LESSON 5: Intercultural Communication

Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the learners shall be able to:
1. Enumerate the different communication skills.
2. Identify the steps to effective listening, writing, speaking, and reading.
3. Differentiate the four essential skills.

Culture and Communication

No matter where you are in the world, communication is important. But communicating across
cultures can be pretty hard. And it does not just mean that there's a language barrier, although
that can be an issue. It means that cultures actually have some very different ways of
communicating. Some cultures are informal, some cultures use a whole series of ritual
greetings before having a conversation, and some cultures consider it rude to show up to a
meeting on time.

Culture isn’t only intellectual happenings like arts, festivals, traditional foods, heritages or
literature, but refers to the daily lifestyle of the general population or a group of people or an
individual. It also describes the family life and social life.

Ethnocentrism is the tendency to view other cultures as inferior to one’s own. Having pride in
your culture can be healthy, but history has taught us that having a predisposition to discount
other cultures simply because they are different can be hurtful, damaging, and dangerous.

Intercultural Communication
Intercultural communication is the verbal and nonverbal interaction between people from
different cultural backgrounds. Basically, 'inter-' is a prefix that means 'between' and cultural
means well, from a culture, so intercultural communication is the communication between
cultures. Sometimes, this is used to describe a single person trying to interact in a foreign
environment but more often, it is a two-way street, where people from both cultures are trying
to improve their communication.
