Discussion Assignment

Hypothetical Situation

I am working on my Windows computer and it seems to be slowing down over time. I am

curious and look at the processes running on my system. I wonder what processes are causing

the system to slow down and wish to end some to fix this issue.

Identifying Unnecessary Processes

To identify unnecessary processes, I can use the Task Manager. To open the Task

Manager, I can press Ctrl+Shift+Esc or right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager

(Williams, 2021).

Once the Task Manager is open, I can click on the Processes tab to see a list of all the

processes running on my system. I can sort the list by CPU usage, memory usage, or other

columns to see which processes are using the most resources (Williams, 2021).

I can also right-click on a process and select Properties to get more information about it,

such as the publisher, description, and file location. This information can help me to identify

which processes are essential and which ones are not.

Disabling Unnecessary Processes

Once I have identified some unnecessary processes, I can disable them to free up

resources and improve system performance. To disable a process, I can right-click on it and

select End task.

It is important to note that I should not disable any processes that I am not sure about.

Disabling essential processes can cause my system to become unstable or crash (Samson,

2019).

Examples of Unnecessary Processes

Some examples of unnecessary processes that I may want to disable include:

 Startup programs: Startup programs are programs that are configured to start

automatically when my computer boots up. Many of these programs are not essential and

can be disabled to improve my computer's startup time and performance (Williams,

2021).

 Background apps: Background apps are apps that continue to run even when I am not

using them. Some of these apps may be necessary, but others may be using resources

unnecessarily. I can disable background apps in the Windows Settings app.

 Unused services: Windows services are programs that run in the background to provide

various features and functionality. However, I may not need all of the services that are

enabled by default. I can disable unused services in the Windows Services app.

Conclusion
By identifying and disabling unnecessary processes, I can improve the speed and

performance of my Windows computer. It is important to note that I should not disable any

processes that I am not sure about. Disabling essential processes can cause my system to

become unstable or crash (Samson, 2019).
