B. Discussion: Question: What is the message of the song, especially the chorus part?

“What is fortitude?”

1. Fortitude is related to the meaning of courage, but it has a deeper meaning. It is

the strength of mind that enables one to endure pain and adversity with
courage. It also implies firmness of mind and will in the face of danger or
extreme difficulty.
2. Courage is the quality or spirit that enables one to face danger or pain without
showing fear.

3. Determination is a fixed intention or resolution to attain one’s goal and aim in

life until the end.

4. Challenges will always be there to confront us. But it should not be a reason for
us to give our dreams. It is the only way to succeed in life.

Question: What are the challenges faced by you, teenagers?

VI. Lesson Development

A. Read a story about facing life’s trials and difficulties: A Carrot, An Egg, or A Coffee
Bean (SHORT JOURNAL)

A Carrot, An Egg, or A Coffee Bean

Anonymous

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so
hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up; she was
tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed that as one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a
high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first, she placed carrots; in the second, she placed
eggs; and in the last, she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without saying a
word.

In about twenty minutes, she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed
them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee
out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, “Tell me what you see.”

“Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” she replied.

Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that
they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off
the shell, she observed the hardboiled egg.

Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she
tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, “What does it mean, mother?”

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling
water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after
being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its
thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its
inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in
boiling water, they had changed the water.

“Which are you?” she asked her daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do
you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?”
VII. Exploratory Activities

A. Reflect on your experiences. (SHORT VIDEO)

a. What sad or difficult experience in the past has affected you a lot?
b. How did you respond to this trial? What was the outcome of your
reaction to this trial?

B. Group Discussion (RECITATION)

Group Activity (Break out rooms): Making Decisions

Directions: Discuss among yourselves the following problems. Make a group consensus as to
what would be the best answer to the given questions.

Dilemma 1

QUESTION: If you were a friend, what advice would you give him to ease the heavy feelings in
his heart?

Dilemma 2

QUESTIONS:
1. Aside from the pain of the loss of their father, what bigger problem posed as a threat to the
future of the family?
2. What type of character did Dante display in the midst of their problems? Give a proof for your
answer.
3. Compare Dante’s reaction with that of his mother. In your opinion, did they show the same
strength of character in facing their family problems?
4. Make a guess. Imagine what would be the future of Dante after ten years. With such courage
and determination, what future could be in store for him?
C. Reinforcing Concepts
1. Life is a series of problems. Every time you solve one, another is waiting to
take its place.
2. We need fortitude to survive successfully all of life’s adversities.
3. Three strategies to strengthen fortitude or tenacity according to
Clinebell (1995).

a. Establish relationships with people who care and love us.

b. Learn the lessons from failures, problems, and challenges in life.
c. Have a “living” hope in life.
` It means that one must have a positive outlook and believe that after the
“night” there is always “day.” For every problem, there is a solution.

VIII. Closing Activities

Assess Yourself: Are You Courageous? (SEATWORK)

Directions: Read the statements. Check the right column for your answer.

Yes No Sometimes

1. If I know I can do it, I will not give up until I succeed.

2. I am afraid to try again when I fail the first time.

3. I persevere even when the odds are against me.

4. If I don’t want to do it, no one can persuade me to do it.

5. I try to look at my failures as lessons and opportunities for

growth.

6. I don’t like people laughing at me so I don’t embarrass

myself by trying too hard.

7. I don’t do my best because I might get disappointed when I

fail.

8. Even if no one believes that I can do it, I still aim for the
best.

9. I believe that failures can help me succeed.

10. Disappointments are a given in life so I try to get over

them as fast as I can. This way I can do much better next
time.
IX. Generalization
A. Pupils state the concepts, big ideas/understandings learned.

Examples:
1. As we journey through life, we shall encounter many challenges that will “heat
us through fire.” We just need to be brave enough to face and handle any
difficulty.
2. I should be courageous and determined in facing life’s challenges so that I can
fulfill my goals in life.
3. If we are steadfast in facing all the trials that come our way with
courage/fortitude and with great determination, then we can survive, fulfill our
dreams, and succeed in life.
