0 PHYSICAL INTERFACES

3.0.1 Payload Definition

3.0.1.1 Trunnion-Mounted Payloads Physical Definition


The cargo element physical definition and thermal and dynamic envelope shall
be as defined in Figure 3.0.1.1-1. Attachment point locations are shown in
Table 3.0.2.1.1-1. After the deployment of the X-38, the Orbiter on-orbit
cargo bay re-configuration envelope is shown in Figure 3.0.1.1-2.

Physical definition, thermal and dynamic envelope as well as mechanical
interface definition shall be as shown in Figure 3.0.1.3-1 for OCIB and
Figure 3.0.1.3-2 for SCU.

3.0.1.4 Aft Flight Deck (AFD) Payload Physical Definition NOT APPLICABLE

3.0.2 UNIQUE MISSION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

3.0.2.1 PAYLOAD UNIQUE DEFINITION

3.0.2.1.1 X-38 ASE ATTACH POINT DEFINITION


The Cargo Element interface locations shall be in accordance with Figure
3.0.1.1-1 and Table 3.0.2.1.1-1. The ASE Cradle utilizes non-deployable
trunnions as defined in Paragraph 3.3.1.2.1. The DPS utilizes deployable
trunnions as defined in Paragraph 3.3.1.2.2.2.

3.0.2.1.2 UNIQUE SMCH-SIP CONNECTOR INTERFACE PANELS


The ASE Cradle Bay 4 starboard and port LIP connector panel shall be as shown
in Figure 3.3.2.3-1.

The Bay 12 OCIB aft starboard SIP connector panel shall be as shown in Figure
3.3.2.1.2-1. The Bay 12 SCU aft port SIP connector panel shall be as shown in
Figure 3.3.2.1.1-1.

3.0.2.1.3 ELECTRICAL CABLE DEPARTURE POINTS AND LENGTHS


The ASE Cradle forward starboard Longeron Interface Panel (LIP) cable
departure points and lengths are as defined in Figure 3.0.2.1.3-1.
The ASE Cradle forward port Longeron Interface Panel (LIP) cable departure
points and lengths are as defined in Figure 3.0.2.1.3-2.

The Bay 13 OCIB aft starboard Standard Interface Panel (SIP) cable departure
points and lengths are defined in Figure 3.0.2.1.3-3. The Bay 13 SCU aft
port Standard Interface Panel (SIP) cable departure points and lengths are
defined in 3.0.2.1.3-4.

3.0.2.1.4 X-38 ELECTRICALLY-RELEASABLE UMBILICAL CONNECTOR ATTACHMENT BRACKET
The X-38 electrically-releasable umbilical connector is hardmounted
to a Bay 12 Starboard SIP Panel wingbracket structure as shown in Figure
3.0.2.1.4-1.

3.0.2.1.5 FREON R124 SUPPLY/RETURN BAY 12 PORT INTERFACE


The Freon R124 supply/return line interface shall be as defined in Figure
3.0.2.1.5-1.

3.0.2.1.6 CARGO ELEMENT-TO-ORBITER ELECTRICAL BONDING


When using Orbiter power services, the X-38 OCIB box electrical bonding
shall be accomplished via a fault wire in the main DC power connector.
The electrical bond shall be a Class-C, Type-I bond with a maximum
resistance of 2.5 milliohms. The fault wire in the power connector
shall satisfy the electrical bonding requirements for Fault Current,
RF, and Static Bonding.

3.0.4 ORBITER-TO-PAYLOAD DEDICATED ACCOMMODATIONS

3.0.4.2 LONGERON/ADAPTER MOUNTED PAYLOADS

3.0.4.2.1 Orbiter/Payload Structural Attachments


Payloads shall be supported on adapter beams mounted on the side of the
payload bay. The adapter beams shall attach to points on the sill longeron,
main frame and/or stub frame. The sidewall mounted carriers are designed to
distribute loads to the Orbiter without becoming part of the Orbiter structure
load path.

3.0.4.2.1.1 SPA Get Away Special (GAS) Adapter Beams


The STS shall supply SPA GAS adapter beams on the starboard side of the
payload bay in Bays 2 through 8, and on the port and starboard sides in Bay
13.

3.0.4.2.1.1.2 GAS Beams: Bay 13


GAS adapter beam to Orbiter attach points are defined in Figure
3.0.4.2.1.1.2-1.

3.0.4.2.1.1.2.1 Payload Attach Hardware Interface: Bay 13


Payloads shall attach to GAS adapter beams utilizing the attach points shown
in Figure 3.0.4.2.1.1.2.1-1. The X-38 SCU can use additional attach points.
Fasteners interfacing directly with the beam shall be free of grease and
cleaned per GSFC Specification SSPP-PROC-161 or Boeing Space and
Communication Process MPP-110-303.

3.0.4.2.3 Payload Connector Location and Cable Clamping


The Small Payload shall provide sockets/female connectors on the payload side
of the electrical interface. The payload interface shall be on the outer
perimeter of the payload with the connectors facing forward, aft or down in
Bays 2 through 8 and forward or downward in Bay 13. Figure 3.0.4.2.3-1
defines the allowable zone. The payload shall provide cable support
provisions such that the cables can be clamped within 6 inches of the
connectors (location subject to review). The cable support provisions shall
be either a No. 10 (0.1900)-32 UNF self-locking threaded receptacle or a tie
strap retention device which will accommodate STS provided tie straps (Part
No. ME127-0074-0001).

3.0.4.2.4 Payload-to-Orbiter Electrical Bond


Each payload shall provide a Payload-to-Orbiter electrical bond in accordance
with Paragraph 3.0.4.2.4.1, 3.0.4.2.4.2 and/or 3.0.4.2.3 unless otherwise
determined by payload unique requirements. All electrical bond interfaces
shall conform to requirements specified in Paragraph 10.7.4.2.

3.0.4.2.4.1 FAULT-CURRENT BOND

3.0.4.2.4.1.1 Bus Connector Bond


The bus connector bond is defined to be the main Orbiter-to-Cargo power
interface and shall be accomplished by a single wire in each power connector,
as specified in Paragraph 10.7.4.2.2.1.1.

3.0.4.2.4.1.2 Cargo-to-Orbiter Bond Strap


In lieu of the power connector bond described in paragraph 10.7.4.2.2.1.1, the
Cargo-to-Orbiter bond strap shall be STS-provided and shall be connected
between Orbiter structure and Payload ground point provisions as defined in
Figure 3.0.1.3-1. This bond shall meet bonding requirements specified in
Paragraph 10.7.4.2.2.1.2.

3.0.4.2.4.2 RF BOND

3.0.4.2.4.2.1 Cargo-to-Orbiter RF Bond Strap


The Cargo-to-Orbiter RF bond strap shall be STS-provided and shall be
connected between Orbiter structure and payload ground point provisions as
defined in Figure 3.0.1.3-1. This bond shall meet bonding requirements
specified in Paragraph 10.7.4.2.

3.0.4.2.4.3 STATIC BOND

3.0.4.2.4.3.1 Cargo-to-Orbiter Static Bond


The Cargo-to-Orbiter Static bond strap shall be STS-provided and shall be
connected between Orbiter structure and payload ground point provisions as
defined in Figure 3.0.1.3-1. This bond shall meet bonding requirements
specified in Paragraph 10.7.4.2.3.5.

3.0.4.2.5 (Reserved)

3.0.4.2.6 Ground Handling at KSC


Sidewall mounted payloads shall be installed while the Orbiter is in a
horizontal position.
