Junior league wraps Blackall players ace them at junior up a great season masters

A very successful and enjoyable Blackall Junior Rugby League presentation day was held on Sunday, September 9 with players, families and invited guests. All players in each age group received a trophy and a personalised backpack or football bag and a team photo as well as a photo DVD for each family of the season that was. A number of team awards were presented. Under 11 trophy winners were: best and fairest - Kelly Hauff, most consistent at training Brodie Waine, most consistent player Jake Richardson, coachs encouragement award Kevin Loveday. Under 13 trophy winners: best and fairest - John Hauff, best back Brady Prow, best forward - Jack Politch, most Improved - DJ Kangan, coachs award - Jesse Negus. A great gesture of sportsmanship and comradeship was shown from the Barcaldine Junior Rugby League when it brought grand nal runners-up medals and presented them to our under 13s team on the day. Barcaldine president Gary Bettiens, under 13s coach Dave Kerrigan and two players from their winning team, Todd Gadd and Jarrod Camp travelled over and attended the presentation day. The BJRL hopes to see lots of junior players signing up again next year.

The nals of the West Region Central Zone Junior Masters tennis circuit were played in Longreach last Saturday. Players qualied by competing in at least three of the ve Junior Masters tournaments held in the central west this season. Samuel Fletcher won the 9 and under boys nal. In the 11 and under girls, Madeline Carter was the winner, while William Butler won the boys. 13 and under saw Bridie Carter come in as winner. Results for the Junior Masters circuit, worked out on a points system for placings during the season, are 9 and under girls: winner - Tiffany Mick, runner-up - Keely Bashford; boys: winner Samuel Fletcher. 11 and under girls: winner Emma Donald, runner-up Hannah Murphy; boys: winner Michael Hooper, runner-up William Butler. 13 and under girls: winner Madeline Carter, runner-up Sara Graham; boys: winner Brady Stolz, runner-up Liam Douglas. 15 and under girls: winner Bridie Carter, runner-up Lucy Walsh; boys: winner Jake Stolz, runner-up Sam Murphy. Two girls and two boys for each age group from 11 & under up have now qualied to play in the Junior Masters state nals held in Rockhampton on October 27 & 28. Madeline Carter will be playing in the girls 11 and under nal, along with Bridie Carter in the 13 and under girls nal, and William Butler in the 11 and under boys nal.

Lack of fuel delays RFDS retrievals

THE removal of the jet fuel supply from Blackall airport is putting patient safety at risk, according to correspondence tabled at Blackall Shire Councils meeting last week. Air BP removed its refuelling truck from town on April 30 and the result has been logistical problems and time delays for the Royal Flying Doctor Service needing to evacuate patients for urgent medical treatment. According to the correspondence the lack of jet fuel at Blackall has led the RFDS to waste valuable time refuelling at other airports and resulted in a deterioration of services to the Blackall community. A report from one pilot attempting to evacuate a seriously ill resident in early August said the conditions he faced rendered the task close to impossible. He was faced with a night retrieval, where fog had been forecast at eastern seaboard airports as well as strong westerly winds at most levels and no fuel supplies available

at Emerald. The pilot estimated he would not arrive in Blackall until well after midnight and he would have minimum fuel on landing. He asked whether it would be possible to delay the ight a few hours until daylight when there would not be the problems with night ying in fog. The reply was the doctor at Blackall wants this patient own out. If after all that effort we ended up in Emerald at a medical facility no better than Blackall, we would have achieved nothing and may have put the patient at greater risk, the pilots report said. Brisbane and Toowoomba may have been the only fog free places suitable for the patient. As it was the retrieval was handed over to a different section and the patient was own out of Blackall on a plane staffed by a nurse only, rather than the nurse and doctor that had been requested. Phyllis (Dolly) Stephenson was born 27th August 1907 in Gulgong NSW. When she reached 14 years, her family moved to Queensland where her father, Harry Whiteld, managed Cheero Downs outside Tambo. Subsequently, the family moved to Blackall and Harry bought Helensvale at Yalleroi. Dolly married Stan Stephenson on 29 May 1926. The couple had two children, Delma and Robert. Delma lives in Brisbane and Robert in Perth. A luncheon was held in Blackall to celebrate her century on the day of her birthday. Many friends and relatives attended, including her surviving siblings Isabel, Beryl, Eric, and Erics wife Lucy, as continued on page 6 well as Dollys sister in law Mag.

