00 GENERATOR CIRCUIT BREAKER

7.08.01 General

The Generator circuit breaker (GCB) will be designed and fabricated for
installation in generator isolated phase bus duct system. The GCB will be used to
perform the following functions:

a) Synchronizing the generator to the system

b) Connecting and disconnecting the generator to the system under

out-of-phase conditions

c) Connecting the generator to the system under fault conditions i.e.

switching on to fault.

d) Interrupting load and fault currents from network and generator source
within the interrupting capability specified.

7.08.02 GCB Details

7.08.02.1 The switchgear covered by this contract specification is intended for indoor use
and consists of SF6 circuit breaker; disconnect switches; earthing switches on
both sides of the circuit breaker; one common control cabinet; common base
frame for mounting GCB; structure and platforms for maintenance of breaker.

Each phase of the switchgear will be enclosed in a non-withdrawable aluminum

enclosure to form a straight horizontal section of an isolated phase bus run. Each
3 phase assembly will be factory tested and shipped as one three phase unit
package.

7.08.02.2 Circuit Breaker

a) General

i) The circuit breaker will be of self blast type and use SF6 as
insulating and interrupting medium having two separate contact
systems, one for load current carrying and one for arc
interruption. The circuit breaker will have a basic impulse level
rating as per enclosed data sheet. The circuit breaker will be
operated with a spring drive mechanism

ii) The completely assembled circuit breaker, including linkages and

all other parts, will have ample mechanical strength to withstand
without damage all stresses incident to operation within the rated
short circuit current or the related required capabilities of the
circuit breaker, as well as stresses resulting from mounting,
moving or maintaining the circuit breaker in a proper manner.
iii) The time between the first and last poles to open or close equals
to 60 electrical degrees. The circuit breaker will be trip free and
anti-pumping. The circuit breaker will be capable of operating in
the machine hall between the max. and min. ambient
temperatures mentioned in data sheet.

b) Operating Mechanism

i) SPRING mechanism will be furnished for the circuit breaker,

complete with all control equipment; and the only external
requirement for operation will be electrical supplies at the
voltage(s) stated in data sheet. The design of the operating
mechanism will be co-ordinated with the circuit breaker design to
ensure positive opening of the circuit breaker and circuit
interruption, whether the tripping impulse is received in the fully
closed or any partially closed positions.

d) Interphase Cabling and Pipework

Interphase cabling and pipework will be supplied with the circuit

breaker.

e) Stored Energy Facilities

The capacity of stored energy facilities will be of sufficient size to permit

at least one O – C O operation, starting at normal working pressure. ,

f) SF6 Supervision

A SF6 gas density monitor will be supplied for each three phase circuit
breaker. One contact will be provided to indicate that the gas density has
reached a level where refilling the gas volumes is necessary.

Two additional contacts will be provided, each connected to one trip

circuit, to prevent tripping of the breaker when gas density falls below a
level too low to successfully complete an open operation of the breaker
at its ratings. All gas density switches will be temperature compensated
pressure switches having an adjustable range.

g) Circuit Breaker Controls

Dual trip coils will be provided. One circuit (primary) will be wired in
the normal breaker control scheme; and the secondary circuit wired to
terminal blocks for Owner’s use. This secondary trip circuit will include
all the interlocking associated with the primary circuit.

An antipumping relay will be provided to prevent the breaker from

repeated closing/opening operations on fault if the closing command is
persistently 'ON'. In the open position, upon loss of compressed air
supply, control power supply or SF6, the breaker will remain locked in
the fully open position. In the closed position, upon loss of compressed
air supply, control power supply or SF6, breakers will remain locked in
the fully closed position.

h) Accessories

Each circuit breaker will be equipped with an operation counter; a

reliable, easily readable mechanical position indicator to indicate the
open and closed position of the circuit breaker; a manual operation
device for maintenance purposes; and a minimum of 6 single pole
independent, reversible auxiliary contacts for each circuit breaker
mechanism for the Owner’s use in addition to those contacts required by
the contractor.

7.08.02.3 Disconnect Switches

a) The disconnect switches will be of the sliding tube type, air insulated,
gang-operated, motor driven with emergency manual drive; and each
phase assembly will be integrated with the circuit breaker into one single
phase, tubular aluminum enclosure forming a straight section of an
isolated phase bus. The disconnect switch will have the same current
carrying capacity as the circuit breaker.

b) The disconnect switches will be gang operated with an electrical motor

(see para 7.08.02.5) having an option to be manually operated.
Disconnect switch operation, manually or electrically, will be interlocked
with the circuit breaker and the grounding switches. The isolating gap
will be readily visible from outside the disconnecting switch, via window
scope.

c) The controls of the disconnect switches including the interlocking

circuits will be accommodated in the circuit breaker control cabinet. A
local-remote switch and push buttons for local control of the disconnect
switches will be provided.

