Activity

Group Activity

Procedure:

●Group the students into two.

●Each group will answer the same given problem.

●The group will discuss within them on how to get the answer.

●The group will write their answers on a manila paper provided.

●After 3 minutes, the respective groups will paste their answers on the board for checking.

Problem:

The following pictures show the updated prices of fruits per kilo in Nanay Belen’s Store
1. Arranged the set of prices in ascending order.

2. Find the average of the data.

3. Encircle the middle price.

4. Underline the price that appears most frequently.

a. What did you do in our activity this morning?

b. How did you get the average?

c. And what is the average in the problem?

d. What price appears to be in the middle?

e. What price frequently appears?

Abstraction

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:

-To define mean, median, and mode.

-To be able to find the mean, median, and mode of a statistical data.

-Show appreciation to the value of mean, median, and mode in real life.

Measures of central tendency- (Measure of centre or central location) is a summary measure that
attempts to describe a whole set of data with a single value that represents the middle or center of its
distribution. (In short, these is the measure that tells where the center of a data set is located)
Mean- The mean is the most commonly used measure of central tendency. It is used to describe a set of
data where the measures cluster or concentrate at a point. It is found by adding the values ofthe data
and dividing by the total number of values. (When we speak of average, we always refer to the mean.

Formula for the mean:

Where:

= the summation of x or (the sum of all the data)

= total number of the values of x

Example 1: Six friends in biology class receive test grades of 92, 84, 65, 76, 88, and 90. Find the mean of
these test scores.

So, from the formula given, let us now try to analyze and then substitute the given values to the given
formula.

Solution:

Hence, the mean score of the six friends is 82.5.

Example 2: The ages of the five contestants in a Statistic Quiz Bee are the following: 18, 17, 18, 19, and
18. Find their average age.

Solution:

Therefore, the mean age of the five contestants in a Statistic Quiz Bee is equal to 18.

Median- The median, denoted by Md, is the middle value of the sample when the data are arranged in
ascending or descending order. The median will be either a specific value or will fall between two values.

Median for odd sample:

The median is in the middle number when the data are arranged in order.

Median for Even sample:

When there are even samples, the median is the mean of the two-middle number

Example 1: The number of books borrowed in the library from Monday to Friday last week were 58,60,
54, 35, and 97 respectively. Find the median.

Solution: Arrange the number of books in ascending or descending order. Then find the middle value.

35, 54, 58, 60, 97

Since we have an odd sample, the middle value which is 58, it is the median of the data set.

Example 2: Francine’s quizzes for the second quarter are 8, 7, 6, 10, 9, 9, 5, 6, 10, and 7. Find the
median.

Solution: Arrange the scores in ascending or descending order. Then find the middle value.
5, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10

Since the middle point falls halfway between 7 and 8, in order to get the median, we need to get the
mean of these two values.

Mode- The mode is the measure or value which occurs most frequently in a set of data. It is the value
with the greatest frequency. A data can have more than one or none at all.

To find the mode for a set of data, we are to consider the following:

1. Select the measure that appears most often in the set.

2. If two or more measures appear the same number of times, then each of these values is amode.

3. If every measure appears the same number, then the set of data has no mode.

Types of Mode

●No mode- A data having equal frequency of observations.

●Unimodal- If the data set has only one value that occurs most often.

●Bimodal- A data set that has two values that occur with the same greatest frequency.

●Trimodal- a data set that has three values that occur with the same greatest frequency.

●Multimodal- When a set of data has more than three values that occur with the same greatest
frequency.

Example 1: Find the mode of the following data:

76, 81, 79, 80, 78, 83, 77, 79, 82, 75

Arrange the number into ascending or descending order.

We have: 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83

In the above data set, the number 79 appears twice, but all other numbers appear only once. Since 79
appears with the greatest frequency, it is the mode of the data values.

Answer:Mode= 79 (unimodal)

Example 2: The ages of 12 randomly selected customers of Café 8020 are listed below:

23, 21, 29, 24, 31, 21, 27, 23, 24, 32, 33, 19

What is the mode of the following ages?

Arrange the number into ascending or descending order.

We have: 19, 21, 21, 23, 23, 24, 24, 27, 29, 31, 32, 33

In the above data set, the number 21, 23, and 24 appears twice. Since these three appear with the
greatest frequency, then it is the mode of the data values.
Answer: Mode= 21, 23, and 24 (trimodal)

Application

Group Activity

Direction: Perform the assigned task. Collect data from your groupmates and ask the following questions
and record the data. Do these in 5 minutes.

Group 1:

Collect and write the shoe sizes of your groupmates.

1. Arrange the numbers in ascending order.

2. Find the mean, median, and mode.3.

Group 2:

Collect and write the weight of your groupmates.

1. Arrange the numbers in ascending order.

2. Find the mean, median, and mode.

Assessment

Individual Activity

Test II

As a student, why do you think your knowledge in finding the mean, median, and the mode is
important? Identify a real-life scenario wherein youcan relate your knowledge about the mean, median,
and mode. Write your answers into 3-5 sentences.

Direction: Analyze the situation and answer the questions that follow. Make the necessary justification if
possible.

4 200.

a. Compute for the mean, median, and the mode.

b. If negotiations for new salaries are to be proposed, and you represent the management, which
measure of central tendency will be use in the negotiation? Explain your answer.

c. If you represent the labor union, which measure of central tendency will you use in the negotiation?
Explain your answer.
