History of Technology Assignment

Your Task: With a partner or by yourself, examine the history of one piece of computer related
technology. In other words, look into any SMART device and tell me how it evolved into its current state.
You will also be discussing the “top of the line” models and predicting its future. The following is a list of
suggested technologies to choose from:

Virtual Reality Augmented Reality Assistive Technology


Music Players Wearable Technology Digital Cameras
Graphics Cards Storage Devices Processors
Internet Connections Gaming Consoles Nanotechnology
Calculators Cell Phones Robots
Medical Imaging (X-ray, MRI, Cars Artificial Intelligence
etc.)
Portable Computers Any other topic you can think of as long as it is approved by Mr.
(Laptop/Tablets) Nishiyama

Part 1 – History of Technology


Choose a platform to create your presentation with (Powerpoint, Google Slides, Prezi, Sutori). Your
presentation should include:

1. Introduction (1-2 Slides)


• Title and Name of group members
• Introduce your topic and include a discussion about why you are interested in the topic (2-3
sentences)
• Picture of the item(s)

2. Steps in History (4-8 Slides)


• Each group member is responsible for creating 4 slides. Each slide represents an important
step in the history of your technology. History of Technology Slides should include:
• Title of slide should contain the year/era/phase and the name of the device
• Choose one of the following exact sentences
o “The _________ was the first _______ to __________”
o “It had a ______________ which was unique because ______________
o “ This was the first time someone was able to ______________”
• Complete the following sentence “I think this was an important development
because_____”
• List the company or inventor’s name
• Include a relevant picture

3. Opinion Question (1-2 Slides) - Answer 1 of the following questions


• a) When did your technology become “SMART”?
• What does it mean to describe a technology as “smart”? You can define this in any
reasonable way you choose.
• When did your technology first start to be “smart”?
• b) How smart is it today?
• How computerized is your device today? How many computers or processors are in
typical models today? How have computers become more important to this
technology? How do people use computers to interact with them?
• Find an article online that supports your answer.

4. Putting it all into Perspective - Choose 1 of the following options


• a) Who would have been impacted the most?
• Go back to each of your history slides and add one sentence describing who this
development was aimed for (eg. Teenagers, seniors, business people, a specific
industry, etc)
• b) Add to your history
• Find a website that has a year by year breakdown of events in the history of the

• Go back to each of your history slides and add a sections that says, “This year in
history…” and add an event or 2 that helps to describe the era

Part 2 – The Present and the Future!


You will be adding a few more slides onto the end of your presentation.
1. You will be comparing 2 top of the line models for your technology (1-2 Slides). Your job is to
convince me which is better and why. Your slide should include:
- Pictures of the 2 models you are comparing
- 3-5 key features to compare
- Explanation of your choice (2-3 sentences)
2. Make a prediction regarding the next big leaps your technology will undergo in the future (1
paragraph). Be as detailed as possible (Don’t just say “better graphics” or “faster”)
- Explain why your item will become more or less popular/important in the future.
