and insights
that cannot be found in any season besides it.

Pondering upon these signs of Allah has been highly encouraged in

many verses in the Quran. The observant believer with a living heart
takes lessons and reflections from that which he sees from the creation
of Allah.

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation
of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.Who
remember Allāh while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give
thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], "Our Lord,
You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then
protect us from the punishment of the Fire.1

There are also many statements of the Salaf about pondering on

Allah’s signs:

‘Umar bin ‘Abdil-‘Aziz said: Speech containing the remembrance of

Allah is good, pondering on the blessings of Allah: it is the best of
worship.4

Al-Hasan said: Pondering for one hour is better than standing the
night.5

5 Ahmad in Az-Zuhd 272

Abu Sulayman Ad-Dārāni said: When I step out of my house, my
gaze does not land on anything except that I see a blessing of Allah in it
and a reminder for me in it.6

Bishr bin Al-Harith said: If people were to ponder upon the

greatness of Allah they would not disobey Allah.7

There are numerous benefits to pondering. From them are:

1. Reflecting upon the signs of Allah through hearing and sight is a

path to know Allah, have conviction in him and affirm his Lordship.
It necessitates rejecting from Allah that which does not befit him
and affirming that which befits his magnificence and glory. The Lord
who sent these signs and fashioned creation is Allah, the one who
has ability over everything, whom there is no true Lord besides and
none worthy of worship besides him. This is because the creation of
Allah indicates to a creator who created it and necessitates his
existence, ability, will and knowledge as well as his wisdom, mercy
and perfection.

We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves
until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. But is it not sufficient
concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?8

2. Reflection is an action of the heart. Rather it is from the best
actions of the heart and the most beneficial for it. Since worship is
an action of the limbs and the heart is the most noble of limbs, its
action is of the most noble.

3. Reflecting and pondering establishes servitude to Allah and

causes a slave to increase in obedience of him.

4. Reflecting and pondering is a path of knowledge. Wahb bin

Munnabih said: The thinking of a person has never grown longer
except that he gains understanding in it, and a person has never
understood something except that he gains knowledge of it and a
person has never gained knowledge of something except that he
acts upon it.

5. Reflecting and pondering obstructs a person from the

disobedience of Allah because it inherits fear of Allah in his heart
and he sees the greatness of Allah through his creation, blessings
and signs.

6. Reflecting and pondering delivers a person from the death of

heedlessness to the life of attentiveness and raises a person from
falling to the level of animals which do not have intellect or
understanding.

7. Taking signs and reminders is from the way of those who

preceded us and the path of the righteous.

The Cold of Jahannam
Winter is a reminder of the bitter cold of Jahannam.

." ‫ ْم َه ِري ِر‬.‫د َما َتج ِ ُدو َن ِم َن الز‬v ‫ش‬َ َ ‫ َوأ‬،‫ا ْل َح ;ر‬

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (‫ )ﷺ‬said, "The (Hell) Fire

complained to its Lord saying, 'O my Lord! My different parts eat up each
other.' So, He allowed it to take two breaths, one in the winter and the other
in summer, and this is the reason for the severe heat and the bitter cold you
find (in weather).9

Al-Hasan said: Every cold which has destroyed something is from

the breath of Jahannam and every heat which has destroyed something
is from the breath of Jahannam.

Ponder upon the meaning of the word: ‫( نَ ـ ـ ـ ـ ـ ـفَـس‬breath). The intent is

not a door or a window, this cold and this heat is merely a breath. This
word indicates a minuscule amount. In a narration of Muslim it
mentions:

9 Sahih al-Bukhari 3260

So whatever you perceive in the form of intense cold or hurting cold is
from the exhalation of Hell. And whatever you perceive in the form of
extreme heat or intense beat is from the exhalation of Hell.10

Nothing prevents cold being from the breath of Jahannam because

the intent of the hellfire is its place which is Jahannam and it has a level
which is of severe cold.

10 Sahih Muslim 617c

Weakness of Man
From the lessons that can be taken in winter is the manifestation of
the weakness of man due to the cold and its effects on him.