On September 1, Sara-Jane Russell, daughter of Frank and Shirley Russell of Eastcott Park Blackall married Ben Howell at St. James Church in Toowoomba which was followed by a reception at the Burke and Wills Hotel. Sara-Jane was attended by her sister Kerrie-Lyn Russell and friend Kerri Lee, while her neice Catelyn Russell and Gracie Dolinski were ower girls. Gordon Walker was bestman for Ben and Nicholas Brady was groomsman.

On a recent Friday night I had a sudden collapse at home. Within ve minutes of my wife phoning for help I had two doctors, Dr Joshi and Dr Gandhi at my bedside, where they worked on me for an hour to stabilize my condition sufciently to move me by Queensland Ambulance to the Blackall Hospital. While the two ambulance bearers were loading me on the stretcher and into the ambulance, the two doctors went up to the hospital where they were waiting for me when I arrived. Dr Joshi admitted me straight into intensive care, where he and Dr Gandhi worked on me for another three hours to further stabilize my condition. They then left me in the care of the excellent care of the Blackall Hospital nursing staff, with my own personal nurse never very far from my bedside. After 24 hours of this attention, they had stabilized my condition sufciently to be able to y me to Brisbane with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, a trip that only took one-and-a-half hours, where I was transferred to the Prince Charles Hospital. This is a truly excellent service that Queensland Health offers to all Blackall residents. We should all take great comfort that this service is available to us all, if we need it. I believe that it an even better service than city dwellers receive. And I just want to say a big thank you. Graham K Gibson

29-year-old Tim Ludgate to its livestock/real estate department. Tim grew up on a dairy farm at Pittsworth and attended Ag College in Dalby, graduating in 2000 with a Diploma of Agriculture. He went to work as a stationhand at Jimbour Station for four years, and then managed Mixhill Charolais and Charbray stud at Dalby before joining the GDL branch there. Tim transferred from the Dalby ofce and started work in Blackall at the beginning of September.

Terrick ram sale brought forward

The 2007 Terrick Merinos open day and ram auction will be held a week earlier than usual this year, on September 26. The stud will offer 100 rams at the on-property sale at Amaroo, south of Blackall, and potential buyers can check out the catalogue on the Terrick Merinos website 48 hours before the sale. Stud owner Rick Keogh said all rams would have current gures and be benchmarked with Estimated Breeding Values. Two of the studs clients have recorded good results with the bloodline in the past year, including the Wood family at Koondoo, who won the supreme pen of wethers at the Barcoo Pastoral Societys wether trial. In the highest priced eece they were placed rst, second and third and their 2005 drop teams came second and third in that group. The Banks family at Duneira had an excellent shearing last year with their unclassed two tooth ewes cutting 7 kilograms of 21 micron wool, Rick added. This is an excellent result for Dick, Annette, Paul and Kylie who have been Terrick clients for over 40 years. Earlier this year Terrick Merinos sold nine bales of wool in Newcastle, receiving some very positive feedback on how the wool presented. It is interesting to note that the rest of the 2005 drop ewes still averaged 19.3 microns and had readings not dissimilar to the special line that was taken off, Rick said. Blackall Garden Blitzed

On September 6 and 7 a team of enthusiastic Desert Channel Queensland staff descended on Veronica and Ross Drivers garden as part of a $10 000 makeover they won by entering a DCQ competition. Equipped with a plan, garden tools, paintbrushes and a lot of energy, DCQ set about adding to Veronicas already well-established cottage garden. While this was taking place, Veronica and a friend were treated to a trip away to Brisbane. They took in the show Miss Saigon and dined out in style. Back at home a dry creek bed was dug, arbours were constructed, and a conversation pit was paved. Veronicas art studio was given a fresh coat of paint while Ross added his carpentry skills and nished off railings and steps to the studio. A few nal touches with new plantings and an irrigation system completed the two days of hard but enjoyable work. Veronica won the garden makeover when she attended the garden workshop held in May as part of the Blackall Heartland Festival. DCQ, the body charged by the community and government with ensuring a sustainable social, economic and environmental future for the Queensland section of the Lake Eyre Basin, presented numerous sessions at the workshop and offered the chance to enter the competition to all who participated. Veronica and Ross are opening their garden on Saturday, September 22 from 10 am to 2 pm.

