4 CTF Assignment Marking Rubric - 072023 v4 - MHH
Instructions
No marks will be awarded for the entire assignment if any part of it is found to be copied directly
from printed materials, online materials or from another student. All submissions should be
made on or before the due date. Any late submissions after the deadline will not be entertained.
Zero (0) mark will be awarded for late submission unless extenuating circumstances are upheld.
Section A: CTF Strategies – CTF Live Competition (Group Component, 30% - CLO2)
Presentation Criteria:
1. Each group must enter ONE live CTF competition within the given assignment period either
online or offline.
2. The competition must get approval by the lecturer or get recommendation from the lecturer.
3. Each group must propose CTF strategies in the gameplay (e.g team division, team strength,
tools used or wildcard) in a team based on individual's specific skills.
4. Group needs to include the following contents in their presentation proposal:
a. What are the competition is all about (e.g jeopardy style, attack and defence etc.) and
which category are offered in the CTF live competition?
b. Minimum of THREE challenges that your group find it interesting in the live CTF
competition:
• What challenges are available? - challenge categories / levels etc.
• How gameplay is being structured? – contents / knowledge and skills paths /
module?
• What strategy and tool are used to solve the challenge?
c. Individuals’ skills evaluation within CTF team.
• How students’ involvement / engagement / performance is being measured /
monitored.
Each member of the group is required to present their part during the presentation.
Marks allocated for presentation will awarded to each member accordingly based on their findings
and demonstration skills.
Section B: CTF Write Ups – CTF Live Competition (Individual Component, 70% - CLO3)
Activities:
1. Selection of CTF challenges’ category:
a. Each group member should select ONE category from the list below. The selected
category and challenge should be different from the other members.
i. OSINT
ii. Cryptography
iii. Web Exploitation (No SQL Injection & Command Injection)
iv. Reverse Engineering
v. Binary Exploitation
vi. Computer Forensics
vii. Network Forensics
viii. Boot2Root (Pwn)
ix. Miscellaneous
Note: There are possible write-ups available online. You may refer to them for learning purpose
and guide, however the write-ups should be originally yours to document the actual steps that you
perform to solve the challenges. Hence, providing your own screenshots are considered as
evidence. Do not use others’ screenshots or any screenshots you might find available online.

Present the results of your work in a professional and systematic manner, in the form of an online
submissions via Moodle (Write-ups) and Recording / Physical (Presentation).

Document the results of your work in a professional, academically written and systematic manner,
in the form of an online submissions via Moodle.
Submission Requirements
1. Online submissions via Turnitin Moodle. Separate submission links will be provided in
Moodle.
2. Submissions must be in Microsoft Word format with Times New Roman font size 12 and in
1.5 line spacing justified.
3. Expected length is approximately 1400 words for Section B (excluding diagrams, tables,
appendixes, and references).
4. Submissions need to be well presented. Submissions that are unprofessional in its look
(disorganised, inconsistent) will not fare well when marks are allocated.
5. Every submission must have a front cover. The front cover should have the following details:
a) Name(s) /and TP number(s)
b) Intake code,
c) Module code and name
d) Submission title
e) Date assigned (the date the submission was handed out)
f) Date completed (the date the submission is due to be handed in)
6. All information, figures and diagrams obtained from external sources must be referenced using
the APA referencing system accordingly.
