Speed Control of The DC Motor

This document summarizes a student group project on controlling the speed of a DC motor using an N-channel MOSFET. The group members and their student IDs are listed. The project involved using a MOSFET to vary the gate-source voltage and control motor speed. Tests were conducted at different potentiometer positions, demonstrating variable speed control. The results showed the MOSFET provided smooth and precise speed control while being an efficient method.

INTRODUCTION - SPEED CONTROL OF DC MOTOR

 A DC motor is defined as a class of electrical motors that convert

direct current electrical energy into mechanical energy.
 Speed control is the intentional adjustment of the drive speed of a DC
motor.
 The motor speed can be controlled manually or through an automatic
device.
 Speed control is different from speed regulation, which involves
maintaining a constant speed despite changes in load.
WHY SPEED CONTROL IS IMPORTANT?

DC motors require precise speed control in various applications.

Precise control of motor speed is essential for achieving accuracy and consistency in many
applications.
By controlling the motor speed, the application can operate more efficiently.

Controlling the motor enables the application to operate at different load.

Motor speed control can increase safety and save operating cost.

METHODOLOGY
IRF540N was chosen for its higher current and power handling capacity.

820 kΩ resistor was chosen to maintain a proper Vgs at different levels of potentiometer and to keep the input current approximately
zero.

470 Ω resistor was chosen to avoid the shorting of Gate and Source terminals at max speed.

100 KΩ POT was chosen to keep the current extremely low in that branch resulting near zero power loss in the resistors.

Variable terminal of POT was connected to Gate to vary the gate to source voltage by rotating the POT knob.

Motor was connected in between the source and drain terminal to create a dynamic speed control and avoid abrupt change in speed
while changing Vgs

CONCLUSION

 In Controlling the speed of a DC motor is vital for high-performance applications.

MOSFET-based speed control is an effective and efficient method to achieve precise
control over the motor's speed. MOSFET's advantages, such as low power
consumption, high current handling capacity, and fast switching speeds, make it a
suitable option for many industrial applications. Successful implementation of
MOSFET-based speed control has opened up new opportunities for optimized
performance and efficient operation of various systems. Further research and
development in this area will lead to more advanced and efficient technologies,
benefiting industries worldwide.
