B. Discussion

Suggested Instructional Flow

1. Define and Discover

In this lesson, the following key concepts will be discussed.

• Multiplying Rational Algebraic Expressions – multiply the numerators and

the denominators of the two rational algebraic expressions

Multiplying rational algebraic expressions is similar with multiplying fractions.

In order to multiply rational algebraic expressions, we can perform the
following steps:
a. Factor the numerator and denominator of each rational algebraic
expression.
b. Cancel the common factors.
c. Simplify the remaining expressions by horizontal multiplication.

Example:
𝑥 2 −9 𝑥+1
Find the product of and .
𝑥+4 𝑥−3

6
Unit 2: Rational Expressions • Grade 8
Solution:
We first factor the numerator and denominator of each rational algebraic
expression.

(𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 − 3) 𝑥 + 1

𝑥+4 𝑥−3

Cancel the common factors.

(𝑥 + 3)(𝒙 − 𝟑) 𝑥 + 1 (𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 + 1)
∙ =
𝑥+4 𝒙−𝟑 𝑥+4

Multiply the remaining numerators and multiply the remaining

denominators.

(𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 + 1) 𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 + 3
=
𝑥+4 𝑥+4

𝑥 2 −9 𝑥+1 𝑥 2 +4𝑥+3
Thus, ∙ = .
𝑥+4 𝑥−3 𝑥+4

• Dividing Rational Algebraic Expressions – get the reciprocal of the divisor

and then proceed to multiply the two rational algebraic expressions

Dividing rational algebraic expressions is similar with dividing fractions. In

order to divide rational algebraic expression, we first get the reciprocal of the
divisor then we proceed to perform multiplication.

Example:
𝑥+1 𝑥−2
Perform the following operation: ÷
𝑥 2 −2𝑥−8 𝑥 2 +2𝑥−24

Solution:
Get the reciprocal of the divisor and change the division sign to
multiplication.
𝑥+1 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 24

𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 − 8 𝑥−2

7
Unit 2: Rational Expressions • Grade 8
Factor the numerator and the denominator of each rational algebraic
expression.

𝑥+1 (𝑥 + 6)(𝑥 − 4)

(𝑥 − 4)(𝑥 + 2) 𝑥−2

Cancel the common factors.

𝑥+1 (𝑥 + 6)(𝒙 − 𝟒) 𝑥 + 1 𝑥 + 6
∙ = ⋅
(𝒙 − 𝟒)(𝑥 + 2) 𝑥−2 𝑥+2 𝑥−2

Simplify the remaining expressions by horizontal multiplication.

(𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 + 6) 𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 + 6
=
(𝑥 + 2)(𝑥 − 2) 𝑥2 − 4

𝑥+1 𝑥−2 𝑥 2 +7𝑥+6

Thus, ÷ = .
𝑥 2 −2𝑥−8 𝑥 2 +2𝑥−24 𝑥 2 −4

Example 3: Perform the indicated operation:

2𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 − 3 4𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 − 1 2𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 − 4
∙ ÷
𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 − 6 3𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 − 6 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 − 24

Solution/Explanation: 1. Get the reciprocal of the divisor and change

the division sign to multiplication.

2𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 − 3 4𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 − 1 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 − 24
∙ ∙
𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 − 6 3𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 − 6 2𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 − 4

Thus, ∙ = .
𝑦 2 −1 𝑦 2 −𝑦−20 𝑦 2 −4𝑦−5

12
Unit 2: Rational Expressions • Grade 8

Problem 3: Perform the indicated operation:

9𝑎2 + 3𝑎 − 2 6𝑎2 + 13𝑎 − 5
÷ 2
𝑎2 − 3𝑎 − 10 𝑎 − 4𝑎 − 5

Solution/Explanation: 1. Get the reciprocal of the divisor and change the

division sign to multiplication.

9𝑎2 + 3𝑎 − 2 𝑎2 − 4𝑎 − 5

𝑎2 − 3𝑎 − 10 6𝑎2 + 13𝑎 − 5

2. Factor the numerator and denominator of each

rational algebraic expression.

(3𝑎 + 2)(3𝑎 − 1) (𝑎 − 5)(𝑎 + 1)

(𝑎 + 2)(𝑎 − 5) (3𝑎 − 1)(2𝑎 + 5)

3. Cancel the common factors.

(3𝑎 + 2)(𝟑𝒂 − 𝟏) (𝒂 − 𝟓)(𝑎 + 1)

= ∙
(𝑎 + 2)(𝒂 − 𝟓) (𝟑𝒂 − 𝟏)(2𝑎 + 5)
3𝑎 + 2 𝑎 + 1
= ⋅
𝑎 + 2 2𝑎 + 5

4. Simplify the remaining expressions.

(3𝑎 + 2)(𝑎 + 1) 3𝑎2 + 5𝑎 + 2

= 2
(𝑎 + 2)(2𝑎 + 5) 2𝑎 + 9𝑎 + 10

9𝑎2 +3𝑎−2 6𝑎2 +13𝑎−5 3𝑎2 +5𝑎+2

Thus, ÷ = .
𝑎2 −3𝑎−10 𝑎2 −4𝑎−5 2𝑎2 +9𝑎+10

For group practice

1. Ask the students to form a minimum of 2 groups to a maximum of 5 groups.
2. Each group will answer problem items 4 and 5. These questions are meant to test
students’ higher-order thinking skills by working collaboratively with their peers.
3. Give students enough time to analyze the problem and work on their solution.