The weakness of man is a reality no person would deny and has

been affirmed by Allah in his book. He 9 says:

And Allāh wants to lighten for you [your difficulties]; and mankind was
created weak.11

Allah affirms this so that a person knows his reality and he 9

reminds of it constantly so that a person with health, strength and
richness does not exceed the bounds such that he displays haughtiness
and pride while forgetting his origin and falling into a dispraise-worthy
outcome.

When Ibn Al-Qayyim transmits the statements of the Salaf regarding

the meaning of this verse such as the explanation of ‫ض ـ ـ ـ ـ ـ ـ ْعــف‬
َ (weakness)
being that he cannot be patient with regards to women or that he is
created from disdained liquid or that it refers to the weakness of his
determination against the force of his desires, he then states: {The
correct opinion is that his weakness encompasses all of this and his
weakness is greater than all of this and more, for he is weak in
physique, weak in strength, weak in will, weak in knowledge, weak in

11 4:28

patience etc. The problems and evils which come to him from his
weakness are faster than a flood on a slope. Therefore by necessity he
requires a protector, a helper who gives him strength, helps him, gives
him victory and aids him. If the one who aids him abandons him, his
destruction is closer to him than his own self }.

A humans weakness becomes evident in winter when he cannot

bear the frost and the cold air, particularly if he is out in the open or
travelling. He requires that which will shelter him by means of clothes,
coverings and food.

Then his weakness is also apparent when he is affected by the

sicknesses of winter such as a cold or flu. This is why you find some
people when winter comes they become apprehensive of the cold and
long for summer. Then when summer arrives they become
apprehensive of it and wish for winter. The lesson in this is that he then
acknowledges his own weakness and knows that he has no strength or
might so he flees to his Lord and creator to protect and shelter him
after taking the means that he is commanded to take.

Insulting the Wind
The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬would make the following Dua when there was

'Ata' b. Rabah reported on the authority of 'A'isha, the wife of the

Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him), who said: Whenever the wind
was stormy, the Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬used to say: O Allah! I ask Thee
for what is good in it, and the good which it contains, and the good of
that which it was sent for. I seek refuge with Thee from what is evil in
it, what evil it contains, and the evil of that what it was sent for; and
when there was a thunder and lightning in the sky, his colour underwent a
change, and he went out and in, backwards and forwards; and when the
rain came, he felt relieved, and I noticed that (the sign of relief) on his face.
'A'isha asked him (about it) and he said: It may be as the people of 'Ad said:
When they saw a cloud formation coming to their valley they said: " It is a
cloud which would give us rain" (Qur'an, xlvi. 24).12

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬also prohibited insulting the wind:

The Blessing of Rain
Rain is from the blessings of Allah on his creation, a blessed and
pure water, fresh and sweet, with it is the life of the earth and its
beauty, with it is the sustenance of mankind, animals and crops. It is
from the greatest signs of Allah in existence. Allah describes it as mercy
and sends winds as glad tidings of goodness and provision, as an
announcement of the end of despair and drought and as messengers of
happiness and delight in the souls of people.

The mercy in the verse is referring to rain as the majority of
explanations of the Quran explain.
before His mercy” means “‫ َ ـ ـ ـطَر‬£‫ـ يَ ـ ـ ـ َد ْي ا‬
َ ْ ‫ بَ ـ ـ ـ‬before His rain”. Likewise Allah
states:

And it is He who sends down the rain after they had despaired and
spreads His mercy. And He is the Protector, the Praiseworthy.19

So observe the effects of the mercy of Allāh - how He gives life to the
earth after its lifelessness. Indeed, that [same one] will give life to the dead,
and He is over all things competent.20

Rain is called mercy because it is from the most complete blessings

and most honourable and greatest in its effects. It is the origin of the
continuation of life because of what is derived from it for the benefits
for people, animals, crops and other than it.

Also from Allah’s mercy is that he brings down the rain in small
droplets. If he had caused it to pour down it would have damaged the
ground and destroyed crops. So glory be to him whose stature is so
great, whose power is so mighty and whose proof is so clear.

The Sunnah of Rainfall
It is a recommended Sunnah to expose the skin during rainfall.

This is by a person uncovering some of his garment and exposing

some of his body such as his head or his arm or his shin etc in order for
the rain to fall on him. This is out of happiness of the blessing of Allah
and because the rain is upon its purity and has not touched the earth
or mixed with other than it.