The project, an initiative of Leading Sheep, DPI, the Australian Agricultural College and the Australian Merino Sire Evaluation Association, will give producers a chance to see how different genetics perform in an arid environment. Rick said all other evaluation sites are in improved country so this was an important step for rangelands producers. Everyone is welcome to attend the on-property sale where there will be smoko, lunch and drinks provided on the day. There will be displays of current sires, stud ewes and the current drop of AI lambs.

Blackall Combined Agents offered 3700 quality weaner and store cattle at the biannual sale on September 13. Cattle were drawn from Hughenden, Winton, Aramac, Jericho and the local Blackall district. Once again the sale was strongly supported by regular vendors to this special sale. There were 2400 steers offered, with a line of 385 Charolais cross Santa steers from Bailey Properties, Paradise Downs, Blackall which sold to a top of 226.2 c/kg with the heavy end of the draft making up to 212 c/kg for 337 kg to return $714. Peel Pastoral from Northampton Downs, Blackall sold a line of 160 Santa steers with the tops selling to $226 c/kg, averaging 297 kg for $223 c/kg to return $665. Arbie and Josie Smith, Shady Downs, Tambo sold a line of 77 Steers for a top of $225 c/kg for 257 kg to return $603 p/hd. Young weaner steers from Butch and Hazel Howard, Jericho sold well with a line of 95 Droughtmaster cross steers selling for $226 c/kg

Blackall Combined Agents yarded a total of 896 head of cattle at their September 6 sale, with the market being very strong again for all descriptions. The best of the heavy steers made $175.2 c/kg to average $172 c/kg. Hereford/Charolais cross steers from Bill and Heather Wehl, Homebush sold for $170.2 c/kg to weigh 492 kg for $838/hd. Feeder steers from Aramac topped at $189.2 c/kg for 358 kg and $677/hd. Weaner steers from Bill and Heather Wehl topped at $223.2 c/kg for 218 kg or $487/hd. Heavy trade Charolais cross heifers from Nugent Past Co, Tambo Station, Tambo sold for $159.2 c/kg to weigh 465 kg for $740/hd. Brahman feeder heifers from Barcaldine sold for $162.2 c/kg for 312kg.

The heifer market was a little easier than the steer market with heifers from Bailey Properties selling 278 Charolais cross heifers for $170 c/kg average for 259 kg to return $441. The best of the heifers on the day sold for $161 c/kg from Adams & Son, Darracourt, Blackall for 369 kg to return $595. Cows and calves were in limited numbers on offer with 41 x 41 Hereford/Belmont Reds from McCarthy Grazing, Hughenden sold for $620 unit. The sale was such a success due to strong buyer support from Emerald, Springsure, Tambo, Moura, Meandarra and Dalby with a special mention to Simstock Rural Agencies, Longreach who purchased 860 steers. The Newforce Livestock Team bought 370 head as well. The next Blackall cattle sale is set down for Thursday, September 27.

The World Youth Day Cross and religious Icon of the Virgin Mary visited Blackall on Friday, September 7 as part of its journey throughout Australia. The religious cross is on a national tour in the lead up to World Youth Day in Sydney next year. The cross was welcomed at Banks Park at 8am and a barbecue breakfast followed. Father Chris Ryan, the priest travelling with the cross around Australia, spoke of the many people all over the world who have touched the cross during its many pilgrimages. The cross and icon were given to the youth of the world by Pope John Paul II, and were carried in procession to St Patricks Church with young and old alike being given the opportunity to help carry the cross on this brief pilgrimage. It was enshrined at the front of the church and mass was celebrated by Father Chris with enthusiastic and creative support from the students of St Josephs School.

