Beam Deflection - MA

The document describes an experiment to determine the relationship between applied load and deflection on a simply supported beam. The objectives, apparatus, theory, procedure, experimental data, graphs, and results are presented. Key findings include that deflection increases closer to the applied load but the rate of change decreases, and the theoretical and experimental deflection values did not match perfectly due to errors in the beam and measurement devices.

Beam Deflection

Objectives:
 To determine the relationship between applied load and deflection on the simply supported
beam.

 To compare the theoretical and experimental results

 To draw a graph showing the deflection.

Apparatus Used:
 Beam Deflection Apparatus

 Load Hanger

 Vernier Caliper

 Loads

 Deflection Guage

Theory
Simply supported beam like in this experiment is one which is resting on two hinge supports placed at
the ends of the beam. These supports resists both vertical and horizontal forces. On the other hand
cantilever beam is one which is fixed from one side and free to move on the other side.
Formula Used

Procedure
 First, we took a beam and placed it on the supports which are 900mm apart.

 Then we placed a certain amount of load with the help of hangar at a certain distance measured
from the left-hand side.

 Then we used a deflection gauge to measure the beam deflection from its original position at
different points starting from the left-hand side.

 After taking ten readings on a certain amount of weight we increased the weight in the hangar
and repeated the deflection measurement for it.

Results and conclusions

As we can see that as we go close to the load the total deflection increases but the delta change in
deflection between points start to decrease as the slope of the deflection decreases. As we can see there
are errors in the calculations these errors are there due to the following reasons:

 The beam was faulty already bent from multiple positions causing huge difference in
experimental and theoretical value.
 The Deflection gauge was faulty which led to false readings.

At the end we an conclude that as we go close to the load the f=deflection increases but it is not
necessary that maximum deflection should always be at the load application point.
