OVERVIEW
It is very important to be acquainted and familiarized the working environment before starting on
Microsoft Word. But before that, I will orient you on how to open the computer especially for beginners
when it comes to its usage and how each part functions. One must at least know how to use computer
together with the necessary parts including keyboard, mouse, speaker and the like. Once a computer is
successfully opened, what you can see is the Desktop.
For Module 2, it covers the second chapter of the topics that you will be learning which is on the
Getting Started on Computers, divided into three (3) lessons: The Desktop, the Computer Keyboard and
The Mouse. Learning from this module could give you an enough mastery of the necessary information with
regards to how a computer can be actually operated for the maximization of its use.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Specifically, after you finish learning from this module, you are expected to:
Identify the parts of a desktop;
Discuss the function of each part of a desktop;
Define a keyboard;
Identify the parts of a keyboard;
Explain the functions of the parts of a keyboard;
Label the parts of the mouse; and
Create a folder.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It contains a window that is part of the total display area or can be full screen, taking up the total
display area. Users can have multiple desktops for different projects or work environments they have and
can switch between them.
Icon – a small picture that represents an object or program. Icons are very useful in applications
that use windows, because with the click of a mouse button you can shrink an entire window into a
small icon.
Start Button – the start button allows users to access their computer programs or configure
Microsoft windows easily.
Taskbar Button – a taskbar is a bar displayed on a full edge of a GUI desktop that is used to
launch and monitor running applications. Microsoft incorporated a taskbar in Windows 95 and it has
been defining aspect of Microsoft Windows’s graphical user interface ever since.
System Tray – the system tray is located in the Windows Taskbar, usually at the bottom right
corner next to the clock. It contains miniature icons for easy access to system functions such as
antivirus settings, printer, modem, sound volume, battery status, and more.
Wallpaper – (also desktop picture and desktop background) is an image used as a background of a
graphical user interface on a computer screen or mobile communications device.
Mouse Pointer – a mouse pointer is a visible indicator displayed on a computer screen. By moving
the mouse, the computer’s user can move the mouse pointer around the screen. Where the mouse
pointer is located on the screen can determine how and where the user can press a button on the
mouse to input text or execute a command.
Assessment Task 2.1
What among the parts of a desktop is the most important? Justify briefly your response.

The figure that follows is typical computer keyboard. Labeled in the figure are the common parts. In
the figure, the keys are also identified.
ESCAPE KEY – the Escape key is used to close a currently running program. It is found on the upper left
corner of the keyboard.
FUNCTION KEYS – the function keys are used as a shortcut keys in performing a command or function.
They are labeled as F1 and F12.
ALPHANUMERIC KEYS – the alphanumeric keys include the letters of the alphabet, numbers, symbols
and special keys. These special keys are spacebar, backspace, enter key, shift key, and caps lock.
NUMERIC KEYS – the numeric keypad is usually found on the right side of the keyboard. It contains
numbers and the four basic operation symbols. It is normally used for calculation. It is also known as
number keys.
MODIFIER KEYS – these keys are said to be a modifier keys because it does not have special function if
you just press it alone. Any of the modifier key is used with other keys to send command or produce special
character.
DIRECTIONAL ARROWS – the arrow key or directional arrow are used to move the cursor on the screen.
SPECIAL KEYS – the special keys are keys that have an special or specific functions. They are used to
perform commands faster.
A computer mouse is an input device that is used with a computer, moving a mouse along a flat
surface can move the cursor to different items on the screen. Items can be moved or selected by pressing
the mouse buttons (called clicking).
Good job on your activity! Now, let’s start learning more about a computer mouse.
Today's mice have two buttons, the left button and right button, with a scroll wheel in between the
two. Today, many computer mice use wireless technology and have no wire.
There are many types of mouse. Optical mouse, wireless
mouse, mechanical mouse, trackball mouse. A computer mouse is a
handheld hardware input device that controls a cursor in a GUI and
can move and select text, icons, files, and folders. For desktop
computers, the mouse is placed on a flat surface such as a mouse
pad or a desk and is placed in front of your computer.
Today this device is on virtually every computer. The primary function is to move the mouse pointer
on the screen. The mouse pointer can be used for many actions on the computer. Clicking or double
clicking an icon, folder, or other object will open a document or execute the program. Users can also move
an icon, folder, or other object by clicking a mouse button and dragging the object with the mouse pointer.
Pointing to an item on the screen means moving your mouse so the pointer appears to be touching the
item. When you point to something, a small box often appears that describes the item.
On most computers, the user can move the mouse to move the cursor in the same direction. To
choose something that is on the screen, the user can move the cursor to it and "click" the left mouse
button. The right button is used to open menus that are different depending on where the cursor is. The
other mouse buttons can do different things, depending on the software. Most mice have two buttons to
click.
Most mice also have the "scroll wheel"—a small wheel found between the two main mouse buttons.
The user can move the wheel back and forth to "scroll" through things like a website or folder. "Scrolling"
means moving the words or pictures up or down on the screen, so another part of the page comes into
view. The wheel can also be pressed, to click it like another button.
A mouse can also be connected to and used the same way with a laptop computer, but unlike a
desktop computer, one does not have to be connected to use the laptop. This is because along with the
keyboard, laptops have a built-in input device called a trackpad which does the same thing as a mouse.
Similarly, tablet computers have a touchscreen as an input device, but some, like the Microsoft Surface and
those that use Android, also work with mice.
What follows are mouse techniques that you can use for encoding, gaming and other computer use.
These techniques are common and are basics so you must at least know all of these. Try to open up your
laptops or computers and do some practices of these techniques. Enjoy. :)
Mouse Techniques:
POINT – is to move the mouse pointer on the screen
towards your preferred location.
CLICK – is by pressing and releasing or slightly tapping
the left button of the mouse.
DOUBLE CLICK – is to press the left button twice in
quick succession.
DRAG – is to press and hold the left button together
while moving the mouse.
RIGHT CLICK – is simply pressing and holding the
right button of the mouse.
SCROLL WHEEL – is used to navigate the screen from
top to bottom or controlling the vertical scroll
bar without dragging the mouse.
After familiarizing yourself with how the mouse works, you are at least expected to know the parts of
a computer mouse. In doing the activity that follows, try to label the parts of a computer mouse on the
space provided, write brief description of each.
Computer mouse is a vital input device most specially for data encoding and even in gaming or
using software and application. Among also the uses of a mouse is creating folders. This too is a necessary
skill that you must learn and practice.
Creating a Folder
As far as computer is concern Folder is a virtual container within a digital file system, in which
groups of files and other folders can be kept and organized.
NOTE: You can also create a folder the moment when you’re saving a new document.
Feedback
Hi, student! How are you doing so far? Were you able to at least grasp enough from the lessons
and the activities you’ve done in this module basically on what computers are? Where you able to
understand how a keyboard and a mouse works for a computer? Did you enjoy engaging and familiarizing
yourself to the parts of the computers and how it is used for various activities including encoding, software
use, gaming and other use?
You may proceed to the next module if you sincerely recognize and know by yourself that you’ve
understood well the lesson and you’re able to answer successfully the learning and assessment tasks. If
you think that you still need further readings for learning, I suggest you read again the inputs on the
preceding pages and you can also refer to the suggested readings from the references stipulated hereafter.
Summary
For your reference and review, what follows are the highlights of this module. You may take time to
read and reread so you’ll learn further and a lot:
The desktop is the front surface of the computer software. It usually appears on your screen once
you opened it. It just likes a front cover of your book. You can see the start button, taskbar, icons,
mouse pointer, wallpaper and system tray.
