BOHOL MATHSHS GENMATH Q1 PLP3DAY2 v.01

This lesson plan teaches students about finding the domain and range of rational functions. It provides examples of determining the domain by identifying values that make the denominator equal to zero. The range is determined by comparing the graph to the y-axis. Students are given exercises to find the domain and range of various rational functions based on their equations or graphs. They are asked to define key terms like intercepts, zeros, and asymptotes.

LESSON PLAN IN GENERAL MATHEMATICS

GRADE: 11 QUARTER: 1 WEEK: 3 DAY: 2

COMPETENCY & Finds the domain and range of a rational function. (M11GM-Ib-5)
:
OBJECTIVES
CONTENT : Domain and Range of a Rational Function
LEARNING SLM Module 3
RESOURCES : GM LM pages 24-25
GM TG pages 54-66
PROCEDURE : A. Preparation

Check the assignment.

B. Motivation
𝑥−1
Consider the rational function 𝑓(𝑥) = .
𝑥+1
a. Can we have a value of f(x) when x = 1?
b. What happens to the value of f(x) when x=0?
c. For what value of x does f(x) become zero?

C. Presentation

Present the learning objectives.

D. Discussion/Abstraction

The domain of a rational function 𝑓(𝑥) is the set of all values of 𝑥

except those that can make the denominator 𝑞(𝑥) equals zero.

The range of a function 𝑓(𝑥) is the set of all values that 𝑓(𝑥) will take.
For a rational function, its range can easily be determined by comparing its
graph to the y-axis while its domain can be determined by comparing the
graph with respect to the x-axis.

𝑥−2
EXAMPLE 1: Find the domain of 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥+2 .
SOLUTION: Observe that the denominator becomes zero at 𝑥 = −2. This
value of x will make the function undefined. Thus, the domain is the set of
all real numbers except
−2 or {𝑥 ≠ −2}.
𝑥+3
EXAMPLE 2: Find the domain of 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 −2𝑥−3 .
𝑥+3
SOLUTION: 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 −2𝑥−3
𝑥+3
𝑓(𝑥) = (𝑥−3)(𝑥+1) (Factor the denominator)
The denominator becomes zero at 𝑥 = 3 and 𝑥 = −1. These values of x
make the function undefined. Thus, the domain is the set of all real
numbers except -1 and 3 or {𝑥 ≠ −1, 3}.
EXAMPLE 3: Give the domain and range of the rational function whose
graph is given at the right.
SOLUTION: The graph breaks
at 𝑥 = 2.
This means the domain is the
set of
all real numbers except 2 or
{𝑥 ≠ 2}.

The graph breaks at 𝑦 = 1,

hence the
range is the set of all real
numbers except
1 or {𝑦 ≠ 1}.
EXAMPLE 5: Give the domain and range of the rational function whose
graph is given at the right.

SOLUTION: The graph breaks

at 𝑥 = −1 and
𝑥 = 1. This means that the
domain is
the set of all real numbers
except -1 and 1
or {𝑥 ≠ −1, 1}.

The graph has no break with

respect to the y-axis, thus
the range is the
set of all real numbers or {𝑦 ∈ 𝑅}.
