Executive Summary

In this assignment, given the geometry of the reservoir and meteorology data, the thermal
stratification of reservoir water body is analysed using the Mixing Algorithm. The purpose of the
analysis is to determine the amount of additional mixing energy required to de-stratify the entire
reservoir for the following 24 hours after a midnight.
It is found from the study that for the given water depth of 35m, no additional mixing energy is
required as the reservoir is de-stratified by passive cooling through surface heat transfer and
wind shear mixing.

2 Assumptions
2.1 Assumptions of Parameters

The following parameters used in the analysis (as shown in Table 1 below) are assumed, but in
reality they can vary depending on conditions.
Table 1: Parameters Used in the Analysis
Attenuation coefficient of solar radiation in reservoir water (1/m) 0.5
Heat capacity of water, Cp J/(kg oC) 4200
Emissivity from reservoir surface 0.96
Drag coefficient of air-water interface, CD (J/(kg oC) 0.015

2.2 Assumption of Reservoir Model

Figure 1: Discretisation of Reservoir into Layers for Analysis

As shown in Figure 1, the reservoir model is made up of discrete layers with constant cross-
sectional areas throughout the thickness of each layer. This assumption is valid as long as the
thickness of each layer i is small enough. As thickness of each layer increases, (i) the estimated
solar energy absorbed by each layer would be over-estimated due to the exponential decay nature
of solar penetration through water, as shown in Figure 2; (ii) the temperature increase in each
layer would be under-estimated because the layer does not exclude “Region X” (see Figure 1)
due to sloping in the edge of reservoir.
The smaller the slope of reservoir edge (i.e. closer to being horizontal), the smaller the thickness
of each layer should be. Otherwise, under-estimation of temperature increase of each layer can
happen, leading to under-estimation of additional mixing energy required for de-stratification.

Figure 2: Temperature Profile of Lake after Solar Radiation Only

2.3 Time Step of Meteorology Data

Parameters in the meteorology data are assumed to be constant from the beginning of each time
step till the next time step.

2.4 Wind Shear Energy

The density of the top layer changes as mixing occurs. However, the rate of density change
within the time step is unknown with the available information.
Therefore, it is assumed that the shear velocity is based on the initial density of the top mixed
lake layer after mixing from surface heat transfer.
This assumption can be valid if wind speed is relatively low and the shear/viscous force is
transmitted gradually down the lake from the surface, instead of turbulent shear mixing limited
to a certain depth from the surface and the lower layers being relatively un-disturbed.

2.5 Additional Energy Required to De-stratify for Each Time Step

The remaining wind energy which is less than the required energy to mix the next layer is not
considered when estimating the amount of additional mixing energy required. This provides a
more conservative estimate to ensure the reservoir is adequately mixed.

7
CIVL5670 Assignment Pik Wei Ch’ng SID: 450024890

3 Methodology
In this analysis, Matlab script is written to estimate the additional mixing energy required to de-
stratify the reservoir. The script is based on the Mixing Algorithm provided by CIVL5670 unit of
study. The Matlab script can be referred to in Appendix 7.1.
The methodology used in the Matlab script is described as follows:

(1) The temperature change in each layer for a given time step, ΔT, is given by Δ𝑇 =
(𝐼𝑡 𝐴𝑖 𝑒 −𝜂⋅𝐷𝑧 −𝐼𝑡 𝐴𝑖+1 𝑒 −𝜂⋅𝐷𝑧 )⋅Δ𝑡
. It can be seen that the intensity of solar radiation is a
𝜌𝑖 𝐴𝑖 𝐷𝑧𝐶𝑝
function of time. Dz is the thickness of each discrete layer.
(2) Then, the density of each layer is determined based on the updated temperature. A linear
approximation of density is used based on the equation 𝜌𝑤 = 𝜌𝑟𝑒𝑓 (1 − 𝛽 ⋅ (𝑇 −
𝑇𝑟𝑒𝑓 )) , 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝛽 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑎𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑐𝑜𝑒𝑓𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑇𝑟𝑒𝑓 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜌𝑟𝑒𝑓 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 reference
temperature and density respectively.
(3) Then, surface heat transfer is applied on the reservoir surface. Three heat transfer
mechanisms are used:
a. Long wave radiation (heat loss), QL
𝑄𝐿 = 𝜖𝜎(𝑇 + 273)4
b. Sensible heat transfer (conduction), QS
𝑄𝑠 = 𝐶𝐻 (𝑇 − 𝑇𝑎 ); 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝐶𝐻 = 1.4 × 10−3 𝑈
c. Evaporative heat loss, QEV
𝑄𝐸𝑉
= 𝐶𝑊 𝑈(𝑞𝑎 − 𝑞𝑠 ); 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝐶𝑤 𝑖𝑠 𝑡𝑎𝑘𝑒𝑛 𝑎𝑠 1.4
𝑘𝑔
× 10−3 , 𝑞𝑎 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑞𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑎𝑏𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒 ℎ𝑢𝑚𝑖𝑑𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑠 ( 3 ) 𝑖𝑛 𝑎𝑡𝑚𝑜𝑠𝑝ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑦.
𝑚
The absolute humidity at water surface (also the saturation vapour density) is estimated using an
empirical formula adopted from (Hyperphysics, 2018). The formula plots relationship between
saturated vapour density and water temperature.
(4) After that, the temperature in the top surface layer is modified with the total surface heat
transfer.
(5) Next, the temperature in the top layer is compared against that in the lower layer. Mixing is
allowed to occur is the top layer is cooler because cooler water is denser.
(6) The mixed layers now have a temperature which is derived by using volume-weighted
average. The new temperature is again compared to that of the next layer down. Mixing
continues until the average temperature of the mixed layers is more than or equal to the lower
layer.
(7) When mixing due to surface heat transfer has been accounted for, wind mixing is considered
by comparing the available energy in wind shear, Ea, against required energy to mix the
remaining thermally stratified layers, Er, where:

