One and Two Step Equations

The document provides examples and practice problems for solving one-step and two-step equations. It explains that to solve one-step equations, you must isolate the variable by doing the inverse operation of what is being performed on the variable. For two-step equations, the goal is also to isolate the variable by first undoing operations that do not involve the variable, then undoing operations involving the variable. It gives 20 practice problems for students to solve one-step and two-step equations.

Name: __________________________________________Date _____________

ONE-STEP EQUATIONS Main goal: To isolate the variable

To solve an equations you must do inverse operation until the variable is alone.

Example 1 Solve x + 4 = 12

1. What is the variable? The variable is: x x + 4 = 12 - 4

2. What operation is being performed on the variable? Addition
3. xWhat is the inverse operation? subtraction
Solve for
4. Check your answer: substitute the value on the original equation.
x =8
8 + 4 = 12

I. Solve the following one-step equations, show procedures.

1. x + 2 = 10 7. x – (-4) = 3 15. -13m =39

2. 3x = -15
8. 3 = -x 16. z + (-13) = -27

3. -4 + x = 12
9. w + 14 =8 17. p - (-27) =13