ICPA delegates knocking on doors

Queensland Governor Quentin Bryce urged Isolated Childrens Parents Association members to lodge their feet rmly in the door and march straight on through when she opened the state conference at Tambo last week. Conference organisers adopted the theme of Keeping the Door Open for the 36th annual conference and Ms Bryce said the groups lobbying efforts over the years had brought huge respect that was the key to opening doors. Some things are still very hard but you have wisdom and supporters now, she told delegates. Stafng needs and workloads within small schools around the state were high on the conference agenda, with Clarke Creek delegate Lynise Conaghan putting forward a number of motions. She requested that teacherstudent ratios in rural and remote schools with single classes representing most primary year levels reect the demands of younger students on teacher time. Hospital patients are allocated nursing time according to dependency. Similarly, students should be weighted according to their demand on teacher time, she said. Assistant Director General Gary Barnes told conference that his department would begin a new round of enterprise bargaining with the Queensland Teachers Union by the middle of next year. Ms Conaghan said her son in year ve was being taught nearly every day by a teacher aide, which she described as just unacceptable. Parents are sending their children away because theyre not getting enough attention in the classroom. Teachers are either in the ofce dealing with admin or working with the littlies. Our children cant wait another six months. Fears surrounding council amalgamations were reected in conference motions, which sought assurance from the government that early childhood centres currently being nancially supported by shire councils will remain open and not face a reduction in hours when they amalgamate with larger shires that dont provide assistance to centres. We are concerned that this may be the end of our centre that we have fought long and hard to establish, said Alpha delegate Kristy Sparrow. The loss of our centre would mean no child care or kindergarten for our small town and no early learning opportunities for our young residents. Ultimately the lack of services will mean families moving from our area, something we cannot afford to see occur. Yaraka-Isisford branch observer Mary Killeen questioned the future for the troop carrier which the current Isisford shire is responsible for. What happens when the time comes to replace the one looked after by the Isisford Shire Council after it amalgamates with Longreach, she said. As well as a mooted reduction in

education related services, Tambo delegate Heather Turnbull brought up the downstream impact to schools from council jobs being sacriced. Families will leave the shire and the school and we are concerned about the impact this could have on teacher ratios, she said. Delegates called for Queenslands distance education curriculum to be better resourced and fast-tracked to satisfy current curriculum standards. Speakers pointed out that some papers were produced in the 1990s and were now 15 years old. While distance education teachers were welcoming the opportunity to develop papers, conference heard that many were feeling under pressure due to a lack of money and resources. Education Queenslands Gary Kirby told the conference that two consultative groups were advising on paper development. Conference attendees were treated to a number of entertaining speakers during the two days, including OBE Beefs business development manager Dalene Brook, Morven State School principal Linda Hall, and Education Queenslands director of Behaviour Support, Student Services Division in central ofce, Ray Ashford. Springsures Peggy Smith has joined state council while Vonda Kimber from Alpha has stepped down.

Do you need a new pair of sports shoes??

By participating in The Great Pedometer Challenge, Blackall residents will have the opportunity to win a new pair of sports shoes. The challenge will run for three months, starting on Sunday, September 23, with winners being announced at the Christmas Eve mardi gras. By registering at 60+ Better or at the fun run/ walk this Sunday, participants will receive their free pedometer and be able to log the number of steps they take each day for an eight week period. Pedometer Challenge organiser Sue Swanson said that in Australia, 8000 deaths per year were attributable to physical inactivity, the second most prevalent cause of death (tobacco is rst). More than 60 per cent of Australian males and 70 per cent of Australian females are not physically active enough to gain health benets, she said. Technology reduces our level of physical activity, so we need to nd ways to bring activity back in to our daily life. We need to think of movement as essential for our health rather than time-wasting and inconvenient. Sue said that everyone leads busy lives nowadays but physical activity could be broken down into three lots of ten minutes of moderate-intensity activity each day. Kids need to do more physical activity than adults - they need at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each day, she said. As well as Sue, Lisa Kings and 60+ Better have further information on the pedometer challenge and how people can improve their health and wellbeing and win a new pair of sports shoes into the bargain.

