The Stages of Pairing

Alice Shillingsburg

Goal: The student will interact with the instructor low to zero instances of escape-related behaviour
for up to 5 minutes

Instructional Procedure: Block access to preferred materials. As the instructor, be the deliverer of
really fun items/activities. All preferred materials should be delivered by the instructor.

Teaching Steps:
1. Preferred items and activities offered continuously and non-contingently throughout the session.
Look for indicating responses.
Mastery Criteria: 3 sessions with low to no problem behaviour

2. Preferred items and activities offered continuously contingent upon the child’s proximity to the
instructor (arm’s length). Reinforce indicating responses.
Mastery Criteria: 3 sessions with low to no problem behaviour; 80% close proximity

3. Preferred items offered continuously contingent upon the child’s sitting at the table (optional)
Mastery Criteria: 3 sessions with low to no problem behaviour; 80% in seat

4. One demand per minute following indicating response.

5. One demand every 30 seconds following indicating response.

6. Two demands every 30 seconds following indicating response.

7. Two demands every 15 seconds following indicating response.

8. Three demands every 15 seconds following indicating response.

9. Baseline – on average, three demands every 15 seconds following indicating response.

Mastery Criteria (teaching steps 4-9): 3 sessions with low problem behaviour; 80% close proximity / in
seat (optional compliance)

Data Collection: Use a partial interval recording sheet to record the frequency of negative behaviour
(scream, cry, attempted escape, aggression, SIB, etc.)
