C. Establishing a purpose for the lesson

“The activity that we had is associated with

our today’s lesson.

“_____, kindly read the following objectives. “

At the end of the lesson, the students must
have:
1. Identified the intonation patterns
properly.
2. Performed accurately the intonation of
a phrase or sentence
3. Practice correct intonation and pitch.

“Thank you for reading it.”

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing
new skills #1

“We will now proceed to the brief discussion

of our topic, falling intonation and rising
intonation so that you will be able to
distinguish them from one another and notice
their difference.”

“Now class, let us define intonation”

Intonation describes how the voice rises and
falls in speech. It is all about how we say
things, rather than what we say, the way the
voice rises and falls when speaking.

“So, intonation is the rise and fall of the voice,

in other words, it is the music of language.”

“In English, there are two basic patterns in

intonation. The falling intonation and the
rising intonation.”

“Class remember that a downward arrow ( )

indicates a fall in intonation and an upward
arrow ( ) indicates a rise in intonation.”

“Let us define falling intonation.”

“Please read, Ms. __________”

Falling intonation describes how the voice

falls on the final stressed syllable of a phrase
or a group of words. A falling intonation is
very common in WH-questions. Statements,
commands, explanations, those are three
instances in which we use this falling
intonation.
“Falling intonation is the most common
intonation pattern in English. It is commonly
found in statements, commands, wh-
questions (information questions),
confirmatory question tags and
exclamations.”
For example:

1. Here is the weather forecast.

2. Write your name here.
3. What country do you come from?
4. He thinks he’s so clever, doesn’t he?

Now, can someone give at least one example

of falling intonation?

“Yes, _________”
The student will give example.

“That;s right. Let’s now proceed to Rising

Intonation.”

or example:
 Here is the
weather Examples:

↘forecast.
 I hear the Health Centre is expanding.
So, is that the new doctor?
 Are you thirsty?
 Would you like a cup of rising tea?

(statements)
 Write your
name ↘here. Do you like it

(commands)
 What country Yes, Ma’am

do you
come ↘from?
None, Ma’am

(wh-
questions)
 He thinks
he9s so clever,
doesn9t ↘he?
(confirmatory
question
tags)
 How nice of
↘ you!
(exclamations)
“Rising Intonation describes how the voice
rises at the end of a sentence. Rising
intonation is common in yes-no questions.”

“Kindly read the examples, ________”

“Can someone give at least one example of

rising intonation?”

“Yes, _____”

“Excellent. Okay class, do you have any

questions or clarification?”

“Do you understand the two types of

intonation?”

“Do you have any questions so far?”

E. Discussing new concepts and practicing
new skills #2

“If there is none, let us proceed to the

combination of rising and falling intonation in
the same sentence. The combination is
called Rise-Fall or Fall-Rise intonation. “

“Rise-Fall Intonation

• describes how the falls and then rises. We

use rise-fall intonation at the end of
statements when we want to say that we are
not sure, or when we may have more to add.

“Kindly read the examples, ________” (Students will accurately recite the examples)

For example:
Are you having soup or salad?
(choices)
I like football, tennis, basketball and
volleyball. (lists)
So you both live in Los Angeles? Well
Alex does. (unfinished thoughts)
Unless he insists, I’m not going to go.
(conditional sentences)

“Can someone give at least one example of

rise-fall intonation? Yes, _________” (The student will give an example)

“Thank you”

“Do you have any questions or clarifications None, Ma’am

regarding the rise-fall intonation?”

F. Developing mastery

“Since you no longer have any questions and

everything is clear to you, let us proceed to
our next activity.”

“For our main activity, we will have a role

play. You will act as the waiter and the
customer. Then you are going to read the
script accurately according to your roles. You
will be graded according to your intonation,
facial expression and cooperation.”

“Class, is the direction clear to you?” Yes, Ma’am

C: Waiter, this soup is cold!

W: Ow, did you want hot soup?
C: Yes, hot soup. Hot tomato soup, not
pea soup.
W: It is tomato.
C: But it is green!
W: Yes, green tomato soup. It is
delicious.
C: I want red tomato soup. Hot red
tomato soup.
W: I’m afraid we haven’t got red tomato
soup.
C: Well, what have you got?
W: Well, we have got red tomato salad….

The students will perform the dialogue.

“Let’s start.”

G. Making generalizations & abstractions

about lesson

“Intonation is how the voice rises and falls in

speech. I know you learned a lot this day, so
can someone sum up our discussion?”

“Thank you. It is important to use intonation

properly because you may mislead your
listener or audience. Intonation conveys
meaning in many ways.”

“Falling intonation is when we lower our voice

at the end of a sentence. Rising intonation is
when we raise the pitch of our voice at the
end of a sentence. In Fall-Rise, the
pitch/intonation rises and falls within the
sentence. “

“Is that clear?” Yes, Ma’am

H. Evaluating Learning

“This time, let us find out if you have

mastered the key concepts of this lesson by
trying out this activity.”

“Let me read the direction for you.”

Directions: Read the following sentences

then determine if it’s falling intonation, rising
intonation or rise-fall intonation.

_________1. I’ll be back in a minute.

_________2. Stop talking.
_________3. would you like a coke or some
juice?
_________ 4. Are you scared?
_________ 5. I need rice, beans, lettuce, and

you?
_________ 8. that’s not what you wanted,
was it?
_________ 9. she bought the magazine, but
she didn’t read.
_________ 10. if you have any problems, just
contact us.
“I will give you 7 minutes to answer the
activity.”

“Time check, you only have 2 minutes left.”

“Are you done, class?

“Who would like to share his/her answer to

the class?”

“Yes, ______________.”

(The teacher will collect the answers of the

students).

V. ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES/ASSIGNMENT

“Class copy your assignment in your English (The students will copy their assignment.)
notebook.”

you and a member of your family similar to
the activity a while ago. Put a proper
intonation arrow to its proper intonation
words.
“Are you done copying your assignment?

Yes, Ma’am

“Class, do you have any question?”

“If there is none, let’s call it a day.” None, Ma’am.