The best way to service the community is to have fuel

Blackall is a major issue. As one pilot put it, it seems to me to be a selsh and heartless act by Air BP a major sponsor of the RFDS. With the summer storm season approaching, the RFDS may be placed in a position where it cannot attend to a patient and loss of life could result. A Blackall GP conrmed that delays were being experienced in getting patients sent out. They have to go here and there to get things done, he said. He pointed out that local medical staff liked to stabilise patients before putting them on the plane, but agreed that a life-threatening situation could arise if an acutely ill person had to remain in Blackall for a number of hours. RFDS chief executive ofcer Nino De Marco said he wouldnt like to say that lives were at risk but said the best way to service the community was to have fuel in Blackall. We are aiming to get the community and all stakeholders together to see if we can nd some solution to the issue, he said. It is hard to know what the best solution is we will need to compare costs and sit round the table with Air BP, QantasLink and the council. The Blackall GP said pressure should be brought on Air BP to reinstate its service. It is purely a commercial decision and people shouldnt be marginalised for where they live, he said. Air BP has stated that the decision to remove the refuelling truck from Blackall was based on minimising health and safety risks to employees and was not done for nancial reasons. A quote obtained by the RFDS for establishing a jet fuel depot at Blackall found it would cost around $20,000 and has asked the Blackall shire to bear the cost as well as take on the responsibility and maintenance for the fuel tank and fuel. Deputy mayor Alan Lane said the request would be held over

Beautiful blooms created an ideal setting for the Blackall Hospital Auxiliarys 39th Springtime Affair in the hospital grounds last Saturday. Spokesman Beth ONeill said the colourful atmosphere and the happy crowd had contributed to a healthy nancial taking for the group, although no nancial tally was available as yet. Its lovely to see so many community groups coming together to support the event and help out their local hospital, she said. District health manager Jill Koeneman opened the Springtime Affair. Bonnie Lawrence was given the title of Miss Springtime this year and the Mother and Child prize went to Priscilla and Gemma Jones. The younger age groups had fun donning costumes for fancy dress this year as well.

A recent LOTE trial feedback at the Blackall State School has shown that many students would like to learn another language at school or investigate the culture of another country. Students preferences were from German to Japanese and then French whereas teacher preference was for French then Japanese, with learning happening in years 4 to 7. *** The year 3/5/7 and QCS Prac test have been completed at BSS and the results will be made known later this year. These will be made available to all parents of those students who participated in the tests. *** Jump Rope for Heart at the state school raised $635.35 this year. Class winners were P/1 Bridget Dendle ($121.40), 2/3 Jesse Miller ($130.15), 4/5 Terana Smith ($89.00), and 6/7 Amy Blucher ($153.00). *** BSS student Bradley Hayes has been selected to the North West athletics trials for discus. *** BSS has been successful in its application for a federal Investing in our Schools grant. The school will receive $87,000 for projects which will include new furniture for the library, an upgrade of the new tness centre (old preschool), and an extension of the current administration building to include two more ofces and a sick bay. *** Seven BSS year 11 & 12 students travelled to Idalia National Park for an ecology camp on August 14 & 15. The study of the adaptations of plants and animals in the park and investigation of different types of plant communities were among the many projects undertaken. Students identied a range of macropods during a spotlighting tour, including the endangered Bridled Nail-tailed Wallaby, and enjoyed some early morning bird watching. *** National Science Week (August 20 26) saw BSS students participate in a range of science activities. Junior school students attended a Science Extravaganza organised by the Yr 11/12 biology class while middle school students became forensic scientists and investigated the case of Who Killed Dot the Cleaner? Senior school students attended an information session on Not all Scientists Wear a White Coat. They were also introduced to two new and exciting branches of science, nanotechnology and biotechnology. *** BSS Year 9 students Robyn Leek, Justin Johnstone, Jack Flynn, Whylie Wilson, and Emily Parker were fortunate to be able to attend the Townsville Careers Expo recently. New recruits look likely for the future! *** Students from St Josephs caught Cartoonitis disease recently when visited by Cartoonist Brian Doyle. The students enjoyed a fun-lled two days learning all about cartooning and drawing. *** On a more serious note St Josephs students learnt about spinal awareness when Wayne Leo visited. Wayne showed the students a skeleton teaching the students parts of the spine and then with his computer friend Alex he showed the students various situations where they might put themselves at risk of being injured. *** LSODE encouragement awards recently went to Chelsea Just and Hilary Wood for an outstanding MC effort at the recent Year 7 dinner, and to Holly Sprague for her consistent enthusiasm, dedication and maturity to ensure the thorough completion of her work. *** Chelsea Just won a copy of the DVD March of the Penguins for her National Book Week entry, one of the many on display at the LSODE penguin parade, which is thoroughly enjoyed by the tourists who visit the school each day. *** LSODE students recently took part in a nationwide Numeracy Week activity to investigate if it was Kyle to William possibleandwork out how tall someone is from the size of their foot. Results from the 474 schools and over 73 000 people that took part found that people with bigger feet tend to be taller. They also discovered that females generally have smaller feet than males, and the number of foot lengths that t into a persons height seems to be larger for people with smaller feet than it is for people with larger feet. *** Steven and Annette Gillies took out rst prize in the LSODE footy tipping competition, landing themselves a cash prize and a football signed by Darren Lockyer. On August 14th and 15th seven of our year 11 and 12 Biology students headed out to Idalia National Park for their ecology camp. Coalition Government invests over $4.5 million in local schools

