• The general form of quadratic equation is

2
𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0
• There are 2 values for the variable for this type of equation

• There are three ways to solve the quadratic equation

i. Factoring method
ii. Quadratic formula method
iii. Calculator method

11
FACTORING METHOD

To get b, sum up the

combination that you

17
SIMULTANEOUS EQUATION

• Solving TWO EQUATIONS with two unknowns

1
𝟐𝒙 + 𝟐𝒚 = 𝟐
𝟐𝒙 + 𝒚 = 𝟒 2

• Solving THREE EQUATIONS with three unknowns

𝟐𝒙 + 𝟐𝒚 + 𝒛 = 𝟏𝟎 1
𝟐𝒙 + 𝒚 + 𝟐𝒛 = 𝟏𝟓 2
𝒙 + 𝟐𝒚 + 𝒛 = 𝟏𝟒
3

18
TWO EQUATIONS
2𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 6 1

2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 4 2

Solution :

1 - 2 : 2𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 6
2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 4
𝒚 = 𝟐
Thus,
Substitute y = 2 into 2 𝒙 = 𝟏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒚 = 𝟐

2𝑥 + 2 = 4
2𝑥 = 4 – 2
2𝑥 = 2
2
𝑥=

19
EXERCISE

i. 2𝑥 + 2𝑦 – 3 = 3
5𝑥 – 2𝑦 + 9 = 10

ii. 17𝑥 – 5𝑦 = 34
20𝑥 + 20𝑦 = 40

iii. 2𝑦 + 𝑥 = 8
1 + 𝑦 = 2𝑥

20
Example
Salleh is planning to invest RM30 000 in two projects, x and y. The two projects
will gain an annual income of RM1750., Project x will payback 5% per year while
project y will payback 6% per year due to a higher level of risk involved. How
much money should be invested for each project?

1
The investment : 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 30 000
2
The gain : 0.05𝑥 + 0.06𝑦 = 1 750
1 × 0.05 ∶ 0.05𝑥 + 0.05𝑦 = 1 500 3

2 3 : 0.01𝑦 = 250
250
y=
0.01

= 𝟐𝟓 𝟎𝟎𝟎

21
Substitute 𝑦 = 25000 into equation 1

𝑥 + 𝑦 = 30 000
𝑥 + 25 000 = 30 000
𝑥 = 30 000 – 25 000
= 𝟓 𝟎𝟎𝟎

Thus, Salleh should invest :

RM 5 000 in project x ,
RM25 000 in project y

USE OF EQUATIONS IN BUSINESS

i. Fixed Cost (FC)

• Cost that does not change with an increase or decrease in the amount of
goods or services produced.
• Expenses that have to be paid by a company, independent of any business
activity.

ii. Variable Cost (VC)

• Corporate expenses that varies with production output.
• Cost that vary depending on a company’s production volume. Arise as
production increases and fall as production decreases.

iii. Total cost (TC)

• Total economic cost
• Fixed Cost + Variable Cost
30
Total Revenue = Unit Price x Quantity

TR = p x Q
Total Variable Cost = Variable Cost per Unit x Quantity
TVC = VC x Q
Total Cost = Fixed cost + Total Variable Cost

TC = FC+ TVC
Profit = Total Revenue – Total Cost

P = TR – TC
𝐹𝐶+𝑃
Target Quantity , Q =
𝑝−𝑉𝐶
31
Example
Anne Private Limited produces clothing products. The total variable cost per
unit is RM2.10. If the fixed cost is RM85,000 and the price is RM3.00 per unit,
find the profit of the company if the company wishes to produce 150, 000
unit

Solution:
Profit = Total Revenue – Total Cost
P = pQ – (FC + VC.Q)
= 3(150,000) – (85,000 + 2.1(150,000))
= 450,000 – 85,000 – 315,000
= RM 50, 000