13
Unit 2: Rational Expressions • Grade 8
4. Ask each group to assign a representative to show their solution on the board and
discuss as a group how they come up with their solution.
5. Inform the student the accuracy of his answer and solution, and in the case when
there is some sort of misconception, give the student opportunity to work with
his/her peers to re-analyze the problem, and then lead them to the right direction to
find the correct answer.

Problem 4: What is the product when 𝑥 2 + 𝑥 is multiplied to the sum of

3𝑥−1 5−2𝑥
and ?
𝑥 2 −1 𝑥 2 −𝑥

Solution/Explanation: 1. Find the sum of

3𝑥−1
and
5−2𝑥
.
𝑥 2 −1 𝑥 2 −𝑥

The LCD of the two rational algebraic expressions is

𝑥(𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 − 1). Using this, we can rewrite them as
expressions with similar denominators. From there,
we can get their sum.

3𝑥 − 1 5 − 2𝑥
= +
𝑥2 − 1 𝑥2 − 𝑥
3𝑥 − 1 5 − 2𝑥
= +
(𝑥 − 1)(𝑥 + 1) 𝑥(𝑥 − 1)
𝒙(3𝑥 − 1) (5 − 2𝑥)(𝒙 + 𝟏)
= +
𝒙(𝑥 − 1)(𝑥 + 1) 𝑥(𝑥 − 1)(𝒙 + 𝟏)
3𝑥 2 − 𝑥 5𝑥 + 5 − 2𝑥 2 − 2𝑥
= +
𝑥(𝑥 − 1)(𝑥 + 1) 𝑥(𝑥 − 1)(𝑥 + 1)
𝟑𝒙𝟐 − 𝒙 + 𝟓𝒙 + 5 − 𝟐𝒙𝟐 − 𝟐𝒙
=
𝑥(𝑥 − 1)(𝑥 + 1)
2
𝑥 + 2𝑥 + 5
=
𝑥(𝑥 − 1)(𝑥 + 1)

𝑥 2 +2𝑥+5
Therefore, the sum is . Let us leave the
𝑥(𝑥−1)(𝑥+1)
denominator in factored form for a while since we are
still going to multiply the rational algebraic expression
by (𝑥 2 + 𝑥).

14
Unit 2: Rational Expressions • Grade 8

𝑥 2 +2𝑥+5
2. Find the product of (𝑥 2 + 𝑥) and .
𝑥(𝑥−1)(𝑥+2)

We start by getting the factors of both expressions.

𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 5
= (𝑥 2 + 𝑥) ⋅
𝑥(𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 − 1)
𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 5
= 𝑥(𝑥 + 1) ⋅
𝑥(𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 − 1)

Cancelling the common factors, we have

𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 5
= 𝒙(𝒙 + 𝟏) ∙
𝒙(𝒙 + 𝟏)(𝑥 − 1)
𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 5
=
𝑥−1

Thus, the product when 𝑥 2 + 𝑥 is multiplied to the sum of

3𝑥−1 5−2𝑥 𝑥 2 +2𝑥+5
and is .
𝑥 2 −1 𝑥 2 −𝑥 𝑥−1

Problem 5: 3𝑦 2 −14𝑦−24 4𝑦 2 −14𝑦−8

A rectangle measures units long and
𝑦 2 −9𝑦+20 2𝑦 2 −11𝑦−6
units wide. What is the area of the rectangle?

Solution/Explanation: To get the area of the rectangle, simply multiply its length to
its width.

3𝑦 2 − 14𝑦 − 24 4𝑦 2 − 14𝑦 − 8

𝑦 2 − 9𝑦 + 20 2𝑦 2 − 11𝑦 − 6

1. Factor the numerator and denominator of each

rational algebraic expression.

(3𝑦 + 4)(𝑦 − 6) 2(2𝑦 + 1)(𝑦 − 4)

(𝑦 − 4)(𝑦 − 5) (𝑦 − 6)(2𝑦 + 1)

15
Unit 2: Rational Expressions • Grade 8

2. Cancel the common factors.

(3𝑦 + 4)(𝒚 − 𝟔) 2(𝟐𝒚 + 𝟏)(𝒚 − 𝟒)

= ∙
(𝒚 − 𝟒)(𝑦 − 5) (𝒚 − 𝟔)(𝟐𝒚 + 𝟏)
3𝑦 + 4 2
= ⋅
𝑦−5 1

3. Simplify the remaining expressions.

2(3𝑦 + 4) 6 + 8
=
𝑦−5 𝑦−5

6𝑦+8
Therefore, the area of the rectangle is sq. units.
𝑦−5
