I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
Have you tried posting on social media sites wherein you included pictures and added a nice caption?
Well, if you have done that before or if you have been doing that, you already experienced creating and
using simple multimodal texts. When we communicate, we use different communication processes or what
are call modes. Examples of modes are reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing . So, when we
use more than one mode at a time, the text we create or we read are multimodal texts.
What are multimodal texts? Multimodal Texts are texts which use two or more modalities of
communication by variously combining images, words, and sounds toward one overall cohesive
composition. Examples are picture books, text books, graphic novels, comics, and posters, where meaning
is conveyed to the reader through varying combinations of visual (still image) written language, and spatial
modes.
A text may be defined as multimodal when it combines two or more semiotic systems. There are five
semiotic systems in total:
1. Linguistic: comprising aspects such as vocabulary, generic structure and the grammar of oral and
written language
2. Visual: comprising aspects such as color, vectors and viewpoint in still and moving images
3. Audio: comprising aspects such as volume, pitch and rhythm of music and sound effects
4. Gestural: comprising aspects such as movement, speed and stillness in facial expression and body
language
5. Spatial: comprising aspects such as proximity, direction, position of layout and organization of
objects in space.
● a picture book, in which the textual and visual elements are arranged on individual pages that contribute to
an overall set of bound pages
● a web page, in which elements such as sound effects, oral language, written language, music and still or
moving images are combined
● a live ballet performance, in which gesture, music, and space are the main elements
● A poster, conveys meaning through a combination of written language, still image, and spatial design
● In a picture book, the print and image both contribute to the overall telling of the story but do so in different
ways
● A film text is a more complex multimodal text than a poster as it dynamically combines the semiotic
systems of moving image, audio, spoken language, written language, space, and gesture (acting) to convey
meaning.
● Text messages and cards are also examples of multimodal texts.
Types of Multimodal Texts
Multimodality does not necessarily mean use of technology, and multimodal texts can be paper-based,
live, or digital.
1. Paper-based multimodal texts include picture books, text books, graphic novels, comics, and
posters.
2. Live multimodal texts, for example, dance, performance, and oral storytelling, convey meaning
through combinations of various modes such as gestural, spatial, audio, and oral language.
3. Digital multimodal texts include film, animation, slide shows, e-posters, digital stories, podcasts,
and web pages that may include hyperlinks to external pronunciation guides or translations.
A. Below are the features of multimodal text. Underline the word which is/are closely related to the given
feature.
1. Linguistics (oral language, tempo, circular)
2. Visual (horizontal, dark, moderately fast)
3. Audio (happy, melody, yellowish)
4. Gestural (serious, spherical, grammar)
5. Spatial (written language, pitch, direction)
B. Determine the following sentences whether it represents linguistic, visual, audio, gestural or
spatial. Write your answers on the space provided before the numbers.
__________ 3. Mrs. Teresa Enciso was very angry at her Grade 8 students.
__________ 4. St. Bridget School is just a stone away from the Buhi Municipal Office.
__________ 5. Rainbow’s color are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
__________ 6. There are two types of past tense of the verb, namely: regular (ends with d or ed) and
irregular past forms (does not end with d or ed) of the verb.
__________ 7. The arrangement of the chairs inside the classroom is 5 (horizontal) by 8 (vertical).
C. Classify the list of multimodal text if it is paper-based, live or digital. Write your answer in the
blanks.
Example: Digital 1. Videos
__________ 1. Comics
__________ 2. E-books
__________ 3. Text Messages
__________ 4. Emails
__________ 5. Infographics
__________ 6. Books
__________ 7. Cards
__________ 8. Movies
