Exercise 1. Find domain of the given functions.

Exercise 2. In a certain state the maximum speed permitted on freeways is 65 mi/h and
the minimum speed is 40 mi/h . The fine for violating these limits is $15 for every mile per
hour above the maximum speed or below the minimum speed. Express the amount of the
fine F as a function of the driving speed x and graph for F (x) for 0 ≤ x ≤ 100.

Exercise 3. In a certain country, income tax is assessed as follows. There is no tax on


income up to $10 000. Any income over $10 000 is taxed at a rate of 10%, up to an income
of $20 000. Any income over $20 000 is taxed at 15%.

(a) Sketch the graph of the tax rate R as a function of the income I.

(b) How much tax is assessed on an income of $14 000? On $26 000?

(c) Sketch the graph of the total assessed tax T as a function of the income I.

Exercise 6. Biologists have noticed that the chirping rate of crickets of a certain species
is related to temperature, and the relationship appears to be very nearly linear. A cricket
produces 113 chirps per minute at 70◦ F and 173 chirps per minute at 80◦ F
(a) Find a linear equation that models the temperature T as a function of the number of
chirps per minute N .

(b) What is the slope of the graph? What does it represent?

(c) If the crickets are chirping at 150 chirps per minute, estimate the temperature.

Exercise 13. In a theater, the screen is 2.4m high, located 8.5m above the ground. How
far back from the screen should we stand in order to view the screen under the maximum
angle?

Exercise 14. An importer of Rwandan coffee estimates that local consumers will buy

Exercise 15. A particle moving on the x-axis has position s(t) = t3 − 9t2 + 24t + 20 after
an elapsed time of t seconds. Find the velocity, acceleration of the particle at time t. What
is the total distance traveled by the particle during the first 8 seconds?

Exercise 16. (a) Let f (x) = sinh(x). Find (f −1 )0 (0).

(b) Let f (x) = x + e( x). Find (f −1 )0 (1).

Exercise 17. The population of Americans age 55 year and older as a percentage of the
total population is approximated by the function

f (t) = 10.72 (0.9t + 10)0.3 , 0 ≤ t ≤ 20

where t is measured in the years and t = 0 corresponds to the year 2000.

(a) Find f −1 (25) and interpret the result.

(b) Find (f −1 )0 (25) and interpret the result.

Exercise 18. Suppose that the moon is really spherical. The radius of the moon is estimated
by 1737 km with a possible error 0.02. Use differential to approximate the maximum error
in calculating the surface area of the moon.

Exercise 19. Let functions f (x) and g(x) be differentiable at any values in their domains
,and h(x) = xf (x2 + 1), k(x) = f (x) + g(3x − 1). Compute h0 (1) and k 0 (0) given that

f (0) = 1, f 0 (0) = 2, g(−2) = 2, g 0 (−2) = 1.

Exercise 20. A balloon is rising at a constant speed of 5ft/s. A boy is cycling along a
straight road at a speed of 15ft/s. When he passes under the balloon, it is 45 ft above him.
How fast is the distance between the boy and the balloon increasing 3 s later?

slides away from the wall at a rate of 0.5 (ft/s) , how fast is the top of the ladder sliding
