Chapter 1
Introduction

A. Learning Objectives
Students are able to introduce themselves and introduce others
correctly. This chapter presents communication techniques to establish a
relationship. Some of these materials were taken from (1)

B. Reading
Read and retell the story

My Personal Life
For me there was no moment of divine intervention, no following the
footsteps of an admired parent or relative but rather a gradual
realization that nursing would be the perfect career for me.
I have been lucky enough to have had the pleasure of meeting
some healthcare professionals who have inspired me and I hope to one
day equal their skill, diligence and passion.
I think my main source of inspiration to become a nurse comes from
an innate desire to help people and care for them in times of need. I am
also a person who thrives on being challenged and I always have new
goals to achieve, so nursing suits me as few other careers offer as much
diversity and learning opportunities.
During my experience volunteering at a local hospice, I realized
that palliative care is a wonderful area to work in, definitely not sad and
depressing as many seem to think!
I have many lovely memories of people I have met and worked with
at the hospice. Having this experience and insight into nursing care

~1~
definitely helped me get through the nerve-wracking experience of
applying to university. It’s great to have lots of things to talk about at
an interview and my work experience certainly gave me plenty to share
and I was able to demonstrate my true passion for the profession.
I would encourage anybody interested in nursing to get some work
experience, it’s a brilliant way to find out if nursing would suit you and
can be extremely rewarding and it is looked on very favorably by
admissions tutors as well as being a lot of fun, highly insightful and a
great learning opportunity.
It was also very rewarding to feel that my input, no matter how
small, had an effect on the lives of those I was caring for.
I am due to start my degree in adult nursing this September and I
really cannot wait! I am full of beans and bursting with enthusiasm.
After a year out from study I am raring to go and get stuck into the
beginning of a career I know I will love.

Daily Routines

A. Learning Objectives
Students are able to create, present and analyse sentence
structures that have been made with the theme of daily activities

B. Reading
First of all, I do my bed until it is very tidy. After that, I sweep
the floor. I love to see my room neat and clean. When I still feel sleepy,
I walk around my house. Also, I do some physical movements to stretch
my body.
Then, I prepare some books based on schedule. I do not want to
leave any book at home. I wash my face, brush my teeth, then have a
shower. Finally, I eat breakfast after wearing my school uniform. Before
going to school, I hug my parents. I enjoy learning time at school. I like
to play with my friends too.
The school finishes at 1 p.m. After school, I change my uniform
then have lunch. I usually help parents to cook for our dinner then help
to wash dishes after eating. After watching TV for one hour, I study and
do my homework. At the end, I go to sleep at 9 p.m.

Chapter 3
Medical Equipment

A. Learning Objectives
Students are able to describe and explain the function of each
medical equipment, and make questions about the use of medical
equipment in writing

B. Reading
Drugs, medical supplies and equipment have a significant impact on
the quality of patient care and account for a high proportion of health
care costs. Health services need to make informed choices about what to
buy in order to meet priority health needs and avoid wasting limited
resources.
Many organisations have produced useful information about
essential drugs, but less information is available about essential medical
supplies and equipment. Despite the fact that there is a much wider
range of different brands and items to choose from, selecting supplies
and equipment is often given little attention. This often results in
procurement of items that are inappropriate because they are
technically unsuitable, incompatible with existing equipment, spare parts
and consumables are not available, or because staff have not been
trained to use them.
Procurement is only one part of managing medical supplies and
equipment, and effective storage, stock control, care and maintenance
are also critical if health services are to get the most out of what they
buy. However, there is also limited information available about these
aspects of management of medical supplies and equipment.

Question Tag

A. Learning Objectives
Students are able to introduce themselves and introduce others
correctly. This chapter presents communication techniques to establish a
relationship. Some of these materials were taken from (1)

B. Reading
Read and retell

Question tags are an important part of everyday communication

and perform many different functions. For example, they can be used to
get a conversation started or keep it moving; they can soften an order to
do something or they can be a more polite way to request information.
Apart from the difficulty of knowing when to use question tags
appropriately, the non-native speaker has to learn how to form them and
how to say them. The general rule is that you finish a positive statement
with a negative tag, and vice versa, using the main verb (if there is no
auxiliary) or the first auxiliary verb (if there is an auxiliary).
For example:
• It's a lovely day, isn't it?
• You've been told about the meeting, haven't you?
• You didn't do your homework, did you?
• You wouldn't have been able to do it, would you?

~ 25 ~
How you say the tag depends on the function of the tag. The
following sentence, when seen written down, is ambiguous.
• You haven't seen Sascha, have you?
This could be a genuine question; i.e. I don't know if you have seen
him or not and I want you to tell me. (In this case the tag would be
stressed and said with rising intonation). Or it could confirm what I know
to be true and expecting a response like: "No, he hasn't been here all
day." (In which case, the tag would not be stressed, and it would be said
with falling intonation.)

Parts of the body

A. Learning Objectives
Students are able to introduce themselves and introduce others
correctly. This chapter presents communication techniques to establish a
relationship. Some of these materials were taken from (1)

B. Reading
Read and retell the story

In medicine, gross anatomy, macro anatomy, or topographical

anatomy refers to the study of the biological structures that are visible
to the naked eye.
The study of gross anatomy may involve dissection or non-invasive
methods. The aim is to collect data about the larger structures of organs
and organ systems.
In dissection, the scientist cuts open the human or animal cadaver
is cut open and examines its organs.
Endoscopy inserting a tube with a camera at the end, might be
used to study structures within living animals. Endoscopy is performed
either through the mouth or through the rectum, so the gastrointestinal
tract is often the primary organ of interest.
There are also less invasive methods. For example, to study the
blood vessels of living animals or humans, the scientist may insert an
opaque dye into the animal that will highlight the circulatory system
when imaging technology, such as angiography.

~ 41 ~
Techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed
tomography (CT), or x-ray also reveal information about the inside of a
living body.
Medical and dental students perform dissection as part of their
practical work in gross human anatomy during their studies. They may
dissect a human corpse.
Students of gross anatomy will need to learn about the major body
systems.

Human body systems

There are 11 organ systems in the human body:
• The integumentary system, meaning skin, hair, nails, and so on
• Skeletal system
• Muscular system
• Lymphatic system
• Respiratory system
• Digestive system
• Nervous system
• Endocrine system, which regulates hormone production
• Cardiovascular system
• Urinary system
• Reproductive systems
Although these systems have different names, they all work
interdependently, meaning they work together and depend on each other.