Anas (b. Malik) reported: It rained upon us as we were with the

Messenger of Allah (‫)ﷺ‬. The Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him)
removed his cloth (from a part of his body) till the rain fell on it. We said:
Messenger of Allah, why did you do this? He said: It is because it (the
rainfall) has just come from the Exalted Lord.21

Al-Qurtubi said: This means by its origination from its Lord and this
from the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬is finding delight and blessing in the rain and
seeking cure in it because Allah called it a mercy, blessed and pure and
made it a cause for life. Another benefit from the narration is the
veneration for rain.

21 Sahih Muslim 898

Shaykh Abdul-Azīz Ibn Bāz said: It is recommended for a Muslim to
expose some of his body when it rains so that some of the rain falls on
him as per the action of the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬. So he exposes a part of his
body like his arm or head till rain falls upon it.

The Blessing of Clothes
Clothes are from the great blessings of Allah upon his creation. They
cover the body, protect it from the changes in weather and from heat
and cold. In addition to this they are a form of beautification and
adornment.

Ponder on the types of clothes and colours and details and

differences. All of this is to observe the needs of the body.

Allah has mentioned in the Quran that which protects us from the
cold:

And the grazing livestock He has created for you; in them is warmth
and [numerous] benefits, and from them you eat.22

This verse comes in the beginning of Surah An-Nahl which is also

ُ Surah of Blessings. Allah mentions in its beginning
the foundations of blessings which are crucial for the establishment of
life and in the middle of it the completion of his blessings:

And Allāh has made for you, from that which He has created, shadows
[i.e., shade] and has made for you from the mountains, shelters and has
made for you garments which protect you from the heat and garments
[i.e., coats of mail] which protect you from your [enemy in] battle. Thus
does He complete His favour upon you that you might submit [to Him].23

If clothes had no importance in the life of people except that it

protected them from cold and heat, it would be of enough importance
and a sign of the greatness of Allahs blessings upon his slaves.

From the ways of being thankful of the blessing of clothes is to

remember those who are enduring severe cold and do not find that
which can shelter them in the winter. From them are women, children
and orphans who need clothes to keep them warm just as they need
food to eat.

Wiping Over the Socks
Wiping over socks is from the blessings of Allah and from his mercy
and ease upon his slaves. In the winter people are in great need of
wearing that which keeps their feet warm.

Anything which covers the feet can be wiped over, if it is worn upon
purity for a duration of one day and night for a resident and 3 days and
nights for a traveller.

The duration is not considered by the amount of prayers as some

people mistakenly believe that it can only be wiped over for 5 prayers.
A person can be wiping for more than 5 prayers. It is based on time so a
resident can wipe 24 hours and a traveller for 72 hours.

The duration of wiping begins from the first time the person wipes
over the socks, not when the socks are worn nor when a person breaks
their Wudhu because the Shari’ah came with the word ‫ـسح‬
ْ ‫ َ ـ ـ‬£‫( ا‬to wipe) in
the Hadith:

It was narrated that Shuraih bin Hani' said: "I asked 'Aishah about
wiping over the Khuffs and she said: 'Go to 'Ali, for he knows more about
that than I do.' So I went to 'Ali and asked him about wiping (over the
Khuffs) and he said: 'The Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬used to tell us to wipe

(over the Khuffs) for one day and one night for the resident, and three for
the traveler.'"24

The socks that a person wears must cover up to the ankles because
that which does not cover the ankle is not named a sock. The ankle is
obligatory to wash in Wudhu so if it is exposed it becomes obligatory to
wash it.

The wiping is done by wetting the hands with water then wiping
with the top of the fingers along the feet up to the ‫سـاق‬. The right hand is
used to wipe the top of the right foot and the left hand for the top of the
left foot.

Complaining of the Weather
Narrations from the Salaf indicate that it is disliked to speak about
the weather in unnecessary ways.

Bishr Al-Hāfi said: A man once said: How cold is it today! So a man
turned to him and said: Have you become warm now? If you remained
silent it would have been better for you.

Imam Adh-Dhahabi said: A statement such as this is permissible,

however they would dislike excessive speech. Scholars differed
regarding permissible speech, whether it is written by the angels or
whether they only write that which is good and rewarded and that
which is bad and sinful. That which is correct is that everything is
written.