Blackall State School and Tambo State School have both been successful in applications for funding under Round 4 of the Investing in Our Schools program. Blackall State School will receive $87,546 for small scale extensions while Tambo State School receives $75,790 for oor coverings and ICT facilities. Federal Member for Maranoa, Bruce Scott announced 82 State Government Schools in the electorate of Maranoa will share in over $4.5 million of Coalition Government grants. Mr Scott said students and staff would benet from grants totalling $4,558,825 which would be used for a variety of projects such as improvements, upgrades, refurbishments to the school and the learning environment. The Investing in Our Schools program has been running since 2005 and has proven highly successful, as it delivers much needed funding for projects in local schools, Mr Scott said. It is especially signicant because school communities are able to identify their most critical projects, whether it is air conditioning in classrooms

or purchasing new musical equipment. Each of these projects will benet the present and future students and staff with improved learning environments, better sporting facilities, or upgraded administration buildings. The aim of the program is to also relieve some of the pressure on the school and parents to raise the funds to nance these important projects. This program is another example of how the National/Liberal Coalition Government is committed to assisting schools to maximise the opportunities for young Australians. This assistance has only been made possible due to our strong economic management. Round 4 was meant to be the nal round of this program, however, due to its popularity in delivering nancial assistance directly to the school for projects they deem most crucial, the National/Liberal Government will extend the program.

The provision of early education and child care in Blackall is changing. The Blackall Kindergarten and Limited Hours Daycare Centre is in the process of applying to become part of the C&K group. C&K, known previously as the Creche and Kindergarten Association of Queensland, is a not for prot organisation and is the largest and longest established provider of community based early education and care services in Queensland. C&K is considered the peak body for early childhood education and care in Queensland. Parents and interested community members were invited to a meeting on Thursday, September 13, to vote on whether or not an application should be made to transfer management of the Centre to C&K. It was a unanimous vote by all who attended to get this process underway. This decision has been given careful consideration by the staff, committee and parents of the Centre. The Centre is currently an incorporated body, run by a committee with members usually

The Blackall horse racing community, along with the rest of western Queensland, is breathing a sigh of relief with the announcement that the state has been divided into red and green quarantine zones, which will allow a scheduled race meeting to go ahead in Longreach this Saturday. Barcoo Amateur Race Club secretary Kylie Banks said Blackall had been attempting to gain permission to stage a race meeting with local horses this weekend to distribute some prize money to the racing fraternity adversely affected by equine inuenza quarantine restrictions. That was scrapped when Queenslands Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries announced they were reconsidering quarantine options to bring relief to racing and livestock industries in western and southern parts of the state. On Wednesday afternoon it was announced that horse movements would be permitted within designated green zones, with the central west falling into this category. People wishing to move horses by oat in the zone are now required to ll in a waybill prior to any horse movement. One person happy that the movement of horses is allowed within the green zone is Blackall owner and trainer Charlie Prow. We havent raced for a month and the horses are getting sick of it, he said. Blackall trainers have been able to use the local track to continue working their horses but Charlie said they were getting bored with just going round and round. They like to have a start every now and then. Charlie is training 16 horses from his own stable at the moment and ve from Kevin Birses stable in Longreach. Together with a couple of other local trainers, we were looking at raking up about 25 horses to do something here this weekend, he said.
