Exercise 1
A long distance telephone company uses a fiber optic network to transmit telephone calls and other
information between locations. Calls are carried over cable lines and switching nodes. A section of the
company's transmission network is shown here. The numbers above each arc show the capacity in
thousands of messages that can be transmitted over that branch of the network.
In order to keep pace with the volume of information transmitted between the source and destination
points, use the network to determine the maximum number of messages that can be sent from a city
located at node 1 to a city located at node 7.

High-Price Oil Company owns a network of pipelines used to transport oil from one source to several
storage sites. One section of the network is as follows:

network, the company can supply any of the storage sites.