7.08.02.4 Grounding Switches

a) The grounding switches will be of the rotary blade type, air insulated,
gang-operated motor driven with emergency manual drive; and will be
integrated with circuit breaker and the disconnect switches into one
single phase, tubular aluminium enclosure forming a straight section of
an isolated phase bus. The isolating gap will be visible from outside. No
making or breaking capabilities are required for the grounding switches,
via window scope.
b) The controls of the each grounding switch including the interlocking
circuits will be accommodated in the circuit breaker control cabinet. A
local remote switch and push buttons for local control of each grounding
switch will be provided.

7.08.02.5 Motor Drives for Disconnect and Grounding Switches

a) Motor mechanism will be of heavy duty construction and operate on the
voltage indicated in data sheet. The motor operated mechanism will be
designed to enable it to complete its normal travel to either "open" or
"close" position, once started, without holding the control switch
continuously in that position. Means of stopping the travel between fully
open and closed position is not acceptable.

b) Where applicable the manual operating handle on the motor-operated

device will be so designed as to enable the switch to be operated in either
direction by hand, starting from either the open or closed position. Means
will be provided so that manual operation of the switch will
automatically disconnect the motor-operated mechanism.

c) The motor operated mechanism will be provided with auxiliary switches.

In addition to those auxiliary switch contacts required by the contractor
for switch controls and interlocking, a minimum of 8 convertible
contacts will be provided for Owner’s use. A reliable, easily readable
mechanical position indicator via window scope will be furnished to
indicate the open and closed positions of each disconnect and grounding
switch.

7.08.02.6 Insulation

a) The circuit breaker with contacts open and insulating gas at atmospheric
pressure will be capable of withstanding an out-of-phase voltage across
the terminals with the phase angle between the two voltages continuously
varying. This requirement will assure that the circuit breaker in the open
position is capable of withstanding voltages to which they can be
subjected under such conditions as system being out-of-phase.

b) All parts of the insulation structure, including those between phases to

ground and across the open contacts, will be of an inherently stable
nature with a minimum susceptibility to dielectric tracking.

c) The mechanical strengths and physical characteristics of the insulation

structure will be such that the structure will withstand the shocks of
circuit breaker operations within ratings, reasonable strains of connecting
conductors, reasonable wide changes in temperature and associated
condensation. Provisions will be made to keep the insulation structure,
not normally exposed to the weather, dry during shipment.

7.08.02.7 Control Cabinets, Control Circuits

All control devices will be designed to withstand, without damage, the

mechanical shocks incident to handling and operations at rated short-circuit
current and at related required capabilities of the equipment. Wire sizes for
control wiring will be co-ordinated with the inherent current requirements and
voltage drop limitations of the breaker.
All spare auxiliary contacts on the proposed equipment will be wired to terminal
blocks for future use of the Owner. All terminal blocks associated with these
spares will be located at a convenient location. All terminals of control wires
will be identified in a substantial manner. Physical arrangements of all wiring
terminals will be identical on all similar circuit breakers.

7.08.028 Nameplate

A non-corrosive metal nameplate will be attached to the circuit breaker assembly

with non-corrosive metal fasteners. The nameplate will be placed in such a
position that it is clearly readable from ground level. Each breaker assembly will
have a unique serial number with pole designations.

7.08.02.9 Conductors

Conductors will be of high-conductivity copper or aluminum. All bus joints will

have silver-to-silver contacts surfaces. Insulating supports will meet the
dielectric strength requirements specified and will be capable of withstanding the
mechanical forces imposed by closing and opening operations and by the
currents specified.

Conductor terminations will be designed for direct connection to the bus

conductors. All connections will be made with bolted, flexible connectors to be
supplied by the contractor after co-ordinating the pertinent details including
forces transmitted to the bus during circuit breaker operation and the terminal
configuration required for the design of the connections.

7.08.02.10 Breaker Enclosure

a) Enclosures will be designed for welded connection to the isolated phase

bus enclosures fabricated of aluminum and capable of conducting
currents equal to the specified ratings. Inspection windows will be
provided in each enclosure as required to allow visual checks of the
isolating contact position, the grounding switch positions and to allow
inspection of the bus and interior of the enclosure.

b) The construction of each enclosure will be such as required to permit

complete disassembly of the phase assembly without removing the
enclosure from its anchors. The temperatures of the breaker current path
and enclosure at the points where connections to the isolated phase bus
are made will be co-ordinated between breaker and IPB-system.

c) Two copper or stainless steel ground pads will be provided on each

circuit breaker assembly, close to ground level and located opposite each
other. The control cabinet will be grounded with an internal/external
ground connection.
