Science Project Final 1

The document discusses the causes and prevention of fires. It defines combustion as a chemical reaction between substances that produces heat and light. The three conditions needed for combustion are fuel, oxygen, and an ignition source of heat. Different types of fires are classified based on the materials burning. Fires can be extinguished by removing oxygen using techniques like smothering with a blanket. The document also provides four ways to prevent fires such as inspecting heating sources and storing flammables correctly.

DEFINE COMBUSTION
❑ The process of burning
something
❑ A chemical reaction between
substances, usually including OXYGEN HEAT
oxygen and usually
accompanied by the
generation of heat and light in
the form of flame

FUEL
WHAT ARE THE CONDITIONS NEEDED FOR
COMBUSTION?

There are three essential conditions for the

combustion of fuels.......
➢ There must be fuel to burn.
➢ There must be air to supply oxygen.
➢ There must be heat ( ignition temperature ) to
start and continue the combustion process.
THE SUBSTANCE USED IN A FIRE EXTINGUISHER
DIFFERS BASED ON THE TYPES OF MATERIALS ON
FIRE .
These can be divided into six fire classes involving different substances
1. Class A: fire caused by combustible carbon-based solids such as paper,
wood or textiles.
2. Class B: fire caused by flammable liquids eg: paraffin, petrol, diesel or oil (
but not cooking oil).
3. Class C: fire caused by flammable gases eg: butane, propane or
methane.
4. Class D: fire caused by burning metals eg: aluminum, lithium or
magnesium.
5. Class E: fire caused by electrical equipment ( indicated by an electric
spark symbol and not the letter E).
6. Class F: fire caused by fats and cooking oil.
FIRE CAN BE EXTINGUISHES BY REMOVING ONE OF THE
CONDITIONS NEEDED FOR COMBUSTION USING
DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES . EXPLAIN AND GIVE EXAMPLE.
The general procedure is to prevent fresh air from reaching the seat of
the fire, allowing the combustion to reduce the oxygen content in the
confined atmosphere until it extinguishes itself, for example by :-
1) Snuffing out candles
2) Smothering a pan with a fire blanket
3) Wrapping a person in a fire blanket

T
HOW DOES THE FIRE BLANKET
WORKS
A fire blanket is a highly flame-resistant blanket
that can be used to extinguish a small fire or to
wrap around a person in case of a fire. Fire
blankets are made from two layers of woven glass
fiber fabric and an inner layer of fire retardant film.
They work by cutting off the oxygen supply on the
fire.

GIVE FOUR WAYS TO PREVENT FIRE
1) Inspect your heating sources- there is also the potential of having
something come about due to someone playing in or around the
heating source of the school. Things can easily catch fire with that
much heat, and whether it is intentional or not, does not matter.
2) Store any flammable products correctly- these are started due
to something faulty near the heating source or the equipment.
3) Maintain your wires- these are very common when something shorts
out and is near something that can easily spark and catch fire.
4) Be cautions with open flames- because schools often have a lot
of cooking equipment in the kitchens, there are many potential
problems that can come from them. It could be a small grease fire or
a gas fire.
