BS Criminology 3
2. Skid marks - form on the bearing surface of bullets as they enter the rifling of the barrel before the
bullet engages the rifling. Skid marks are typically produced by revolvers and have the appearance of
widening the land impressions at the nose of the bullet.
3. Shaving Marks - most commonly these marks are found on the bullet fires from a revolver due to a
poor alignment of the cylindrical with the bore.
4. Striation mark - The usually microscopic markings on the surface of a fired ammunition component
caused by a combination of force and motion; these marks can contain class and/or individual
characteristics.
5. Slippage mark – bullets fired from a worn-out barrel, oily barrels and slightly over sized barrels.
