An observer is walking along a straight road which is aligned to the north. At one point the
observer notices a tall tree on a bearing of 54∘ with an angle of elevation of 20∘ . He then
walks 220 metres along the road, the tree is now on a bearing of 160∘ with an angle of
elevation of 25∘ . Let ℎ be the height of the tree.

a) In the space below, draw a diagram that shows the information above.
The straight road which is aligned to north is given.
Label the point where the tree is first noticed 𝐴, the second point where the tree is
observed 𝐵, the base of the tree as 𝑋 and the top of the tree as 𝑇. 2 marks

b) Determine the size of ∠𝐴𝑋𝐵 to the nearest degree. 2 marks

Question 3 (9 marks total)

In this question, you will be required to use trigonometry and Google Maps to verify the total
area between three locations – Macquarie Fields High School, Macquarie Fields Leisure
Centre and Monarch Fields.

Follow the instructions to verify the calculation of total area size between the three locations.

1. Open up Google Maps and locate Macquarie Fields High School

2. Right-click to measure the distance between Macquarie Fields High School,

Macquarie Fields Leisure Centre and Monarch Fields. This will create a triangle.

3. Take a screenshot of this triangle and paste it in the space provided (Question 3a) –

Page 5). The screenshot should also include the total area and distance calculated

by Google Maps.

4. Sketch the triangle from Question 3a) - Page 5, clearly showing the distance between

each side and labelling the vertices.

5. Using trigonometry, show your calculations in Question 3c) – Page 6 to verify the

total area calculated by Google Maps.

Question 4 (10 marks total)

In this question, you will be required to use trigonometry to calculate the height of an object
in your surroundings.

Follow the instructions to calculate the height of an object and record your answers in the
space provided.

1. Measure and record the height from the ground to your line of sight correct to the
nearest centimetre.
2. Locate an object that you would like to calculate the height of.
3. Stand at least 3 metres away from the object.
4. Using a clinometer, measure and record the angle of elevation from your line of sight
to the top of the object.
5. Take a close-up photo showing your reading of the clinometer. Include this photo in
your submission.
6. Take a photo from the side view to include you using the clinometer and the object
(see Example below). Include this photo in your submission.
Example:

7. Measure the perpendicular distance between you and the object. Record this
information.
8. Draw a diagram showing relevant measurements to aid your calculation of the height
of the object.

* A clinometer is an instrument used for measuring the angle of slopes. You can choose to
construct your clinometer, purchase/borrow a clinometer or use a digital clinometer.
