Module 3 Problem Solving

George Polya is known as "The Father of Problem Solving" for developing a four-step method for solving problems: 1) Understand the problem, 2) Devise a plan, 3) Carry out the plan, 4) Look back. The method is demonstrated through examples of finding consecutive integers with a given sum and calculating the number of handshakes between students. The document concludes by outlining the four steps to solve the problem of finding the smallest number among four consecutive numbers with a sum of 122.

smallest number?
George Polya is one of the
foremost recent
mathematicians to make a
study of problem solving. He
was born in Hungary and
moved to the United States
in 1940. He is also known as
“The Father of Problem
Solving”.

Example 1

The sum of three consecutive

integers is 27. Find the three
integers.
1.UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM:
The three consecutive integers that has a sum of
27.

2. DEVISE A PLAN: Algebraic equation

Let:
⚬ x = first integer
⚬ x + 1 = second integer
⚬ x + 2 = third integer
x + x+1 + x+2 = 27
3. CARRY OUT THE PLAN:
x + x+1 + x+2 = 27
3x + 3 = 27 • x = 8 = 1st
3x = 24 • x + 1 = (8) + 1 = 9 - 2nd integer
• x + 2 = (8) + 2 = 10 - 3rd integer
x=8

4. LOOK BACK:
• 8 - 1st
8 + 9 + 10 = 27
• 9 - 2nd integer
• 10 - 3rd integer
27 = 27
Example 1

PROBLEM:
The sum of three consecutive odd integers is 27.
Find the three integers.
ANSWER:
The three consecutive integers whose sum is 27 are
8, 9, and 10
Example 2

There are ten students in a room. If

they give a handshake for his classmate
once and only once, how many
handshakes can be made?
Example 3

If the perimeter of a tennis court is

228 feet and the length is 6 feet
longer than twice the width, then
what is its area?

The sum of four consecutive
numbers is 122. What is the
smallest number?
1.UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM:
The smallest number among the four consecutive
numbers whose sum is 122.
2. DEVISE A PLAN: Algebraic equation
Let:
⚬ x = first integer
⚬ x + 1 = second integer
⚬ x + 2 = third integer
⚬ x + 3 = fourth integer
x + x+1 + x+2 + x+3 = 122
3. CARRY OUT THE PLAN:
x + x+1 + x+2 + x+3 = 122
4x + 6 = 122 • x = 29 = 1st
4x = 116 • x + 1 = (29) + 1 = 30 - 2nd integer
• x + 2 = (29) + 2 = 31 - 3rd integer
x = 29
• x + 3 = 29 + 3 = 32 - 4th integer x
4. LOOK BACK:
• 29 - 1st
• 30 - 2nd integer 29 + 30 + 31 + 32 =122
• 31 - 3rd integer 122 = 122
• 32 - 4th
PROBLEM
