IMPORTING KML FILE (GOOGLE EARTH LAYER FILE) INTO QGIS

1. Start QGIS. Select Add Vector Layer icon from the set of toolbars.
See image below.

2. Press Browse button in the Add vector layer dialog window. Make sure that the
Encoding is in UTF-8. Refer to image below.

3. Locate the folder where the kml file reside. In the type of file, select Keyhole Markup
Language (KML) to reveal the kml file. Refer to image below.

4. Next, select the file (Road.kml)


then press Open button.

5. In Add vector layer window, press Open button to load the file in QGIS map window.
Your map window should looks similar to the image below.

Checking the properties of the layer file

6. In the Table of Contents, select and right click the layer (Road.kml) then select
Properties to bring up Layer Properties dialog window. Make sure to select the
Metadata tab. See image below.

7. After examining the properties of the layer, just press Cancel button to close Layer
Properties window.

Converting kml layer file into vector/shapefile

8. In the Table of Contents, select then right click


the layer (Road.kml) and select Save As…
from the dropdown options.

9. In Save vector layer as… window, set the following:

a. Format – select ESRI shapefile


b. Save as – click Browse button,
then locate the folder where you want
to save the vector/shapefile.
Name it as road_WGS84, then press
Save button.
c. Encoding – select System and
Selected CRS
d. CRS – WGS84
e. Mark x on Add saved file to map
f. Press OK button

10. Click OK in the next alert window to appear.

Removing unnecessary layer

11. In the Table of Contents, select then right click the layer road.kml and choose Remove
from the dropdown options.

Changing the Coordinate Reference System of the Layer

12. In the Table of Contents, select then right click the layer (road_WGS84)
and select Save As… from the dropdown options. (Same as Step 8)

13. In Save vector layer as… window, set the following:

a. Format – select ESRI shapefile


b. Save as – click Browse button,
then locate the folder where you want
to save the vector/shapefile.
Name it as road_Luzon, then press
Save button.
c. Encoding – select System and
Selected CRS
d. CRS – Luzon 1911
e. Mark x on Add saved file to map
f. Press OK button

Projecting the Layer into UTM

14. In the Table of Contents, select then right click the layer (road_Luzon)
and select Save As… from the dropdown options. (Same as Step 12)

15. In Save vector layer as… window, set the following:

a. Format – select ESRI shapefile


b. Save as – click Browse button,
then locate the folder where you want
to save the vector/shapefile.
Name it as road_UTM, then press
Save button.
c. Encoding – select System and
Selected CRS
d. CRS – UTM Zone 51N
e. Mark x on Add saved file to map
f. Press OK button
