Computer
Derivation.
The word computer comes from Latin word “Compute” which means to Calculate. So it is
also called a calculating device.
Definition.
A computer is an electronic device which takes input from users, processes it and gives
output.

Hardware
All physical components is called hardware.

Software
The set of instructions given to the computer to perform a task is called software.
Types of Software.
1. System software
2. Applications software
System software
It is designed to operate and control computer hardware and provide a plate form for running
applications software like “OS”.
Application software
To work on it like word processing software, Spreadsheet
software.
o Monitor
The part of a computer that allows you to see what the computer is processing.
1. CRT :( Cathode Ray Tubes)
2. LCD :( liquid crystal display)
3. LED :( Light EMITTING Diode)
o Keyboard
Keyboard allows a computer user to enter text commands into a word processor.
Mouse
Mouse allows a computer user to use a pointer/ cursor to click on the interface to enter
commands.
System unit
The system unit contain different electronic components
of computer used to process data.
Typical system unit devices include:
1. Motherboard
2. CPU (Processor)
3. Memory
4. Disk drives
5. Ports
6. Power supply
7. Expansion cards.
8. Fan
Two most common shapes of system unit available in
market are tower casing and desktop casing as shown in fig below:
Motherboard
The most important and main circuit board inside the system unit is called motherboard.
It contain different type of ports, slot and connecters to attach different hardware
component.

Read-only memory, or ROM in non-volatile
(Permanent) and the contents are retained
even after the power is switched off. `

RAM is referred to as volatile
(Temporary) memory and is lost when the power is
turned off.
Disk drives
A disk drive is a device that reads and/or writes data to a
disk. The most common type of disk drive is a hard drive.
Power supply
A power supply is a hardware component that
supplies power to an electrical device.

Desktop
After loading computer the first screen is called
desktop.
The words Data and Information may look similar and many people use these
words very frequently, but both have lots of differences between them.
Data:
Data are plain facts. The word “data” is plural for “datum.” When data are
processed, organized, structured or presented in a given context so as to make
them useful, they are called Information.
Information: It is the set of data that has been organized for direct utilization of
mankind, as information helps human beings in their decision making process.
Examples are: Time Table, Merit List, Report card, Headed tables, printed
documents, pay slips, receipts, reports etc.
Network Topology
Geometric representation of how the computers are connected to each other is
known as topology. There are five types of topology.
Mesh, Star, Bus, Ring and Hybrid

Interface of MS WORD
Menu bar:
A horizontal bar, typically located at the top of the screen below the title bar, containing
drop-down menus.
Status bar:
The status bar is the area at the bottom of the Word window that indicates information about
the current document.
Scroll bar:
A vertical or horizontal bar commonly located on the far right or bottom of a window that
allows you to move the window viewing area up, down, left, or right.
Working Area:
It is basically the main part of the page where you can type and enter the text.
Control button:
They are group of three buttons i.e. Minimize, Maximize, Restore and close button.

Tab Move to the next cell, to the right of the currently selected

Ctrl+A Select all contents of a worksheet.
Ctrl+B Bold all cells in the highlighted section.

Ctrl+D Fill down. Fills the cell beneath with the contents of the
selected cell. To fill more than one cell, select the source
cell and press Ctrl+Shift+Down arrow to select multiple
cells. Then press Ctrl+D to fill them with the contents of
the original cell.
Ctrl+F Search current sheet.
Ctrl+G Go to a certain area.
Ctrl+H Find and replace.
Ctrl+I Puts italics on all cells in the highlighted section.
Ctrl+K Inserts a hyperlink.
Ctrl+L Opens the Create Table dialog box.

Ctrl+Shift+{ Selects all cells directly or indirectly referenced by
Alt+Backspace Undo.
Alt+Enter While typing text in a cell, pressing Alt+Enter moves to
the next line, allowing for multiple lines of text in one cell.
Alt+= Creates a formula to sum all of the above cells.
Alt+' Allows formatting on a dialog box.
F1 Opens the help menu.
F2 Edits the selected cell.
F3 After a name is created, F3 pastes names.
F4 Repeats last action. For example, if you changed the color
of text in another cell, pressing F4 changes the text in cell
to the same color.
F5 Goes to a specific cell. For example, C6.
F6 Move to the next pane.
F7 Spell check selected text or document.
F8 Enters Extend Mode.
F9 Recalculates every workbook.
F10 Activates the menu bar.
F11 Creates a chart from selected data.
F12 Save As option.
Shift+F1 Opens the "What's This?" window.
Shift+F2 Allows the user to edit a cell comment.
Shift+F3 Opens the Excel formula window.
Shift+F5 Brings up a search box.
Shift+F6 Move to previous pane.
Shift+F8 Add to selection.
Shift+F9 Performs calculate function on active sheet.
Ctrl+F3 Open Excel Name Manager.
Ctrl+F4 Closes current window.

Ctrl+Up arrow Moves the cursor to the beginning of the line
or paragraph.
Ctrl+Down arrow Moves the cursor to the end of the paragraph.
Ctrl+Del Deletes word to the right of cursor.
Ctrl+Backspace Deletes word to the left of cursor.
