Comparing fossil and bio-based products

Borregaard’s biopolymers
have a 70 % lower CO2
footprint through the overall
life cycle compared to a
synthetic dispersant.

Borregaard’s
biopolymers have a
negative CO2 footprint
during their service life!

Comparison is carried out by the Norwegian Institute for Sustainability Research using life cycle analysis methodology according to the ISO-
standards 14040/44. The model substance used as synthetic dispersant is polycarboxylate.

Microplastics

Microplastics regulation in EU
New regulations and future ban of intentionally added microplastic
(2025) has caused the industry to look for more sustainable and
biodegradable alternatives

Status for lignosulfonates

The EU Commission has just published the microplastics restriction
proposal, polymers that have a solubility greater than 2 g/L are part of
the exclusion criteria. We assume then that the risk of Member States
going against the proposal from RAC/SEAC and the Commission is very
low

21
Lignin Biopolymers – Regulatory status

• Lignosulfonates are completely soluble in

Microplastic

EPA Organic farming water according to OECD 120

• Inert ingredients used pre- and post- • Biobased
harvest exemptions from the • Most lignosulfonates are suitable for
requirement of a tolerance: Subpart D, Organic Farming registered
40 CFR 180.910 formulations
• Inert ingredients applied to animals
exemptions: Subpart D, 40 CFR 180.930

Biodegradability REACH Safety

• Inherent biodegradable according to • as post-reacted natural polymers • Non-toxic
OECD 302B lignosulfonates have been exempted • Non eye irritant
from registration

Greensperse S7 – low foaming, better wettability, superior dispersant

Reduced foaming and faster wettability

Constant air-flow (10 l/h, 120 sec) through a small gas distribution tablet immersed in a graduated flask containing water and
dispersant (200 ml, 10 % w/w solution). Foam formation and foam stability measured as a function of time. Greensperse S7 is a
low foaming product.

Strong adsorption, better dispersing properties

Carbon black is a difficult to disperse non-polar substrate. Greensperse S7 gives rise
to a well dispersed suspension having Newtonian behavior. KL1 gives rise to a
shear-thinning behaviour of the suspension. Rheology measurements performed at
20 °C (Physica MCR 101). 105 g water, 2.5 g dispersant, 25 g carbon black (Cabot
Elftex 460) homogenised for 5 min before measurements.

32
Greensperse®S9 in extruded WG of Thifensulfuron-methyl

Greensperse S9 can provide faster and

more complete WG disintegration,
particularly in the presence of commonly
used fertilizers.

33
Greensperse CA-N as binder for applied granules (GR)

Granules of two different substrates generated by pan

granulation with Greensperse CA-N as binder.

Greensperse CA-N provides several benefits:

 It is suitable for pressurised and non-pressurised agglomeration
processes

Crush strength
 It provides increased strength and durability to the granules
 It is applicable for substrates having highly different surface
properties
 It is a bio-based product that is safe to handle

34
Flonicamid 50% WDG

Variables in experimental setup: five different binders, two type of

fillers, two type of disintegration agents, two type of wetting agents,
amount of water in paste*.

Recipe: 50% Flonicamid, 10% binder, 1% wetting agent, 0-10%

disintegration agent, 29-39% filler

From the data-set on fresh granules it was clear that these variables
are very important:
 Type (quality) of the binder
 Impact of disintegration agent
 Water content in paste

*Fillers: bentonite and kaolin. Disintegration agents: ammonium sulfate and sodium sulfate. Wetting agents: Supragil WP and Morwet EFW

35
Flonicamid 50% WDG, data on fresh granules

 Type of binder: 5 Borregaard products tested, especially binder A showed good performance (also binder C).
 Disintegration agent (ammonium sulphate): compromised attrition in all experiments (in example: 0 % vs. 5 %)
 Water content: needs to be optimized for each (individual) binder. In example: 14,5 g water gave high attrition while
13,5 g water gave poorer attrition (note: both water levels gave fine extrudable paste)

 Increase aqueous phase density
 Aqueous phase with active being water soluble salt (SL + SC type)

High electrolyte concentration during application:

 Formulations with improved compatibility with fertilizers
(tank mix)
 Greensperse S9 and Greensperse SL-8 are dispersants
having high salt tolerance

Further work in biocontrol

We would like to further investigate the

actual UV protection potential of
lignosulfonates.

The scope will be four microorganisms:

 Beauveria bassiana
 Bacillus thuringiensis
 Pseudomonas fluorescens
 Metarhizium anisopliae

A formulation of the microorganism with

and without lignosulfonates will be sprayed
on to a glass surface and left under UV
exposure. The total CFU will be measured
over time.
