3 Nemo Intelligent Device Interface System Description

Nemo Intelligent Device Interface is a revolutionary device control platform for 5G NR and LTE-A
QoS and QoE measurements. The platform offers a future-proof solution with an easy upgrade
path for new devices. With Nemo Intelligent Device Interface, you can perform true QoE
measurements using unmodified antennas of real consumer devices. It is easily expandable from
a single handheld unit to large-scale benchmarking systems, and the same modules and parts
can be reused for several phone models.

The Nemo Intelligent Device Interface unit is comprised of an intelligent DIN-rail mountable
smartphone holder, USB charging, and analog audio functionality. Nemo Intelligent Device
Interface enables using un-rooted smartphones with built-in antennas. The measurement
solution is scalable and easily expandable from a single handheld unit to large-scale
benchmarking systems.

Nemo Intelligent Device Interface offers flexible mounting options and automatic device pairing
reducing the setup time of the system. The advanced hardware design enables reliable self-
healing capabilities with a special firmware or an optional battery eliminator module. The system
has a Bluetooth interface providing a Bluetooth handsfree profile and serial port profile access to
the smartphone.

4 Setting up the Nemo Intelligent Device Interface system

4.1 Starting Nemo Intelligent Device Interface

Prior to connecting the test devices to the system, make sure that the drivers for the test
devices have been installed. Refer to the separate Nemo Outdoor Device Configuration
Guide documents for instructions. If you purchased the laptop from Keysight, all drivers
are pre-installed.

Check that power to the NIDI unit is switched off before starting. The power switch is
located on the left hand side of the unit.

You will need to set up and connect your test devices with Nemo Outdoor. The following
instructions will guide you through this process.

1. Attach a phone to the Nemo Intelligent Device Interface unit. Screen facing out.

14
Nemo Intelligent Device Interface User Guide

2. If your device has Nemo power control modification (a battery eliminator), connect the
optional device power cable.

3. Connect the power cable to the Nemo Intelligent Device Interface unit.

15
Nemo Intelligent Device Interface User Guide

4. Connect the USB cable from the phone to the Nemo Intelligent Device Interface unit.

5. Connect the audio cable from the phone to the Nemo Intelligent Device Interface unit.

6. Switch power on from the Nemo Intelligent Device Interface unit. The power switch is
located on the lower left-hand side of the Nemo Intelligent Device Interface unit. When
power is on, a LED next at the front of the unit lights up.

7. Insert the copy protection dongle to your Nemo Outdoor laptop and start the laptop.

16
Nemo Intelligent Device Interface User Guide

Make sure that the laptop meets the software and hardware requirements.

8. Connect the USB cable from the Nemo Intelligent Device Interface unit to the Nemo
Outdoor laptop. If you are connecting several Nemo Intelligent Device Interface units,
connect the devices one by one. Wait that the driver installation is finished before
connecting another device.

9. Check from the Windows Device Manager that the device drivers for the phones and the
Nemo Intelligent Device Interface unit (FTDI virtual COM port) have installed correctly.
Refer to the Nemo Outdoor Device Configuration Guide document for instructions.

10. Use the Autodetection tool in Nemo Outdoor to add all the connected devices to Nemo
Outdoor. If the autodetection fails, refer to the Device Configuration Guide for detailed
instructions on how to add the device in Nemo Outdoor manually.

11. Refer to Nemo Outdoor user guide for measurement configuration.

17

4.2 Window mounting kit

Use the window mounting kit to mount Nemo Intelligent Device Interface units on a vehicle
window. The kit is attached to the vehicle window with two suction cups. The mounting kit is
scalable to accommodate up to four Nemo Intelligent Device Interface units by varying the DIN
rail length. All DIN rail length variants are delivered by default in the product package.

Figure 5. Nemo Intelligent Device Interface window mounting kit parts

The mount has a cable management strap to securely hold and group data and power cables.

The window mounting kit suction cups are designed to support the weight of a
maximum of four Nemo Intelligent Device Interface units and their cables. Do not hang
any other equipment or items on the mounting kit.

18
Nemo Intelligent Device Interface User Guide

4.2.1 Installing the window mounting kit on a flat window pane

1. Select the appropriate DIN rail length depending on the number of Nemo Intelligent
Device Interface units you have (see Figure 5. Nemo Intelligent Device Interface window
mounting kit parts) and the correct adapter parts for flat window installation.

2. Attach a suction cup at both end of the DIN rail.

19
Nemo Intelligent Device Interface User Guide

3. Secure the suction cup to the DIN rail with four screws to a torque of 1.5 Nm.

4. Attach spacers to the DIN rail with screws. Leave a space of 65 mm on each side of the
spacer to allow for the Nemo Intelligent Device Interface units to fit between the
spacers.

20
Nemo Intelligent Device Interface User Guide

Clean the window surface and suction cups from dust and grease before installing the
mounting kit to the window.

5. Press the window mounting kit firmly on a window. Turn the latch in both suction cups
to lock the kit into place.

6. Attach a Nemo Intelligent Device Interface unit to the rail between the spacers.

21
Nemo Intelligent Device Interface User Guide

7. Depending on the rail length, attach 1-4 units to the rail.

22
Nemo Intelligent Device Interface User Guide

4.2.2 Installing the window mounting kit on a curved window pane

1. Select the appropriate DIN rail length depending on the number of Nemo Intelligent
Device Interface units you have (see Figure 5. Nemo Intelligent Device Interface window
mounting kit parts) and the correct adapter parts for curved window installation.

2. Attach a suction cup at both end of the DIN rail. Secure the suction cup to the DIN rail
with four screws to a torque of 1.5 Nm.

3. Attach spacers to the DIN rail with screws. Leave a space of 65 mm on each side of the
spacer to allow for the Nemo Intelligent Device Interface units to fit between the
spacers.

23
Nemo Intelligent Device Interface User Guide

Clean the window surface and suction cups from dust and grease before installing the
mounting kit to the window.
4. Press the window mounting kit firmly on a window. Loosen the thumb screws to adjust
the angle of the suction cups to make the mounting kit fit snugly against the window.
Re-tighten the thumb screws.

24

4.3 Table mounting kit

Use the table mounting kit in an office or lab environment to mount one or more Nemo
Intelligent Device Interface units on an even surface. The mount is scalable to accommodate up
to four Nemo Intelligent Device Interface units by varying the DIN rail length. All DIN rail length
variants are delivered by default in the product package. It is possible to tilt the DIN rail and
change the Nemo Intelligent Device Interface position.

The mount has cable management clamps to securely hold and group data and power cables
and a set of screws to secure the mount feet on a table.

2. Attach spacers to the DIN rail with screws. Leave a space of 65 mm on each side of the
spacer to allow for the Nemo Intelligent Device Interface units to fit between the
spacers. Also attach an end cap at both ends of the rail.

3. Insert an index bolt through the end caps at both ends of the rail and secure with a nut.
The bolt is used to adjust the tilt of the rail.

28
Nemo Intelligent Device Interface User Guide

4. Attach an end post at both ends of the rail.

5. Attach a rail at the back of the rack and another one at the bottom to make the rack
stable.

29
Nemo Intelligent Device Interface User Guide

6. Attach a base plate to the rack. This plate is used to secure the rack to a table or other
flat surface. If you are stacking several table mounting kits, attach the plate to the rack
at the bottom of the stack.
7. First, insert two mounting parts in the base plate as indicated in the picture below and
secure with screws.
