MODULE 1
Activity 1
 Their point of origin, they both go through the womb of their mother for nine
months.
 Either one is a girl or boy. They both developed physically, emotionally and
spiritually. Biological processes involve changes in the individual’s physical
nature.
Analysis
1. What is development?
Development is a process that creates growth, progress, positive change or the
addition of physical, economic, environmental, social and demographic components.
Development is visible and useful, not necessarily immediately, and includes an
aspect of quality change and the creation of conditions for a continuation of that
change.
2. Will there be anything common in the pattern of development of boy or girl? If
yes, what?

Yes, between the big growth stages of infancy and adolescence, boys and girls
grow in height and weight at about the same slow but steady rate.

3. Will there be differences in their development, e.g. pace of rate of development?

What and why?

A child is learning a lot of things, but he/she will not always grow nd develop at
the same rate as other children. He/she may be faster or slower thn other
children his/her age.

4. Will the process of development take place very fast or gradually?

Development takes place gradually since it follows a life-long process which is

normal.

5. Do you believe that boy and girl will continue to develop even in adulthood? Or
will they stop developing in adlthood?

They will still develop in adulthood. Throughout adulthood, our bodies continue
to change, and we continue to learn and grow through experiences.

2. Define development in your own words. Translate the meaning of development in
Filipino and in your local dialect.
“Development is in order. It is an expansion or being mature in all aspects. It is
also a progress in mind set and physical appearance. It is changes in

3. State the 5 major principles of human development from a life-span perspective.
Give at least one application in the teaching-learning process. What have these
principles to do with you as you teach learners?
PROXIMODISTAL – the middle is the first to develop and movement extends
outwards from there. An examplle of such a pattern is the early development of
musclar ccontrol of the trunknd arms relative to the hand and fingers.
CEPHALOCAUDAL – this can be seen in human fetuses where the head is the
first body part formed. Once the body is formed the hands develop before feet.
BIOLOGICAL – they will gain height and weight. They will experience hormonal
changes when they reach the period of puberty, and cardiovascular decline as
they approach late adulthood.
COGNITIVE – processes involve changes in the individual’s thought,
intelligence, and language.
SOCIOEMOTIONAL – processes include changes in the individual’s relationship
with other people, changes in emotions, and changes in personality.

b. how do you apply your knowledge of cephalocaudal and proximodistal patterns of

development in your teaching?
Cephalocaudal development describes the general growth pattern of organisms to
develop areas near the main neural area (typically the head) earlier than areas of the
body that are more distant.
Proximodistal development is the progression of motor development radiating from the
ccenter of an organisms to the periphery. The classic example is a child learning to
move her shoulders before learning to control fine finger movement

5. Interpret the following quotations in relation to human development:

a. We share far more in likeness to every other human in ‘common
humanity’ (equal needs, vulnerabilities, genes, desires).
b. From the time we were born, we did not stay the same, in fact we have
changed and is continuously changing. This fact supports that we are
truly an unfinished project, and we are always in the process of
becoming.

6. In the light of researches on human development, which of the two approaches

is closer to the truth traditional or lifespan? Why?
The traditional approach emphasizes extensive change from birth to
adolescence, little or no change in adulthood, and decline in late old age.
The life-span approach emphasizes developmental change during adulthood as
well as childhood.

Directions: Do the following to ensure mastery of the big ideas presented in this
module. Write your answer on the space provided.
1. Meaning of Human Development
Human development, the process of growth and change that takes place
between birth and maturity.
2. Four principles of human development and their edcational implications.

the feet.
b. The direction of growth following the proximodistal pattern is from the
