The article titled as, “quality and availability of information in primary healthcare: the

patient perspective” is authored by Abelsson et al. (2020) and focuses on the communication of

patients with primary health care (PHC) to gain valuable information from quality sources in the

healthcare settings. Gaining quality information is essential for patients since a number of

patients tend to make their health related decision based on such information. Need of

information for the patients are met by their actions and feelings in their effort and once this

information is sought the next phase is to find out right use of this information which ultimately

improves health related decisions of patients. The skills to access, evaluate and find the proper

use of information is information literacy.

This article uses a primary qualitative research design where, first hand data is collected

with the help interviews and is analyzed using content analysis to conclude results. A number of

themes and subthemes are constructed. All the participants were interviewed with their consent

and their privacy concerns were highly regarded. These interviews have been conducted either in

the primary health care centers, or in the office of the author. This study attempts to address

emotions and feelings of patients connected with the process of primary care. To address the

communication of patients with the PHC it was essential to understand their communication as

well as their emotional context behind seeking information.

Additionally, impacts of the information are diverse on not only decision making by

patients but also on their emotional health. When the provided information does not come from a

reliable sources or the communication between patients and health professionals (HPs) is not

smooth it may lead them to frustration and anxiety. Therefore, the major theme constructed is

that patients are unable to establish a positive emotional connection with their HPs. Although,

the information provided by the health professionals is widely trusted, yet, a lack of connection

may lead patients towards unpredictability and lack of understanding regarding their health

information. It has also been noted then when patients seek information and approach health

professionals they face challenges to contact them.

Therefore, a few ways to contact HPs are also included such as accessing them online

through internet or using telephones. It has been noted that most of the participants have used

these means of communication to communicate with their HPs. Although, the presence of HPs at

the PHC evoked a positive feeling for patients when they visited PHC, yet, they faced barriers

and challenges in communication and information access. One of the barriers was the Swedish

language when fluently spoken to the patients those were not fluent at Swedish language.

Another challenge in communication was to meet new PHC staff members almost every time.

However, once patients were able to obtain information, this information was trustworthy for

them to make their primary health decisions. Yet, some patients used internet to verify that

information as well as sought help from family and friends.
