Patch Antenna Calculations

This document provides formulas for calculating the dimensions of a patch antenna for a given resonance frequency and substrate material. The width (W) of the patch is calculated based on the resonance frequency and dielectric constant of the substrate. The effective dielectric constant (εeff) takes into account the substrate thickness and dielectric constant. The effective length (Leff) is then calculated from the effective dielectric constant and resonance frequency. The actual length (L) factors in length extensions (ΔL) due to fringing fields at the ends of the patch. Examples are provided to calculate the width, effective dielectric constant, effective length, length extensions, and actual length of a patch antenna for 920MHz resonance frequency on a substrate with dielectric constant of 4
