SECTION A
Question no. 1 to 16 are Multiple Choice (MCQ) type questions, carrying 1 mark each. (16x1=16)
2. Choose the options that gives the correct number of pollen grains that will be formed after 525
microspore mother cell undergo microsporogenesis.
a. 525 b. 1050 c. 2100 d. 1575

model of DNA.
a. Rosalind Franklin b. Maurice Wilkins
c. Erwin Chargaff d. Meselson and Stahl
For Question no. 13 to 16, two statements are given – one labelled as Assertion (A) and the
other labelled as Reason (R). Select the correct answer to these questions from the codes (a),
(b), (c) & (d) as given below.
(a) Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true and Reason (R) is the correct explanation of
the Assertion (A)
(b) Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true and R is not the correct explanation of
Assertion (A)
(c) Assertion (A) is True but Reason (R) is false
(d) Assertion (A) is false but Reason (R) is True
13. Assertion (A): In coconut, the water represents the free nucleus endosperm and the white kernel
represents the cellular endosperm.
Reason (R): PEN undergoes a number of free nuclear divisions which are followed by wall formation.
14. Assertion (A): The regions inside the seminiferous tubules contain Leydig cells.
Reason (R): Leydig cells Synthesis and secrete androgens.
15. Assertion (A): In birds, females are heterogametic and males are homogametic.
Reason (R): In birds, females have ZW sex chromosomes and males have ZZ sex chromosomes.
SECTION C
22. (A) List the two methodologies which were involved in Human genome project. Mention how they are
used?
(B) Expand YAC and BAC. Mention what it is used for? (3)
24. (i) Sickle – cell anaemia in human is a result of point mutation. Explain
(ii) Write the genotypes of both the parents, who have produced a sickle – celled anemic offsprings.
(3)
25. A DNA segment has a total of 2000 nucleotides, out of which 520 are adenine containing nucleotides.
How many purine bases this DNA segment possesses? (3)
26. (i) Why are seeds of some grasses called apomictic? Explain.
(ii) State two reasons to convince a farmer to use an apomictic crop. (3)
27. Flowering plants have developed many devices to discourage self – pollination and to encourage
cross – pollination. Explain three such devices. (3)
28. (a) (i) Expand the abbreviations given below, used for different nodes of assisted reproductive
technologies.

your answer.
OR
(b) Differentiate between the following:
i. Perisperm and Pericarp
ii. Syncarpous pistil and Apocarps pistil
iii. Plumule and Radicle
SECTION D
29. Gene expresses itself in a cell system as a protein enzyme. Hoe does an expression of gene occur in a
cell system and when does it need to occur, and how the gene expression is regulated in a prokaryote
cell system was studies by the combined efforts of Jaque Monad, the biochemist and Francois Jacob,
the geneticist. For their work on lactose metabolism in E.coli and introducing the concept of “Lac
operon”. They were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1965
a. Why is lac operon said to be a transcriptionally regulated system? (1)
b. It sis said that the lac operon has to be operational at a very low level in the bacterial
cell all the time. Justify (1/2)
c. Why is the regulator gene in lac operon marked as ‘i' gene? (1/2)
d. Draw a schematic diagram of lac operon in absence of inducer in the culture medium of
the bacteria (2)
OR
Draw a schematic diagram of lac operon in the presence of inducer in the culture medium
of the bacteria. (2)
31. Schematically represent and explain the events of spermatogenesis in human (5)
OR

32. Describe Harshey and Chase’s experiment. Write the conclusion drawn by the scientists after their
experiment.
OR
Explain the process of DNA replication with the help of a schematic diagram. (5)
33. (a) (i) A true breeding tall pea plant with round seeds is crossed with a recessive dwarf pea having
wrinkled seeds. Work out the cross up to F2 generation giving the phenotypic ratios of F1 and F2
generation respectively.

carrying sperm. Why was she advised to undergo MTP? (5)
