International Coastal Cleanup Narrative &

Accomplishment Report

On September 16, 2023, the world witnessed the International Coastal Cleanup with the
theme #SeaTheChange, an annual event of global significance that unites numerous agencies and
dedicated volunteers individual or group in a collective effort to preserve our coastlines. Schools
within the Lapu-Lapu City Schools Division eagerly joined this noble cause. Sabang Elementary
School played a pivotal role in this initiative, spearheaded by Mr. Roel Versales, the School
Head of this esteemed institution. The cleanup operation commenced at 0600H at the coastal
area of Sitio San Isidro I, Brgy. Sabang. In a heartwarming display of unity, teachers and school
personnel wholeheartedly engaged in this event to ensure the cleanliness of our shorelines and
the protection of marine life from the perils of oceanic debris. The tireless endeavor persisted for
over an hour, resulting in the collection of 15 or more sacks of trash and marine debris.

We are acutely aware of the myriad ways in which trash inflicts irreparable harm on our
communities, water quality, marine ecosystems, and the primary source of water pollution.
However, through the collective efforts of various agencies, conscientious citizens, and our own
dedicated team, we have demonstrated that nothing is beyond our reach. This event stands as a
resounding success, both collectively as a group and individually, leaving us with a profound
sense of accomplishment and contentment.

Before venturing to the shoreline, many of us envisioned it as an ordinary stretch of

beach. To our astonishment, we encountered a grim and desolate scene, marred by an unpleasant
stench that threatened to induce nausea. Waste was strewn in every direction, with cans, plastic
bottles, plastic bags, and more tarnishing the landscape. This eye-opening experience served as a
poignant lesson, impressing upon us the need to be responsible and conscientious members of
society. It prompted us to mature in our outlook and broaden our understanding of the challenges
our community faces. Moreover, it imparted valuable knowledge about the devastating impact of
trash on our oceans, the harm it inflicts upon marine life, and ultimately, the consequences it has
on us.
Thus, our duty as responsible individuals extend beyond mere acknowledgment; it
encompasses a deep respect for our natural world. We are obliged to protect and nurture it,
actively participating in initiatives that champion environmental preservation. We should be
eager to volunteer and collaborate in activities that address environmental concerns, no matter
how small our contributions may seem. This is the underlying purpose of the International
Coastal Cleanup—to promote clean and green surroundings. It is far more than a routine event; it
is a transformative force that empowers us to overcome the challenges of shoreline waste.
Through this initiative, we become guardians of marine life, acknowledging that they too are
integral to our existence.

Though we are but human, fallible, and prone to errors, we must recognize that all living
things deserve our respect and assistance. Without them, our world would be incomplete, and our
existence imperiled. Our knowledge should not be confined to self-serving pursuits; rather, it
should be harnessed for the betterment of all. The International Coastal Cleanup exemplifies this
ethos, demonstrating that by acting collectively, even in the smallest of ways, we can usher in
positive change and safeguard our precious environment.
