End Semester Examination (21st April, 2021)
Time: 1.5 Hr Max. Marks: 35
Assume missing data, if any

1. A cylindrical pressure vessel of shell thickness 20 mm is provided with a nozzle of inner

diameter 250 mm and thickness 15 mm. The inner extension of nozzle is 15 mm. The
other data is given in the Table below.
Determine whether a reinforcing pad is required for the opening and if required find the
dimension of the pad. 12
For ODD Roll No. For EVEN Roll No.
Design pressure (MPa) 2.5 2.75
Inside diameter of shell (mm) 1500 1600
Yield stress of material (N/mm2) 200 220
Welding efficiency 0.85 0.9
Factor of safety 1.5 1.4
Corrosion allowance (mm) 2 3
Pad thickness (mm) 15 12

2. A cylindrical pressure vessel is to be provided with a loose type flange. The outside
diameter of the shell is 80 cm, shell thickness is 10 mm. the design pressure is 10 kg/cm2.
An asbestos gasket of following specifications is used:
Inside diameter of gasket = 84 cm
Gasket width = 1.6 cm
Gasket factor, m = 2.75
Gasket seating stress = 260 kg/cm2

32 bolts of 19 mm diameter are to be used to tighten the flange joint.

Permissible stress for the bolt material and flange material = 950 kg/cm2

Calculate the minimum thickness of the flange. Also, check for the minimum gasket
width. 10+2=12

Consider the following formulas:

Basic gasket seating width, b0 = (Gasket width) / 2
Effective gasket seating width, b = 0.5 (b0)0.5
Diameter of gasket load reaction, G = Inside diameter of gasket + 2 × Gasket width – 2 ×
effective gasket seating width (b)

Bolt circle diameter, B = outside diameter of gasket + 2 × bolt diameter + 12

3. A vertical thin cylindrical pressure vessel having 1.8 m inner diameter and shell
thickness 12 mm is provided with hemispherical heads at both ends. Tangent to tangent
length of the vessel is 10.5 m. The vessel is filled to X % of its capacity by a liquid of
density 800 kg/m3. Calculate the total weight of the vessel and net longitudinal stress in
the cylindrical shell above and below the support which is at the lower head to shell
junction. 11

Permissible stress for the vessel material = 1040 kg/m2

Density of the material = 7800 kg/m3
j = 0.85
X = 65 for ODD Roll number
= 75 for EVEN Roll number
