3.1 Graphs of Standard Functions

This document provides an overview of transformations of functions in Unit 3. It begins with a review of function concepts defined in Unit 1, including the vertical line test and unique solution to determine if a relation is a function. It then presents 6 common functions - quadratic, square root, cubic, absolute value, reciprocal, and exponential - and has students make a table of values, graph each function, and determine the domain and range for each using a graphing calculator.

EXT MATH 10 UNIT 3: TRANSFORMATIONS OF FUNCTIONS

Section 3.1: Graphs of Standard Functions

Review of Function Concepts from Unit 1

A relation describes how two quantities or variables are related to each other.

A function is a relation in which, for every of x, there is only one value of y. In other words no two
ordered pairs have the same first coordinate.

Vertical Line Test: A relation is a function if every vertical line touches the graph of the relation at
only one point.
Equation Test: A relation is a function if its equation can be solved uniquely for y.

The domain of a relation is the set of first coordinates.

The range of a relation is the set of second coordinates.

Exercise
For each of the functions below, make a table of values and graph the function. Determine the domain
and range of each. Use a GDC to check your results.
