GENERAL
1.1
This Procurement Specification covers non–electrolytic anticorrosive coatings derived from water or
solvent dispersions of zinc and aluminum flakes and following stoving, for ferrous material parts.
Stoving temperatures can vary from about 180°C for solvent–based organic systems, to about 300°C for
water–based inorganic systems.
Topcoat finishing additional treatments can be applied on the base coating to improve the corrosion and
abrasion resistance, to give a particular color and/or to modify the friction coefficient by adding, in this
case, special additives such as wax or PTFE.
1.2
Purpose
Main purpose of the coating dealt with in this Procurement Specification is to give to treated parts a high
resistance to corrosion and to ensure a controlled value of the friction coefficient.
1.3
Field of application
Depending on the type of parts to be treated, non–electrolytic coatings with zinc and aluminum flake base
can be applied following one of these procedures:
– bulk dip / spin;
– rack dip / spin;
– rack spray, bulk (volute) or on pallet.
As a general rule, bulk processes are suitable for small or medium–size parts, while rack processes are
suitable for medium–size or large parts.
For parts with indents – blind holes, socket screw heads, nuts – and/or fine threads, it is necessary to use
systems and working cycles able to avoid product deposits in these areas or to guarantee their removal.

– Self–locking nuts with polyamide core.
– Parts for which a good electrical conductivity is required (e.g. ground connections). THE ONLY VALID REFERENCE IS THE ORIGINAL ITALIAN EDITION
– Only as concerns the coatings obtained by water dispersions, for components made of
materials for which the temperatures of 300°C cause a decay of the mechanical
characteristics.
CONFIDENTIAL
For parts to be used on exposed areas (e.g.: under floor, engine compartment, vehicle exterior),
assembled with stainless steels, magnesium alloys copper alloys, rubber or other elements subject to
create contact corrosion with zinc, it is necessary to use coatings with appropriate additional finishings,
to specify on drawings.
In these cases, it is always advisable to check the suitability of the solution chosen by means of targeted
corrosion tests, to be agreed upon between Customer and Supplier.
1.4
Flexibility and resistance to shocks
The coating must resist normal extensions and compressions required to springs, as well as normal
bending stresses to which elastic washers and flat springs are subject during the assembly, without
showing scaling or loss of adhesion from the base metal.
Moreover, it must resist the normal handling and storage conditions without showing scaling, detach-
ment from the base metal or other important damages.
1.5
Look
Unless otherwise specified on drawings, the coating shall present a uniform semi–opaque silver grey color
(Silver).
A different color can be required (e.g. black), it is usually obtained by applying one or more additional
finishing coats which can affect the thickness of the coating (indicatively greater than 15 mm total), making
it potentially critical for fine metric screw threads.

Dimensions and tolerances of the coated part
1.7.1
Non-threaded elements
1.7.1.1
If not otherwise indicated, dimensions and tolerances indicated on the part drawing are considered as
including the coating.
1.7.2
Coating thickness on bolts
1.7.2.1
When applied on threaded elements, the coating must not affect the normal assembly and dismounting
operations. The measure of the coating thickness is defined as per the tolerance of the ISO metric thread,
according to Standard UNI 5541, with tolerance classes:
– g , f and e for outer threads (screws);
– H and G for inner threads (nuts).
In case of outer threads, these tolerances are considered before applying the coating while, in case of
inner threads, they are considered after coating. After coating, the higher deviation must not exceed zero
(nominal dimension) in case of outer threads and be lower than zero in case of inner threads.
a) Screws The thickness values of coatings for screws are defined in function of thread pitch and
tolerance field of thread. Table 1 shows the maximum theoretical thickness values that

can be required; they are obtained from the values of the main deviations from tolerance

Even thickness values higher or lower than the indicated ones can be required.
Thicknesses higher than the indicated ones must be agreed upon by Purchaser and Supplier, for, in
addition to the main deviation, a part of the thread tolerance could be utilized and a decrease of some
micrometers could occur on the average diameter in position “h/H”; nevertheless, in any case the screw
– nut coupling must not be compromised.
b) Nuts Differently from the electrolytic coatings, the coatings dealt with in this Procurement
Specification tend to accumulate in inner threads too. Therefore the female threads
must be suitably increased in order to ensure the meeting of tolerance 6H after applying
the coating.
2.1
Submit the component to tests and checks indicated in the following paragraphs, checking the compliance
of the test result with the values/limits indicated in the design and/or in the annexed “Specifications Data
Sheet”, concerning the specific type.

2.4
Characteristics
The characteristics indicated below refer to the significant surface of the part.
The term significant surface means the surface part that is essential for the look and/or utilization of the
treated component.
It can be indicated on drawing or agreed upon when ordering; otherwise the whole part surface is
considered to be significant.
In case of bolts, the significant surface includes head and stem of screws, operation slots, possible
inseparable washers and the outer surface of nuts.
2.4.1
Visual inspection
The part surface must be free of defects such as porosity, inclusions, cracks, blisters, drops, etc. and of
zones without coating.
The coating must have a look conforming with what required in § 1.5, it must be catalyzed perfectly, with
a not greasy or sticky hand (for versions LUB too); it must resist normal handling, storage and installation
operations without flaking, scaling or, in any case, losing adhesion.
No accumulation of product that can affect the tightening operations must occur on bolts, on threads and
in operation slots.
2.4.2
Check the absence of hexavalent chromium compounds in the coating composition
As per Standard 7.M5000.
2.4.3
Thickness
2.4.3.1
Coating thickness for components other than bolts and nuts
The minimum local thickness, measured in significant surface zones by one of the methods indicated
below, must result as indicated in § 2.4.3.6, for the various types of coating.
2.4.3.2

2.4.3.5
Bolt coating thickness
CONFIDENTIAL
The coating thickness on threaded elements must not compromise the normal tightening and dismounting
operations.
In the meantime, it must meet the requirements indicated in §§ 2.4.5 to 2.4.7.
Unless otherwise arranged, after coating, metric threaded parts shall be manually screwable on the test
gauges, ring type or thread plug type, with tolerance position “h” for external threads and “H” for internal
threads.
In this case the screwing operation, for the first 3 threads shall be done by exerting a max. torque
complying with values in P.S 9.56205/01 both for screws and for nuts.
2.4.3.5.1
Zones for the measurement of the bolt coating thickness
As a consequence of the variability of the coating thickness on screws and nuts, it is measured in points
significant from the point of view of anticorrosive protection.
In case of hexagonal or outward–torsion, these points lies approximately at the center of the head surface
or of the stem end.
In case of cylindrical screws with countersunk hexagonal head and of screws with cross cut, the
measuring points lies on the flat surface of the head, between edge and countersunk hexagon, between
edge and cross cut, or on the side of the head. Countersunk and cut surfaces are excluded from the
measuring points.
In case of nuts, thickness is measured on a side of the hexagon or on a support plane.
2.4.3.5.2
Coating thickness measurement on bolts and nuts and small items
On a minimum of 10 parts for each homogeneous lot, measure, with the methods described above, the
coating thickness performing at least 4 different measurements for each part.
For each single part the arithmetical mean of measured values shall be within the limits indicated in
§2.4.3.6 as a function of the prescription indicated in the drawings.
Single measurements lower than 40% of the prescribed limit are not allowed.
2.4.3.6
Thickness limits
Thickness values must range within the following limits:
– RIV/EC 5 5 mm
– RIV/EC 5 F 5 mm
– RIV/EC 5 LUB 5 mm
– RIV/EC 8 PL 8 mm
As far as screws are concerned, the max. thickness, measured under the head, shall not exceed 25 mm.
