The document provides steps to calculate the resultant force of multiple vectors using the component method: 1. Draw the force vectors in an X-Y coordinate system based on their angles and directions. 2. Calculate the x- and y-components of each force vector using trigonometry. 3. Sum the x-components and y-components separately to find the total x- and y-components. 4. Use the Pythagorean theorem and tangent formula to calculate the resultant force magnitude and direction from the total x- and y-components.

To calculate the resultant force using the component method, follow these steps:

A. Draw the Vectors in an X-Y Coordinate System:

We'll draw the vectors based on the given angles and directions. Assume east is the
positive x-direction, and north is the positive y-direction.

F1: 500 N, 70 degrees south of east

Draw a vector 70 degrees from the positive x-axis, in the south direction.

F2: 800 N, south

Draw a vector straight down in the negative y-direction.

F3: 600 N, 45 degrees south of west

Draw a vector 45 degrees from the negative x-axis, in the south direction.

F4: 400 N, 20 degrees north of west

Draw a vector 20 degrees from the negative x-axis, in the north direction.

B. Complete the Table of X and Y Component Vectors for All 4 Force Vectors:

For each vector, you can calculate its x and y components using trigonometry. The
x-component is given by F * cos(θ), and the y-component is given by F * sin(θ),
where θ is the angle with respect to the positive x-axis.

Here are the components for each force:

F1: X-component: 500 * cos(70°), Y-component: 500 * sin(70°)

F2: X-component: 0 (because it's purely in the y-direction), Y-component: -800
F3: X-component: 600 * cos(45°), Y-component: -600 * sin(45°)
F4: X-component: 400 * cos(160°), Y-component: 400 * sin(160°)
C. Calculate the Sum of X and Y Components of the Resultant Vector:

Sum of X-components (ΣFx) = (500 * cos(70°)) + 0 + (600 * cos(45°)) + (400 *

cos(160°))
Sum of Y-components (ΣFy) = (500 * sin(70°)) - 800 - (600 * sin(45°)) + (400 *
sin(160°))

D. Calculate the Resultant and Its Direction:

To find the resultant (R), use the Pythagorean theorem:

R = √(ΣFx^2 + ΣFy^2)
To find the direction (θ), use the tangent formula:

θ = arctan(ΣFy / ΣFx)

Calculate the values of ΣFx, ΣFy, R, and θ using the equations above.

A. Draw the Vectors in an X-Y Coordinate System:

The vectors are drawn as described in the previous response.

B. Complete the Table of X and Y Component Vectors for All 4 Force Vectors:

F1: X-component: 500 * cos(70°) = 500 * 0.342 = 171 N, Y-component: 500 *

sin(70°) = 500 * 0.940 = 470 N
F2: X-component: 0 N (purely in the y-direction), Y-component: -800 N
F3: X-component: 600 * cos(45°) = 600 * 0.707 = 424.2 N, Y-component: -600 *
sin(45°) = -600 * 0.707 = -424.2 N
F4: X-component: 400 * cos(160°) = 400 * -0.940 = -376 N, Y-component: 400 *
sin(160°) = 400 * 0.342 = 136.8 N
C. Calculate the Sum of X and Y Components of the Resultant Vector:

Sum of X-components (ΣFx) = 171 N + 0 N + 424.2 N - 376 N = 219.2 N

Sum of Y-components (ΣFy) = 470 N - 800 N - 424.2 N + 136.8 N = -617.4 N

D. Calculate the Resultant and Its Direction:

Now, let's calculate the resultant (R) and its direction (θ) using the Pythagorean
theorem and tangent formula:

R = √(ΣFx^2 + ΣFy^2)
R = √((219.2 N)^2 + (-617.4 N)^2)
R ≈ √(48044.64 N^2 + 381213.76 N^2)
R ≈ √429258.4 N^2
R ≈ 655.25 N

θ = arctan(ΣFy / ΣFx)
θ = arctan(-617.4 N / 219.2 N)
θ ≈ arctan(-2.816)
θ ≈ -73.57 degrees (south of the east)

So, the resultant force is approximately 655.25 N, and it is at an angle of

approximately 73.57 degrees south of the east.