Winter is the Spring of the
Believer

Imam Ahmad narrates from Abu Saeed Al-Khudri from the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬
the statement; Winter is the spring of the believer. Al-Bayhaqi and others
add: Its night is long so he stands in it and its day is short so he fasts it.

Ibn Rajab says: Winter is the spring of the believer because in it he

plants the gardens of obedience and grazes in the fields of worship and
his heart strolls in the gardens of actions which are easy for him just as
animals graze in the pastures of spring so their bodies gain weight and
are healthy. Likewise the religion of the believer thrives in winter with
what Allah makes easy for him in worship.

In winter the days shorten and the weather cools, therefore fasting
becomes easy and there is no great burden of hunger or thirst. Imam
At-Tirmidhi, Imam Ahmad and others narrate from the Hadith of ‘Āmir
bin Mas’ūd that he said that the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

ِ َ ‫الشت‬
" ‫اء‬ ; ‫الص ْو ُم ِفي‬ َ ‫ال " ا ْلغ َِن‬
. ُ‫يم ُة ا ْلبَا ِر َدة‬ ٍ ‫س ُع‬
َ ‫ عليه وسلم َق‬c‫ ِبي; صلى ا‬. ‫ َع ِن الن‬،‫ود‬ ِ ‫َع ْن َع‬
ْ ‫ام ِر ْب ِن َم‬

From ‘Āmir bin Masūd from the messenger ‫ ﷺ‬he said: The cold prize??
is fasting in winter.

The Muslim should strive to perform voluntary fasts in winter such
as Mondays and Thursdays and three days of every month and it is best
for these to be on the white days.

The texts from the Sunnah indicate to the virtue of this. When a
person fasts in winter and tastes the pleasure of fasting and senses its
ease and attains its great reward he may crave it and remain persistent
upon it for the whole year so his fasting in winter becomes a reason for
his obedience being extended.

In the winter the night becomes longer so the soul can have its
share of sleep then the slave can stand for prayer while he is rested.
Therefore in the winter he combines between sleep that he needs and
attaining his portion of Quran and accomplishes benefit for his religion
and rest for his body.

This is different to the night of summer which due to its shortness

and heat overpowers a person with sleep. So a person rarely takes all of
his share of sleep so his standing the night requires exertion.

Standing in the night is difficult upon the soul from different angles.
From them:

1. Praying in the night generally is difficult upon the soul. The night
is a time of sleeping and rest from the fatigue of the day so leaving
off sleep while the soul leans towards it is a great exertion.

2. From the angle of the pain of the soul by standing from the bed
in extreme cold.

Charity in Winter
Charity in winter has great significance. Just as we feel the severity
of the cold and wish to warm our bodies with clothes, food and
coverings, we have brothers and sisters in our religion who face our
Qiblah and pray our Salah and do not find that which can protect them
from the cold and its harms.

The verses and Ahādith which encourage charity are many

especially when there is a need for it. From them is:

It is the freeing of a slave. Or feeding on a day of severe hunger. An

orphan of near relationship. Or a needy person in misery.25

These verses encourage performing good deeds, of which is charity

and at the time of severe hunger.

'Atiyyah Al-'Awfi narrated from Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri,that The
Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said: "Whichever believer feeds a hungry
believer , Allah feeds him from the fruits of Paradise on the Day of
Resurrection. Whichever believer gives drink to a thirsty believer, Allah
gives him to drink from the 'sealed nectar' on the Day of Resurrection.
Whichever believer clothes a naked believer, Allah clothes him from the
green garments of Paradise."26

If charity coincides with the need of the one being given to, then its
effect is bigger, its benefit is greater and its reward is more abundant
with Allah.

Charity is a cause for the protection of a persons wealth, body and

family. It is also an indication of communal solidarity and mercy
between creation. It is a proof of the acknowledgement of a slave for
the favours of Allah upon him and his gratitude for his blessings. So it is
incumbent a person gives from his extra clothes in charity or food or
coverings which can be benefitted from so that he may find it stored
with Allah when he is in his greatest need on the Day of Judgement.

A person should also strive to spend from the good of the wealth
which he has:
