Lesson Plan 8.8

This lesson plan aims to teach students about different network types - LAN, WLAN, and WAN. It divides students into groups and assigns each group one network type to research. Each group then prepares a short presentation on the characteristics, advantages, and real-world applications of their assigned network type. The presentations allow students to teach their peers and demonstrate their understanding of LANs, WLANs, and WANs. The plan seeks to provide students with a thorough comprehension of various network types through collaborative work and interactive discussion.

**Lesson Plan: Understanding Network Types - LAN, WLAN, and WAN**

**Subject:** IGCSE ICT (Information and Communication Technology)

**Topic:** Network Types - LAN, WLAN, and WAN

**Learning Objectives (LO):**

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

1. Define and differentiate between LAN, WLAN, and WAN.

2. Understand the characteristics and advantages of each network type.

3. Identify real-life use cases and scenarios where LAN, WLAN, and WAN are commonly implemented.

**Step to Success:**

Students will achieve success by actively participating in discussions, collaborating with peers, and
completing the group activity effectively. They will also demonstrate their understanding of network
types through their participation in the mini-group activity.

**Duration:** 45 minutes

**Starter (5 minutes):**

- Begin the lesson by asking students to recall what they know about computer networks.

- Facilitate a brief class discussion on the benefits of computer networks and why they are essential in
the modern world.

**Lesson Activity (30 minutes):**

1. **Introduction to Network Types (10 minutes):**

- Define and explain the three main network types: LAN, WLAN, and WAN.

- Highlight the key characteristics and differences between them.

2. **Group Activity - Exploring Network Types (15 minutes):**

- Divide the class into small groups, with each group assigned one network type (LAN, WLAN, or WAN).

- Provide resources such as textbooks or printed materials for research.

- Instruct each group to discuss and prepare a short presentation or poster explaining their assigned
network type, its characteristics, advantages, and real-life use cases.

- Encourage students to collaborate, share ideas, and research their topics thoroughly.

3. **Group Presentations (5 minutes):**

- Each group presents their findings to the rest of the class, sharing insights about their assigned
network type.

**Assessment for Learning (AFL):**

- During the group activity, circulate among the groups, observing their discussions, and offering
guidance if needed.

- Ask probing questions to assess individual students' understanding of their assigned network type.

**Plenary (5 minutes):**

- Summarize the key points covered in the group presentations, emphasizing the characteristics,
advantages, and real-life use cases of LAN, WLAN, and WAN.

- Facilitate a class discussion, allowing students to share any additional insights or ask questions about
network types.

**Homework (Optional):**

- As an extension, students can research and write a short report on emerging network technologies or
advancements in LAN, WLAN, or WAN.

**Conclusion:**

This lesson plan provides students with a comprehensive understanding of network types (LAN, WLAN,
and WAN) by engaging them in group activities and discussions. Through this interactive approach,
students will grasp the concepts effectively and develop a deeper appreciation for the significance of
different network types in the field of ICT.