8
CIVL5670 Assignment Pik Wei Ch’ng SID: 450024890

𝐸𝑎 = 𝜌𝑤 𝑢∗ 3 Δ𝑡 ⋅ 𝐴𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑒

𝐸𝑟 = Δ𝐶𝑀 ⋅ 𝑀 ⋅ 𝑔

∫ 𝑧 ⋅ 𝐴(𝑧)𝑑𝑧
𝐶𝑀 (𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦) =
∫ 𝐴(𝑧)𝑑𝑧
∫ 𝜌(𝑧) ⋅ 𝑧 ⋅ 𝐴(𝑧)𝑑𝑧
𝐶𝑀(𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛) =
∫ 𝜌(𝑧) ⋅ 𝐴(𝑧)𝑑𝑧
Δ𝐶𝑀 = 𝐶𝑀 (𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦) − 𝐶𝑀(𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛)

𝑀 = ∫ 𝜌(𝑧) ⋅ 𝐴(𝑧)𝑑𝑧

(8) If Ea > Er, mixing occurs. Then, Er is subtracted from Ea (total wind energy available for the
time step). The deducted Ea is then compared with the energy required to mix the next layer
down. Mixing stops when Ea < Er.
(9) After wind mixing is applied, the temperature profile (and hence water density profile) for
the reservoir is plotted or tabulated for the particular time step.
(10) The additional mixing energy required to stir the remaining non-mixed thermal layers and
to de-stratify the whole reservoir for the time step is estimated using the same method as in
Step 7.
(11) The updated temperature and density profiles for the current time step are carried forward
for analysis in the next time step, where Step 1 to Step 10 are repeated until all time steps
have elapsed.

Table 4.1 and Table 4.2 show the variation of the density and temperature of reservoir water
surface with time.

From Appendix 7.2, it is noted that the temperature profile or density profile at the end of
each time step is constant for the reservoir on that day. In other words, temperature and
density remains uniform at quasi-steady state throughout the depth of the reservoir on that
day.

Also, the additional mixing energy to de-stratify the reservoir is found (from
running the Matlab script) to be zero for each time step.

5 Discussion on Results
The main causes for the reservoir having uniform temperature and density profile throughout its
depth could include:
(a) The rate of heat loss (cooling through the 3 surface heat transfer mechanisms) is higher
than the rate of heat gain through solar radiation.
Detail: Even at 12 hours after midnight (noon) when solar radiation is the highest (over 500
W/m2), the magnitude of temperature increase of the water surface due to solar radiation (i.e.
about 5.2 x 10-12 oC) is significantly smaller than the temperature drop due to surface heat
transfer (i.e. 0.35 oC).
As shown in Appendix 7.2.3, even without surface heat loss and wind mixing, the
temperature increase (due to solar radiation alone) in the reservoir water body is considerably
slow and close to negligible. Thermal stratification occurs in the later time steps but the
stratification is not significant.

(b) Huge volume and large surface area of water in reservoir.

Detail: Huge volume gives the reservoir a high heat capacity and this results in a slow
increase in temperature. Large surface area exposes the reservoir water to more heat loss. The
cross-sectional geometry of the reservoir is shown in Figure 3 below.

Figure 3: Cross Section Area down the Depth of Reservoir

From Figure 3, it can be seen that the reservoir has a wide rim and gentle slope relative to its
volume. This geometry favours the cooling and mixing of the water in the reservoir.

11
CIVL5670 Assignment Pik Wei Ch’ng SID: 450024890

(c) Conditions (a) and (b) are further enhanced by wind shear power acting over a large
surface area. This helps de-stratifying the lake without artificially supplied active energy.

6 Conclusion
Given the geometry of the reservoir and the meteorology data, thermal stratification does not
sustain in the reservoir. Hence, no additional mixing energy needs to be supplemented.
