WHAT IS THE DV-LOTTERY?
The US Diversity Immigration Visa (DV) Lottery (also known as the “Green Card Lottery”) is an official US
government program for immigration to the United States. Those who are issued a Diversity Visa may
legally live, work and study long-term in the USA and even apply for US citizenship after being Permanent
Residents of the United States for at least five years. Approximately 100,000 people from around the
globe are selected as winners of the DV-Lottery each year and then up to 50,000 of the selectees who pass
the Consular Interview process successfully and meet all of the US government requirements are granted
a Diversity Visa to the USA. Thus, your chances of winning the DV-Lottery and moving to the United
States are actually pretty good – if you are eligible and do everything correctly!
In general, to take part in the DV-Lottery, an applicant must have been born in a country that is eligible to
participate. The list of eligible countries is updated each year by the US State Department and is based on
how many people from any given country were issued a Diversity Visa during the past five years. People
who were born in countries that sent over 50,000 immigrants to the United States during the previous
five year timeframe are not eligible to participate in the DV-Lottery (so that individuals born in other
countries may also have a chance to immigrate to the USA). Another requirement for participating in the
US Diversity Visa Program is that an applicant must also have at least a secondary/high school diploma. If
an applicant does not meet the educational requirements, there is an option that may allow them to
participate in the DV-Lottery if they were born in an eligible country and have two years of work
experience during the past five years in an occupation specified by the US government.
Registration for the DV-Lottery occurs during a brief period in the Fall (normally around October). The
actual DV-Lottery takes place early the next year and the results of the Lottery are usually released by the
US State Department between May and July. Winners who are selected in the DV-Lottery have the
opportunity to continue the procedure to receive a US Permanent Resident Green Card.
